Book excerpt: Named "One of the Top Ten Books for Parish Clergy" for the year 2006 by the Academy of Parish Clergy! Gentle Shepherding offers a rare balance in an introduction to pastoral ethics, one that identifies deeply with the pastoral vocation and brings it into conversation with a developed body of ethical theory. The goal of the book is to equip seminarians and pastors with conceptual resources for clarifying moral responsibility in the practice of ministry. This responsibility includes three levels: the minister as a moral agent in offering care; the minister as a moral enabler in encouraging virtue in others; and the minister as a moral leader in facilitating congregational life and witness in society. Helping ministers and seminarians to think anew about their responsibilities and the moral quandaries in pastoral practice, Gentle Shepherding integrates theory with practice, providing case material for further reflection and discussion and at least one case study or exercise associated with each chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians of all traditions have often puzzled with the question “Do dogs go to heaven?” Drawing on Catholic teaching, and on his long pastoral experience as a parish priest, Terry Martin expands that concept to consider wider issues around all animals, domesticated and free-living, and why they are here. Within a context of Christian faith, he seeks to understand the place of animals in God’s complex creation and the relationship that human beings have (for good or ill) with those animals. More than that, he looks at the big questions which so many ask about who, under God, animals are and what meaning, if any, animal lives have from a Catholic Christian perspective.

Book A Walk Through the Psalms

Download or read book A Walk Through the Psalms written by Lt-Colonel Norman H Voisey and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-26 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book You might say that the Psalms stand in the center of all scripture. For they speak of experiences, the very center of life itself. The Psalms beckon us to a rock-solid faith which will provide us the victories over life’s troubles, even if we foist them upon ourselves. There are many of us who return to them repeatedly to hold fast to that which we have attained. Gordon D Fee and Douglas D Stuart categorized the Psalms for us in this way: Laments–we all go through tough times and we learn from these Psalms that we are not alone in our struggles, and that God is able to help and strengthen us. Thanksgiving Psalms, Hymns of Praise, and Salvation History Psalms have elements of praise which elevates our understanding of God’s faithfulness, protection, and benefit. Eight Wisdom Psalms and ten Psalms of Trust promise the reader of the goodness and care of God and provide us with the vision of a victorious life. Ultimately, the Psalms are intentional, their vital purpose is to forge a connection between the worshiper and God, whether in a cathedral or prayer cell. For generation after generation, mankind has sung and prayed the Psalms. About the Author Lt-Colonel Norman H Voisey completed 40 years of service in The Salvation Army where he was a Trustee, having served also in that capacity for three of their hospitals. His application to reserve Section 8 funding for Senior Housing in Cincinnati was secured for their Booth Residence. Voisey was educated in Canada but in the United States, he continued studies at The Salvation Army Training College, Pace University, and Case Western Reserve University. Voisey is an avid reader of Judaic thought, a student of spiritual and literary greats, Abraham Joshua Heschel, Harold Bloom, Cynthia Ozick, and Elie Wiesel. He leans heavily toward nonfiction, but classic novels continue to nurture his experience. He loves poetry, sports, genealogy, music and the arts. As a member of the New York Staff Band for 16 years, and as the leader of youth music and Christian interpretive dance groups, Voisey has brought ministry to the United Kingdom, Europe, the Far East, Estonia and Russia. Voisey is close to confirming his Huguenot Ancestry and the story that his forbears were driven from Voisey, France to John Calvin’s Geneva, and eventually to Devonshire and finally to Windsor, Ontario, his birthplace.

Book Psalms

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Luther Mays
  • Publisher : Westminster John Knox Press
  • Release : 2011-01-01
  • ISBN : 0664234399
  • Pages : 477 pages

Download or read book Psalms written by James Luther Mays and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psalms have a double identity. They are scripture and liturgy. They compose a book of the Bible and are found in our hymnals and books of worship and prayer. When we think of them in historical perspective, another identity emerges. They are the liturgical poetry of ancient Israel, texts with a history of composition and use before they became scripture. A commentary in this Interpretation series needs to keep all three identities in view. That puts some strain on the commentator's task. The attempt to interpret the Psalms in awareness of the depth in their identity explains some things about the commentary and its writing. - Preface.
