Book Labour Migration to the Middle East

Download or read book Labour Migration to the Middle East written by F. Eelens and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1992 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the recent Gulf War, the extent of the migrant worker phenomenon in the Middle East was highlighted by the plight of tens of thousands of Asian and North African men and women fleeing from Kuwait and Iraq. The harrowing images and reports spreading across the world from the hastily constructed refugee camps demonstrated the vulnerability of the economic and social position of this floating labour force, whose living conditions are the subject of this wide-ranging study. The authors of Labour Migration to the Middle East have mainly based their work on labour migrants from Sri Lanka, which shows a number of interesting characteristics when compared to other labour-exporting countries. No less than 1.3% of the Sri Lankan population work in the Middle East, of which 70% are women working mainly in the domestic sector. Solid sociological and anthropological research is the basis for a detailed examination of various social, economic and demographic aspects of the processes of labour migration from Sri Lanka to the Gulf States. The book opens with an introduction to the topic of labour migration, and presents the concept of survival migration, which is considered a main characteristic of the Sri Lankan case. The work goes on to describe the recruiting process and the level of fees which migrants have to pay for a job abroad; the policy of the Gulf States with regard to labour migration; the socio-economic conditions of the Sri Lankan migrant workers; the socio-economic position and religious status of Sri Lankan Muslim women migrating to the Gulf; the impact of labour migration on Sri Lankan society--specifically on social stratification, social mobility, household structure, marriage stability and the well-being of children--and conditions which lead to the early return of migrants. Labour Migration to the Middle East makes an important contribution to the scientific and social reflection on the global phenomenon of labour migration.

This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the social protection of lower-skilled migrants from Sri Lanka. The book explores social protection programmes for low-skilled immigrants from three perspectives: legal aspects, national policies, and programmes. The chapter on legal background for protecting migrant workers focuses on declarations and on labour laws on the national and international level. Policies and programmes identify national level labour policies and other related policies that apply to migrant workers, as well as available social protection programmes for Sri Lankan migrant workers. In turn, the solutions for minimizing the related risks faced by Sri Lankan migrant workers. Highlighting the economic contribution of migrant workers and their vulnerability at all stages of migration, this book offers a timely and important contribution for policy makers and practitioners as well as scholars of migration studies, public policy and related fields.

Kamala a mother of four children facing poverty to manage her family with a drunken worthless husband that sleeps all day getting drunk on moonshine and coconut arrack, he spends all her hard earn money, Kamala works in a local factory paid a low salary and not enough to solve her financial problems. She thinks migrating to a foreign land would be the only hope. The only qualification she has to migrate to a foreign country is to be a housemaid. That salary would be way better than in Sri Lanka, flying to Saudi Arabia as a housemaid would be a dream come true. Yet day after day, Kamala comprehends her mistake and regrets her stupid actions of leaving her beloveds. She is trapped by the secured walls of the Arabian house and by the rules, regulations and her negligence on working. She gets punished by horrific physical and mental abuse by the hands of her employer. Finally trapped her in a room as a punishment with nonpayment of her salary. When she tries to escape she is being physically tortured by the employer with nailing her body feet beating her with chains and sticks. Finally, when she escapes and returns to her motherland, everything what she worked have gone on a waste by her husband and leaving it all for nothing. Why should you read this book? When you Google Sri Lanka all you see is a beautiful island with diverse landscapes that range from plains to highlands, rainforests to lovely sandy beaches, all filled with wildlife and exotic foods. But few know how the Sri Lankan lower middle class suffer. How every day is a challenge for them to make ends meet. How much they suffer to keep their families alive, with insufficient money to feed their children and pay for their education. This why so many Sri Lankan women leave home to become migrant workers to support their families. Meanwhile, corrupt politicians make their fake promises to get elected, then ignore the people who elected them and just want to make money for themselves. They won't protect Sri Lankan migrant workers. Nor will the governments in the Middle East. This shows us how cruel the world is. It is another side of life which many have not seen or ever thought about. A nightmare. Why can't governments take any action about this? Non-government organizations? Anyone at all? When migrant female workers send their hard earn money home with high hopes, husbands usually waste it on alcohol and gambling. Children go astray and get abused. These women and families go from the frying pan into the fire. Time, money, pain all get wasted. Everything ends in tears. This story will give you the inner aspect of the middle-class migrant workers and their lives, how hard they work, how much they sacrifice, how hard they hide their feelings and pain, suffer and struggle to survive every day. It is also a story of the courage and strength a woman may summon to endure and rise above it all. I hope you enjoy this book.
