Book excerpt: He has lost everything - his name, his titles, and his lands. Don Felipe is an Inca prince, exiled to a village in the Andes. He has seen his people crushed under to the Spanish conquerors’ yoke and killed by the sicknesses they carried. As his own time is running out, he writes a letter to the king of Spain, a plea for justice before it is too late. The letter grows to more than a thousand illustrated pages, to contain all of the old man’s knowledge about his vanishing world, including a history of his people. After he completes his chronicle, Felipe and his grandson journey across mountains and through deep jungles to deliver it in Lima, “The City of Kings.&rd Ib Michael’s novel The Pope of the Indies, translated by Ingrid G. Lansford, tells of a stubborn dreamer convinced to the last that justice is possible in this world. The prize-winning fictionalized biography is based on the Inca Chronicle, an illustrated manuscript in Spanish with a sprinkling of Quechua dating from 1615, now in the Danish Royal Library and considered its greatest treasure.

Book Play on Words

Download or read book Play on Words written by H. Bundy Shaw and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-02-08 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ALL NET PROCEEDS FROM THE SALE OF THIS BOOK ARE DONATED TO THE NATIONAL MS SOCIETY. Check out Bundy singing one of his songs to his Granddaughter at her Bat Mitzvah http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_CQCy7f1Xw PLAY ON WORDS is another term for pun. Pun is the humorous use of a word or phrase so as to emphasize or suggest its diff erent meanings or applications. Play can mean a dramatic composition or piece; a performance, as on the stage; exercise or activity for amusement or recreation; fun or jest, as opposed to seriousness (Dictionary.com). This book is full of humor, puns, and lots of fun. H. Bundy Shaw loved words. He loved the diff erent uses, the different meanings, and the different pronunciations of words. Bundy also loved to play the piano, sing, and make people smile. Most of all, he loved his family, friends, and extended family. This book is a sixty-year history of Bundys writing, beginning with poems he wrote during World War II, through his career with Playtex, his retirement in southern Florida until his death in 2002. He wrote lyrics for skits at the Playtex Annual Meeting, which included Trouble in Midriff City about the new Long Line Living Bra. He wrote lyrics and poems for anniversaries, weddings, birthdays, and bar and bat mitzvahs. Encompassed in them was a complete biography of the person or people he was honoring. He also wrote a musical, Our Fair Couple, which is a spoof of My Fair Lady. Bundy never earned any money from his lyrics and writing, so all the profits from the sale of this book will be donated to the National MS Society in his memory. It is my hope that these writings will bring enjoyment to you.

Book The Great Weaver From Kashmir

Download or read book The Great Weaver From Kashmir written by Halldor Laxness and published by Archipelago. This book was released on 2009-07-10 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Nobel Prize winner Halldór Laxness “Laxness brought the Icelandic novel out from the ‘sagas' shadow…to read Laxness is also to understand why he haunts Iceland—he writes the unearthly prose of a poet cased in the perfection of a shell of plot, wit, and clarity.” — The Guardian “Finally, finally, an imposing work of fiction, which rises like a cliff from the flatness of Icelandic poetry and fiction of recent years!” —Kristján Albertsson, Vaka 1927 The Great Weaver from Kashmir is Laxness’ first major novel, the book that propelled Icelandic literature into the modern world. Shortly after World War One, Steinn Elliði, a young philosopher-poet dandy, leaves the physical and cultural confines of Iceland’s shores for mainland Europe, seeking to become “the most perfect man on earth.” His journey leads us through a wide range of moral, philosophical, religious, political, and social realms, from hedonism to socialism to aestheticism to Benedictine monasticism. Upon his return to Iceland, Steinn finds himself more conflicted than before, torn between love of the beauty and traditions of his homeland, longing and regret for his great adolescent love, Diljá, and his newfound monastic ideal, forcing him to make choices with fateful consequences. Published when Laxness was only twenty-five years old, The Great Weaver from Kashmir’s radical experimentation caused a stir in Iceland, which would soon reverberate throughout Europe. The Great Weaver is much more than a first major work by a literary master—it is a groundbreaking modernist classic.

Occasionally there has been peace and even mutual understanding, but usually these relations have been ones of tension, often involving recrimination and even violence. This volume addresses a number of the major questions that have been at the heart and the periphery of these tenuous relations through the years. The volume begins with a number of papers discussing relations as Christianity emerged from and defined itself in terms of Judaism. Other papers trace the relations through the intervening years. And a number of papers confront issues that have been at the heart of the troubled twentieth century. In all, these papers address a sensitive yet vital set of issues from a variety of approaches and perspectives, becoming in their own way a part of the ongoing dialogue.
