Book Things Not Generally Known

Download or read book Things Not Generally Known written by David Ames Wells and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-03-18 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Things Not Generally Known: A Popular Hand-Book of Facts Not Readily Accessible in Literature, History, and Science Tm present volume is based upon a work bearing the same general title, published in Inndon during the past year by Mr. John Timbs, the well-known author and compiler of several pop ular works. The rapid sale of more than twelve thousand copies of that book is suficient evidence at once of its value and its pep ularity. The examination, however, of Mr. Timbs' book, prepar story to its republication here, showed that the original plan, though well 'executed, was susceptible of much improvement, not only by the correction of some errors and the omission of many articles of little value or of mere local interest, but also by the introduction of much additic information. A revision of the whole was therefore undertaken, during the intervals of leisure ob tained from engrossing business pursuits, and the result has been the production of an mentially new book. At least half of the articles in the original work have been entirely omitted or altered by abridgment and addition, while so much new matter has been added as to render the present volume much larger than the English one: Some of these additions have been derived from Popular Errors, an older book by Mr. Timbs, and from Cu riosities of History, a similar work very recently issued by the same industrious compiler. But a far larger number are the pro ducts of a somewhat extended and varied course of reading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: A page-turning novel that is also an exploration of the great philosophical concepts of Western thought, Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World has fired the imagination of readers all over the world, with more than twenty million copies in print. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.

Book The Wonder Book of Knowledge

Download or read book The Wonder Book of Knowledge written by Henry Chase Hill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wonder Book of Knowledge: The Marvels of Modern Industry and Invention, the Interesting Stories of Common Things, the Mysterious Processes of Nature Simply Explained Although not intended primarily as a child's book, the interest-compelling pic tures and clear, illuminating answers to the constant avalanche of questions sug gested by the growing mind, unite in making far happier children in the home and brighter children at school. Parents and teachers will also recognize the opportunity to watch for subjects by which the child's interest appears to be more than ordinarily attracted, and, in so doing, will be enabled to guide the newly-formed tendencies into the proper channels. With the greatest thinkers of the age advocating vocational training, and leading educators everywhere pointing out that the foundation of a practical education for life must be laid in the home, thoughtful parents will not overlook the fact that a book which both entertains and instructs is of supreme importance in the equipment of their children. In the preparation of this book its function has been considered as that of gather ing up some of the multitudinous bits of information of interest, both to the inquiring child and the older reader, and putting them in shape to be digested by the ordinary searcher after knowledge. The book is intended, not for a few technical specialists, but for the larger number of men, women and children who are not interested in exhaustive treatises, but who are seeking to gain some fair idea about the numberless every-day subjects that arise in ordinary conversation, or that they meet with in reading and about which they desire some definite and satisfactory information. Most of us realize that we live in a world of wonders and we recognize progress in industries with which we come in personal contact, but the daily routine of our lives is ordinarily so restricted by circumstances that many of us fail to follow works which do not come within our own experience or see beyond the horizon of our own specific paths. The workman who tends the vulcanizer in the rubber factory has come to take his work as a matter of course; the man who assembles a watch, or a camera, is not apt to appreciate the fact that there have been marvelous developments in his line of manufacturing; the operator of a shoe machine, or of an elevator, does not see anything startling or absorbing in the work - and so we find it almost throughout the entire list of industries. Man was in ancient days of grosser mould, And Hercules might blush to learn how far Beyond the limits he had vainly set The dullest sea-boat soon shall wing her way. Men shall descry another hemisphere, Since to one common centre all things tend; SO earth, by curious mystery divine, Well balanced hangs amid the starry Spheres. Book The Young Folks Cyclop dia of Common Things Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Young Folks Cyclop dia of Common Things Classic Reprint written by John D. Champlin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Folks' Cyclopaedia of Common Things The Young Folks' Cyclopaedia of Common Things has been prepared to fill a vacancy, the existence of which the writer believes no unprejudiced person will deny. Intelligent parents and teachers need not be told that one of the most important habits which can be cultivated in a child is that of consulting works of reference. There are dictionaries and atlases for the use of young folks, but unfortunately all the popular cyclopaedias are written in language which a child cannot understand, and no attempt has been mad; it is believed, previous to the publication of this work, to bring cyclopaedic knowledge within the range of a child's intellect Yet questions are almost continually arising in the studies, and in the daily experience of youth, which such a cyclopaedia would answer without trouble to parents or teachers - to say nothing of numerous questions put by children, which many adults would find a difficulty in answering satisfactorily without reference to books. In the present work the writer has attempted to furnish in simple language, aided by pictorial illustrations where thought necessary, a knowledge of things in Nature, Science, and the Arts which are apt to awaken a child's curiosity. Such features of Astronomy, Chemistry, Physics, Natural History, and Physiology as can easily be made intelligible are explained, special attention being given to the natural objects which most immediately affect human happiness - such as the phenomena of air, light, heat, and electricity, and those parts of the human system whose health is influenced by our habits. Book Ten Thousand Wonderful Things

Download or read book Ten Thousand Wonderful Things written by Edmund Fillingham King and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Thousand Wonderful Things: Comprising Whatever Is Marvellous and Rare, Curious, Eccentric, and Extraordinary, in All Ages and Nations Everything that is marvellous. Carries with it much that is instructive, and, in this sense, Ten Thousand Wonderful Things, may be made useful for the highest educational purposes. Events which happen in the regular course have no claim to a place in any work that professes to be a regis ter of What is uncommon; and were we to select such 'vonders only as are capable of familiar demonstration, we should destroy their right to be deemed wondrous, and, at the same time, defeat the very object which we profess to have in view. Amarvel once explained away ceases to be a marvel. For this reason, while rejecting everything that is obviously fictitious and untrue, we have not hesitated to insert many incidents which appear at first sight to be wholly incredible. Book Mysteries of Time and Space Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mysteries of Time and Space Classic Reprint written by Richard Anthony Proctor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-02 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mysteries of Time and Space The essays in the present, volume are for the most part among those in which I have endeavoured to present the tendency of science in our time to show the domain of law as to all intents and purposes infinite. The mysteries of time and space here dealt with were no mysteries to those men of old times who supposed that at a short distance from this earth lies the region which they regarded as the heaven of heavens, and that a short. Distance in time from the present takes us to the beginning of all things in the past, to the end of all things in the future. Starting with such conceptions - the positivism of early thought - men found more and more of mystery as they learned more and more of actual facts, until now that which of old was confidently explained is found to be utterly inexplicable, save as a part - an infinitely minute part - of the mysterious Infinity and Eternity we call The Universe.
