Book All Charged Up

Download or read book All Charged Up written by Don Brown and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2024-01-09 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning author-illustrator Don Brown explores the history of electricity in this installment of the Big Ideas That Changed the World series. In 600 BCE, the Greek mathematician Thales observed a seemingly strange phenomenon: amber, when rubbed with a cloth, had the ability to attract lightweight objects like feathers, straw, and leaves. He had unknowingly discovered an electric charge. His experiments wouldn’t be picked back up until about 2,000 years later, when another curious mind, inspired by the Greek word for amber (elektron), declared the rubbed object to have an invisible power: electricity. From phones to light bulbs to electric cars, electricity is something we can’t live without today. Narrated by Jagadish Chandra Bose, a Bengali pioneer in radio technology from the previous century, All Charged Up! is the fascinating story of both tireless experimentation and accidental discovery, of inspiring human progress and dramatic scientific rivalries. Full of facts and colorful historical figures, this nonfiction graphic novel highlights key inventors and breakthroughs, through the earliest discoveries to the Age of Electricity to today, including: Musschenbroek’s Leyden jar, which proved that electricity could be stored; founding father Benjamin Franklin’s famous experiment using a kite as a lightning rod (don’t try this at home!); a fierce competition between two Italian scientists that resulted in the first battery (and inspired Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein); and Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison’s War of the Currents; uses of wind and solar energy, and many more. Breaking down concepts like atoms, current, electromagnetism in a kid-friendly, accessible way, acclaimed author-illustrator Don Brown demonstrates how our world became plugged in and connected by electricity. Big Ideas That Changed the World is a graphic novel series that celebrates the hard-won succession of ideas that ultimately changed the world. Humor, drama, and art unite to tell the story of events, discoveries, and ingenuity over time that led humans to come up with a big idea and then make it come true.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Adler states that "The supreme law of life is this: The sense of worth shall not be allowed to be diminished." His view supports a central theme in Boss Canvasman. The setting involves the O'Donnell family and ex-circus workers during the 1930s, a time of the Great Depression and Prohibition in the United States. Devlin O'Donnell strives for a sense of well-being only to experience painful shame through the bizarre behavior of his brother, Egan. As Devlin seeks the love of Eileen Coleman, he fears Egan's mannerisms will convince Eileen that Devlin is also mentally unbalanced. Throughout the narrative, he struggles to deny this interpretation. Egan's closeness to his mother, Maura, adds mystery to the novel. Determined to uncover its meaning, Devlin engages in a search that brings him to a secret Egan shares with Maura. At a pivotal point in the tale, the mystery unfolds, and Devlin explodes in drastic action. The ex-circus people provide further structure to the narrative. Jerry Burke is a former boss canvasman, the person responsible for erection of the main tent. Sean Sweeny who had unloaded flatcars befriends Devlin. Sean's ambiguous references to the boss canvasman puzzle Devlin, adding intrigue to the story. Injured in a circus accident, Sean longs for a return to the circus, a life maintaining his self-esteem. Sean's use of Irish lore and circus language bind the novel together metaphorically. His desire for recognition creates disturbing consequences for himself and Devlin.

  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book From Away written by David Carkeet and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2010-03-04 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “If Alfred Hitchcock could remake Fargo, it might feel something like Carkeet’s comic-absurd latest” (Publishers Weekly). Denny Braintree, a wisecracking loner devoted to model trains, has found himself stranded in Vermont. His night at the hotel begins promisingly—until his prospective one-night stand walks out on him. As he prepares to leave town, someone mistakes Denny for Homer Dumpling—a local man who mysteriously disappeared three years earlier, and who apparently looks a whole lot like Denny. Instead of correcting the mistake, Denny slips into his new identity as easily as a winter fleece. And it’s a good thing too, because the woman he’d hoped to sleep with has turned up dead, and the chief suspect is the out-of-towner who was pursuing her at the hotel . . . As Denny tries to unravel the mystery, he struggles to hide his true identity from Homer’s increasingly suspicious circle of family and friends, including Homer’s prickly girlfriend. The adventures of this fast-talking bumbler as his survival instincts are put to the test make for a rollicking novel by an author who has produced “some of the funniest writing since Mark Twain” (Jonathan Kellerman, New York Times–bestselling author of Night Moves). “A deftly funny book.” —Carl Hiaasen
