Waste Not, Want Not 節約用水從自己做起 -Owain Mckimm 6/18 The enormous fires that burned through Australia last year and this year have scientists very concerned. They worry that when the rains fall, they will wash the ash left by the fires into the rivers and pollute Australia’s water supply, a situation that would leave thousands of Australians without drinking water. This looming water crisis in Australia has also called attention to Taiwan’s own dangers of water shortage. Although Taiwan has an average rainfall of 2,500 millimeters per year, its lack of storage capacity means that much of that rainfall flows into the ocean. In fact, the nation’s reservoirs can only store about six weeks’ worth of water before running completely dry. As a result, Taiwan faced water shortages nine times between 2002 and 2015. An additional element that perpetuates this problem is the low cost of water in Taiwan—one of the lowest in the world. Inexpensive water bills mean people hardly think about saving water. And although a rise in water prices could reduce Taiwan’s water usage significantly, no politician is brave enough to suggest that solution. To reduce the risk of a severe water crisis in the future, it’s therefore up to us to cut back on the amount of water we use. 6/19 To figure out what actions are needed to conserve water, it helps to know where water is being wasted. In an average household, flushing the toilet and showering account for an overwhelming percentage of all water used. It stands to reason, then, that the most significant change you can make is to your bathroom habits. Everyone loves a long hot shower, but do try to limit your shower time to around five minutes. To help you stick to this rule, find a five-minute-long song that you can play while showering, and make sure you’re finished when it ends! Limiting your shower time is pointless if you’re allowing the shower water to drain away while it warms up. To solve this, collect that initial stream of cold water in a container. You can then use that water to flush your toilet. Besides trying to minimize the number of times you flush, check your toilet for leaks. After all, leakages are the biggest waste of water. You may think these small actions won’t make much of a difference, but there are over 23 million people in Taiwan. If everyone takes steps to waste less water, the nation’s water security is all but assured. News Report 看新聞學英語 Huge Locust Outbreak Hits East Africa, Heads Beyond 蝗災肆虐東非威脅南亞 People 人物側寫 Florence Pugh: Hollywood’s Confident Newcomer 佛蘿倫絲. Denim Jeans: From Worker Safety to Fashion Staple CNN News Who Are BTS? How to Protect Your Smart Home from Hackers Camino de Santiago—The Walk of a Lifetime 西班牙朝聖之路——千載難逢的健行體驗 Writing 寫作練習 Translation Practice 翻譯寫作 Reading Skill 閱讀策略 The Black Poodle 〈黑色貴賓犬〉 Environment 環境保育 Waste Not, Want Not 節約用水從自己做起 Plus Talk 會話百分百 Expressing Opinions 表達意見 1. Book excerpt: An insightful and evidence-based assessment of our urgent need to enact labor law reform—and how to achieve it. Millions of non-union workers want unionization, but our current labor-management relations law conspires to deny them meaningful opportunities to secure collective workplace representation. The resulting low rates of collective bargaining impose economic, political, and social costs on us all. In Fulfilling the Pledge, Roger Hartley addresses the plight of American workers, who face a grim, uncertain future, as the digital workplace reshapes the hierarchical post–World War II industrial relations system that once gave workers a voice. Through empirical evidence and the lens of law and policy, Hartley examines what industrial sociologists call the chronic “representation gap” and clarifies how a wide-ranging movement could build a vocal constituency for the congressional enactment of labor law reform. The pledge made in the 1935 National Labor Relations Act to encourage establishment of industrial democracy—where workers possess a voice in their places of work—remains unfulfilled. Speaking to policymakers, scholars, historians, and the average citizen, Fulfilling the Pledge makes a compelling case for collective workplace representation that serves the greater good, even as American labor relations law continues to undermine collective bargaining by workers and becomes an increasingly significant political and social issue.

