Book excerpt: The developing brains of our children need to "feel" safe. Children who carry chronic behavioral challenges are often met with reactive and punitive practices that can potentially reactivate the developing stress response systems. This book deeply addresses the need for co-regulatory and relational touch point practices, shifting student-focused behavior management protocols to adult regulated brain and body states which are brain aligned, preventive, and relational discipline protocols. This new lens for discipline benefits all students by reaching for sustainable behavioral changes through brain state awareness rather than compliance and obedience.

Book Structural Equivalence and Its Effects on Compliance

Download or read book Structural Equivalence and Its Effects on Compliance written by Meghan Aldershoff and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some states choose to follow through on their commitments to international human rights treaties while other states do not follow through? Structural equivalence is a social network measure which captures the similarity two actors have in their connections to other actors or to organizations. I use structural equivalence to help gain an understanding of what influences a state's decision to obey an international human rights treaty. I argue that as states become more tied to human rights treaty members through outside international institutions, economic trading, and alliances, the human rights treaty member states will be more likely to comply. Using a multinomial logit, I find that similar IGO membership has a questionable effect on compliance while similar alliance ties and heavy export dependence has a positive effect on compliance.

Book excerpt: Most human rights treaties have no mechanism of enforcement, which leaves one wondering why any states comply. I attempt to address a piece of this puzzle by examining whether greater dependence on co-signatories of a treaty increases a state's level of compliance to that treaty. Past literature has found that states that more highly value their relationships with other states are more likely to cooperate. I argue that a greater dependence on treaty co-signatories will increase the value a state places on its relationship with co-signatories. As a result, I expect greater dependence to increase compliance. To carry out my study I use a networks analysis-derived measure of dependence based on levels of trade, common IGO membership, and alliances. Examining two different human rights treaties, I use a Heckman selection model to test my hypothesis, modeling compliance as a function of dependence and other control variables. In support of my hypothesis, I find that states with greater levels of dependence on treaty co-signatories do tend to have higher levels of compliance. Such a finding has important policy implications, indicating that opening up trade, IGO, and/or alliance relations with non-complying states may, in fact, have the effect of improving their respect for human rights, thereby suggesting that perhaps sanctions are not the most effective route to curb human rights violations.
