Book Talking Machine West

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many associate early western music with the likes of Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, but America’s first western music craze predates these “singing cowboys” by decades. Written by Tin Pan Alley songsters in the era before radio, the first popular cowboy and Indian songs circulated as piano sheet music and as cylinder and disc recordings played on wind-up talking machines. The colorful fantasies of western life depicted in these songs capitalized on popular fascination with the West stoked by Buffalo Bill’s Wild West shows, Owen Wister’s novel The Virginian, and Edwin S. Porter’s film The Great Train Robbery. The talking machine music industry, centered in New York City, used state-of-the-art recording and printing technology to produce and advertise songs about the American West. Talking Machine West brings together for the first time the variety of cowboy, cowgirl, and Indian music recorded and sold for mass consumption between 1902 and 1918. In the book’s introductory chapters, Michael A. Amundson explains how this music reflected the nostalgic passing of the Indian and the frontier while incorporating modern ragtime music and the racial attitudes of Jim Crow America. Hardly Old West ditties, the songs gave voice to changing ideas about Indians and assimilation, cowboys, the frontier, the rise of the New Woman, and ethnic and racial equality. In the book’s second part, a chronological catalogue of fifty-four western recordings provides the full lyrics and history of each song and reproduces in full color the cover art of extant period sheet music. Each entry also describes the song’s composer(s), lyricist(s), and sheet music illustrator and directs readers to online digitized recordings of each song. Gorgeously illustrated throughout, this book is as entertaining as it is informative, offering the first comprehensive account of popular western recorded music in its earliest form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When fourteen-year-old Pauly Craig takes a swim in the Clark Fork River one summer day, he doesn’t expect to see a boy drown. Surrounded by everyday violence in his Montana town, Pauly is determined to prove himself, navigating the awkward fumbles of boyhood against a backdrop of strikes, gang fights, trainhopping, bootlegging, and the casualties of war. The setting of The Bitter Roots, Missoula, Montana will be familiar with anyone who knows Norman Maclean's classic, A River Runs Through It. First published in 1941 and never before reissued, The Bitter Roots is a largely autobiographical novel full of evocative details of a time and place, the work of a writer coming to terms with his past. Its characters include numerous fictional counterparts of people Macleod knew, including Norman Maclean's brother Paul. It’s a frank, unvarnished portrait of America from its entry into World War One to the start of Prohibition. Norman Macleod shows us a country struggling with racism, class prejudice, conflicts between labor and capital, and sexual stereotypes. A vivid coming-of-age story, The Bitter Roots reminds us that finding and holding on to your identity is one of the greatest battles there is.

Book excerpt: Time and tide sometimes clash into chaos, sometimes swell together into a moonlit sea of tranquility, and sometimes, very rare times, time and tide meet at the perfect angle of chaos and calm. This was such a time. And on such a tide, in the young of the year when the earth was still fresh and green, a small clump of seaweed washed ashore. A little karjill found a pearl inside that became his destiny and his journey. The dark waves reached for him, almost like the lips of a lover promising him peace, comfort, the end of his motion. He drifted into them. The light dimmed. The blackness grew. The folds of repulsive flesh coiled around him. He had failed. The waves crashed against the sacred walls. They lashed against the dome, tore into Flat Rock which shuddered, then split and was sucked into the sea. All natural laws broke as the waves refused to be held in by the land. Mountains were ripped out by their roots and the wind drilled holes into the sea floor. He was hurtling into a chaos of dark and glistening beauty, a bursting clash of light and sound .
