Book George III and Queen Charlotte

Download or read book George III and Queen Charlotte written by Jane Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'madness' of George III is the one fact about the King that everybody knows. Some might also say that George III 'lost' the American colonies. Few would be able to add that George III founded the Royal Academy of Arts, that he was a patron of Samuel Johnson and the astronomer William Herschel, and a king who 'gloried in the name of Briton'. Among his contemporaries George III was noted as an outstanding bibliophile and a renowned connoisseur of music, science, painting and architecture. . . . Published to coincide with the major exhibition at The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace, George III & Queen Charlotte: patronage, collecting and court taste reconsiders the role of George III, Queen Charlotte and their family in encouraging the arts within the court and in society as a whole during the 50 years of the King's reign. Illustrated by a superb range of works of art in the Royal Collection, the book reveals aspects of George III as father, monarch, and man of letters that have generally been overlooked, and demonstrates his true importance as one of the most wide-ranging, influential and far-sighted collectors of his day. It is an important contribution to studies of the fine and decorative arts in the Georgian period, and will be an essential source of referene for both academics and collectors. -- Book jacket.

Book The Mark of the Scots

Download or read book The Mark of the Scots written by Duncan A. Bruce and published by Citadel Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the first-ever celebration of all things - and all people - of Scottish descent. Today there are almost 28 million people of Scottish ancestry in the world, over 12 million of whom reside in the United States, about 4 million in Canada, and 5 million in Scotland. Scottish accomplishments throughout history in every field of endeavor - from science to the arts to politics and exploration - rival those of even the largest ethnic groups: Scots have been significant in most of the major inventions of the past three centuries, including the steam engine, the telegraph, the telephone, radio, television, the computer, the transistor, and the motion picture; People as diverse as Sir Isaac Newton, Charles de Gaulle, Katherine Hepburn, Winston Churchill, Elizabeth Taylor, Immanuel Kant, Sir Laurence Olivier, Elvis Presley, Edvard Grieg, John D. Rockefeller, and Ty Cobb could claim Scottish ancestry; and Warsaw, Madrid, La Paz, and Stockholm have all had mayors of Scottish descent. The Mark of the Scots contains thousands of facts and is fully annotated. It is a comprehensive and readable book that deserves a place on the shelf of every genealogist, Scottish-American, and history buff.

Book William Hunter and his Eighteenth Century Cultural Worlds

Download or read book William Hunter and his Eighteenth Century Cultural Worlds written by Helen McCormack and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eminent physician and anatomist Dr William Hunter (1718-1783) made an important and significant contribution to the history of collecting and the promotion of the fine arts in Britain in the eighteenth century. Born at the family home in East Calderwood, he matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1731 and was greatly influenced by some of the most important philosophers of the Scottish Enlightenment, including Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746). He quickly abandoned his studies in theology for Medicine and, in 1740, left Scotland for London where he steadily acquired a reputation as an energetic and astute practitioner; he combined his working life as an anatomist successfully with a wide range of interests in natural history, including mineralogy, conchology, botany and ornithology; and in antiquities, books, medals and artefacts; in the fine arts, he worked with artists and dealers and came to own a number of beautiful oil paintings and volumes of extremely fine prints. He built an impressive school of anatomy and a museum which housed these substantial and important collections. William Hunter’s life and work is the subject of this book, a cultural-anthropological account of his influence and legacy as an anatomist, physician, collector, teacher and demonstrator. Combining Hunter’s lectures to students of anatomy with his teaching at the St Martin’s Lane Academy, his patronage of artists, such as Robert Edge Pine, George Stubbs and Johan Zoffany, and his associations with artists at the Royal Academy of Arts, the book positions Hunter at the very centre of artistic, scientific and cultural life in London during the period, presenting a sustained and critical account of the relationship between anatomy and artists over the course of the long eighteenth century.