Book Planetary Health Humanities and Pandemics

Download or read book Planetary Health Humanities and Pandemics written by Heike Härting and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the variable meanings and discourses of historical and contemporary pandemics to rethink theories and practices of planetary health. Rather than conflating the planetary with anthropogenic climate change, planetary geo-engineering, or the "global," the volume elaborates a version of planetary health humanities that invites decolonial, creative, and pluridisciplinary modes of thinking and sees "health" as a complex non-anthropocentric process that moves within the multiple scales of the planetary. The volume offers new historical trajectories as it considers an eighteenth-century woman author’s readings of plague, intersecting narratives of nineteenth-century lactation and vaccination, and the forgotten biopolitics of NASA’s Planetary Quarantine Program. It offers accounts of decolonial and oracular planetary health, insists that the role of literature in the health humanities is not merely instrumental, explores viral and planetary co-inhabitations, and scrutinizes inequities faced by global health workers. The volume also includes discussions of cybernetic addiction and the complex entanglements of humans, microbes, and bees. Its concluding interview addresses the concrete impact of current planetary transformations on individual and collective health. Bringing together multiple disciplines, the volume will be of interest to students and scholars in health humanities, literary studies, postcolonial studies, medical history, and narrative medicine.

Book Rule of Law

  • Pages : 293 pages

Download or read book Rule of Law written by Barbara Faedda and published by Ronzani Editore. This book was released on 2021-08-25 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by Barbara Faedda Based on a division of powers and the supremacy of a constitution, the rule of law is not invulnerable, as was demonstrated in the violent attack against the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. It can be used but also abused; it can be respected or exploited, exalted or undermined. It can even arouse skepticism, because it is not always effective against the realities of political life. In a world facing social division, polarization, poverty, climate change, and pandemics, it is crucial to understand the roles of those who manage, control, or are touched by the rule of law. This book’s primary goal is to showcase the variety of perspectives, cases, and methodologies of the people and institutions that bring a range of expertise to bear in many fields. The essays here – which encompass various geographic areas and social groups, as well as several historical periods – address racism, misinformation, human rights, the status of women, the treatment of indigenous peoples, the environment, and more. The rule of law is not merely a set of principles that guarantee a just society. It must be more than a tool in the hands of legal experts; it cannot be a concept out of the reach of ordinary people. It is essential that every citizen feel a clear responsibility to protect and promote the rule of law, to denounce inequalities and oppose imbalances of power, if the common goal is to enjoy freedom, democracy, and justice for all. Barbara Faedda is the executive director of the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies at Columbia University and adjunct associate professor in Columbia’s Department of Italian, where she teaches courses on contemporary Italy. Among her publications are the books Elite. Cultura italiana e statunitense tra Settecento e Novecento (Ronzani, 2020); From Da Ponte to the Casa Italiana: A Brief History of Italian Studies at Columbia (Columbia University Press, 2017); Present and Future Memory: Holocaust Studies at the Italian Academy, editor (Italian Academy Publications, 2016); and essays including “An Italian Perspective on the U.S.-Italy Relationship” (The White House Historical Association, 2016); “Neurolaw: come le neuroscienze potrebbero cambiare l’antropologia giuridica”; and “We are not racists, but we do not want immigrants.” In 2016 Dr. Faedda conceived the International Observatory for Cultural Heritage (IOCH), dedicated to all issues relating to the survival, protection, and conservation of cultural heritage. In 2019 she was appointed ambassador, permanent observer for the European Public Law Organization to the United Nations.

Download or read book Digitalisation for Sustainable Infrastructure The Road Ahead written by Carlo Secchi and published by Ledizioni. This book was released on 2022-11-24 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's tumultuous and fast-changing times, digitalisation and technology are game changers in a wide range of sectors and have a tremendous impact on infrastructure. Roads, railways, electricity grids, aviation, and maritime transport are deeply affected by the digital and technological transition, with gains in terms of competitiveness, cost-reduction, and safety. Digitalisation is also a key tool for fostering global commitment towards sustainability, but the race for digital infrastructure is also a geopolitical one. As the world's largest economies are starting to adopt competitive strategies, a level playing field appears far from being agreed upon. Why are digitalisation and technology the core domains of global geopolitical competition? How are they changing the way infrastructure is built, operated, and maintained? To what extent will road, rail, air, and maritime transport change by virtue of digitalisation, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things? How to enhance cyber protection for critical infrastructure? What are the EU's, US' and China's digital strategies?
