Book excerpt: One of the jewels in the crown of Johann Sebastian Bach's sacred music is its use of astonishingly subtle and complex allegorical and representational devices. But when similar devices appear in the context of one of Bach's untexted, secular, instrumental collections such as the Six Solos (sonatas and partitas) for violin, the question arises whether he might be intending to embed discernible theological significances there as well, thus infusing the secular with the sacred. Such designs would be reasonably plausible within Bach's musical, cultural, and religious context. Shute carefully investigates the extent to which musical features of the Six Solos that seem to invite theological parallels might indeed have been intended to do so. Although the precise extent of Bach's intentions cannot be ascertained with certainty, the degree of correlation among strong potential signifiers would seem to suggest that they, and many other features of the Six Solos, are best explained as the product of extensive theological-allegorical designs on Bach's part, like those evident in his texted vocal music.

She was a leading light in Bach studies and lecturer at the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) Conservatory of Music and Drama. Posthumously edited by renowned Bach scholar Robin A. Leaver, Leahy's dissertation research forms the basis for this original study of the preludes to Bach's Leipzig chorales. Originally composed in Weimar and later revised in Leipzig, Bach's compositions have been a source of some puzzlement. As Leahy notes, "the original intentions of Bach and the possible purpose of this collection might be regarded as speculative." Working from available sources, however, she argues that through the careful examination of the links among the music, hymn texts, and theological sources some answers may be had. From Bach's personal and deep interest in Lutheran theology to his enormous musical passion, Leahy considers closely a series of critical questions: does the original manuscript for the chorales simply reflect a random gathering of compositions or is there a common theme in setting? How critical is the order of the chorales and what is the theological significance of that order? Were the chorales a unified collection, and if so, which parts were to be included and which not? Indeed, were the chorales themselves part of a possibly larger corpus? As Leahy makes evident, there are no simple answers, which is why she considers critical the relationship the texts of the hymns to the chorales and to one another, outlining a theological pattern that is vital to fully grasping the guiding philosophy of these compositions. The five-movement polyphonic Mass Ordinary emerged from the cultural and liturgical practices of medieval Roman Catholicism and became the pre-eminent large-scale musical genre of early modern Europe. By the end of the sixteenth century, the polyphonic mass remained a core musical genre among Catholics despite gaining widespread popularity within a new institution fundamentally opposed to the Catholic Church and best known for its cultivation of vernacular liturgical music: the Lutheran church. This book investigates the reception and performance history of the polyphonic mass in Lutheran Central Europe from ca. 1540-1600. Through careful source analysis, this study presents examples of polyphonic masses composed in both Lutheran and Catholic contexts that contradict the conventional conception of the Mass Ordinary as a fixed five-movement cycle with unaltered Latin texts. The book draws on sixteenth-century liturgical documents such as Lutheran church orders and hundreds of primary printed and manuscript sources of polyphonic masses; some of these items are well-known in Renaissance musicology source studies while others have received little to no scholarly attention. The book's findings invite reconsideration of how the Mass Ordinary genre is defined, allow for a discussion whether the polyphonic mass should be considered a bi-confessional genre, and present a cohesive examination of early modern liturgical music in the Germanic and western Slavic regions. It offers interesting reading to scholars and students of European Renaissance and religious music, as well as Reformation studies more generally.
