Book excerpt: Passion, romance, drama, humor, and tragedy intertwine in this compulsively readable Hamlet retelling, from the perspective of a strong-willed, modern-day Ophelia. Meet Ophelia, high school senior, daughter of the Danish king's most trusted adviser, and longtime girlfriend of Prince Hamlet of Denmark. She lives a glamorous life and has a royal social circle, and her beautiful face is splashed across magazines and television screens. But it comes with a price--her life is ruled not only by Hamlet's fame and his overbearing royal family but also by the paparazzi who hound them wherever they go. After the sudden and suspicious death of his father, the king, the devastatingly handsome Hamlet spirals dangerously toward madness, and Ophelia finds herself torn, with no one to turn to. All Ophelia wants is to live a normal life. But when you date a prince, you have to play your part. Ophelia rides out this crazy roller coaster life, and lives to tell her story in live television interviews.

Book Alien Species and Evolution

Download or read book Alien Species and Evolution written by George W. Cox and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Alien Species and Evolution, biologist George W. Cox reviews and synthesizes emerging information on the evolutionary changes that occur in plants, animals, and microbial organisms when they colonize new geographical areas, and on the evolutionary responses of the native species with which alien species interact. The book is broad in scope, exploring information across a wide variety of taxonomic groups, trophic levels, and geographic areas. It examines theoretical topics related to rapid evolutionary change and supports the emerging concept that species introduced to new physical and biotic environments are particularly prone to rapid evolution. The author draws on examples from all parts of the world and all major ecosystem types, and the variety of examples used gives considerable insight into the patterns of evolution that are likely to result from the massive introduction of species to new geographic regions that is currently occurring around the globe. Alien Species and Evolution is the only state-of-the-art review and synthesis available of this critically important topic, and is an essential work for anyone concerned with the new science of invasion biology or the threats posed by invasive species.

Book excerpt: Peter reads the messages originally addressed by God to sojourners in the Old Testament as the same messages God had for the sojourning believers of Peter’s generation. No wonder Peter used these same exhortations to instruct first-century believers in the diaspora. For Peter, the Old Testament was their Scripture. For us today, the Old Testament and New Testament are our Scripture. God’s messages for the faithful sojourners in the Old Testament and New Testament are the same message he has for sojourners of all generations, including ours.

Book excerpt: “There was a new maturity in her dark eyes, a confidence that wavered only briefly. An urge to dismantle it—dismantle her—rose within me. Could she tell?” Sharing your body with a controlling alien who invades your mind in fervent lucid dreams is no walk in the park. When Kak first entered my life, I fought tooth and nail to resist his influence. Yet over time we bonded in perfect harmony: two souls in one body, synced and molded to each other’s needs and desires. But our peace is shattered by the return of Kuthil Ash Kharn, the alien who implanted a shard of himself inside me all those years ago... The shard that became Kak. Is it even him? Or has a decade back on his Home world turned him into someone... something... else? There’s a new darkness inside Kuthil Ash Kharn that’s impossible to ignore. It both alarms and allures me, beckoning me to the edge of an unknowable abyss. My first instinct is to run the other way and continue my idyllic life with Kak, but I can’t. Not yet. Because people are dying, and the aliens seem to be involved. Now I’ve got one last job to do, and I need Kuthil Ash Kharn’s help to do it. Will Kak and I survive this? Or will Kuthil Ash Kharn’s haunting allure fracture what took us a decade to build? Aliens’ Vice: A Sci-Fi Sharing Romance is a full-length steamy alien romance novel that leans dark.

The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves -- Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love. Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, The Host is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

Book Alien Species and Insect Conservation

Download or read book Alien Species and Insect Conservation written by Tim R. New and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-09 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This overview of the roles of alien species in insect conservation brings together information, evidence and examples from many parts of the world to illustrate their impacts (often severe, but in many cases poorly understood and unpredictable) as one of the primary drivers of species declines, ecological changes and biotic homogenisation. Both accidental and deliberate movements of species are involved, with alien invasive plants and insects the major groups of concern for their influences on native insects and their environments. Risk assessments, stimulated largely through fears of non-target impacts of classical biological control agents introduced for pest management, have provided valuable lessons for wider conservation biology. They emphasise the needs for effective biosecurity, risk avoidance and minimisation, and evaluation and management of alien invasive species as both major components of many insect species conservation programmes and harbingers of change in invaded communities. The spread of highly adaptable ecological generalist invasive species, which are commonly difficult to detect or monitor, can be linked to declines and losses of numerous localised ecologically specialised insects and disruptions to intricate ecological interactions and functions, and create novel interactions with far-reaching consequences for the receiving environments. Understanding invasion processes and predicting impacts of alien species on susceptible native insects is an important theme in practical insect conservation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twilight Zone is remembered as a science fiction television series that reflected the uneasiness of Cold War America. Its creator, Rod Serling, was a secular Jew who fought in World War II and returned stateside to see moral problems at home, like racism and the potential for technology to rob us of our humanity. The Twilight Zone was Serling’s attempt to influence mainstream culture in an ethically positive direction. His moral compass, which shaped his writing on the series, is entangled with his brand of cultural Judaism. By examining a range of episodes, the authors of this volume bring this Jewish moral influence out from the twilight and into the full light of day.
