This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All’s Well that Ends Well was written circa 1604 and was the first of a series of plays that Shakespeare wrote mixing humor and pathos. The play may have been a comment on a situation that was being debated in Parliament at the time – that the King could control the property of a nobleman who inherited his title before he turned twenty-one. The plot of the play revolves around Helen, the orphaned daughter of a doctor, who has helped cure the King of France. He had promised her if she could cure him, she could have any man she wanted as her husband. Helen asks him if she could marry Bertram, the Count of Rossillion, whom she is in love with. The Count is considerably above her in station, and the King agrees to the marriage, but with great reluctance. Bertram is unhappy about the whole situation, and soon after the wedding, he leaves for war in Italy, the marriage unconsummated. He is accompanied by, Parolles, who is a bit of an opportunist although Bertram thinks he is a true friend. He later betrays Bertram. This annotated edition includes a biography and critical essay.

This invaluable new study guide to one of Shakespeare's greatest plays contains a selection of the finest criticism through the centuries, plus an introduction by Harold Bloom, an accessible summary of the plot, a comprehensive list of characters, a biography of Shakespeare, and more.

Download or read book Speech and Performance in Shakespeare s Sonnets and Plays written by David Schalkwyk and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Schalkwyk offers a sustained reading of Shakespeare's sonnets in relation to his plays. He argues that the language of the sonnets is primarily performative rather than descriptive, and bases this distinction on the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein and J. L. Austin. In a wide-ranging analysis of both the 1609 Quarto of Shakespeare's sonnets and the Petrarchan discourses in a selection of plays, Schalkwyk addresses such issues as embodiment and silencing, interiority and theatricality, inequalities of power, status, gender and desire, both in the published poems and on the stage and in the context of the early modern period. In a provocative discussion of the question of proper names and naming events in the sonnets and plays, the book seeks to reopen the question of the autobiographical nature of Shakespeare's sonnets.
