Book Alice in Japanese Wonderlands

  • Author : Amanda Kennell
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 2023-07-31
  • ISBN : 0824896874
  • Pages : 249 pages

Download or read book Alice in Japanese Wonderlands written by Amanda Kennell and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first translations of Lewis Carroll's Alice books appeared in Japan in 1899, Alice has found her way into nearly every facet of Japanese life and popular culture. The books have been translated into Japanese more than 500 times, resulting in more editions of these works in Japanese than any other language except English. Generations of Japanese children learned English from textbooks containing Alice excerpts. Japan's internationally famous fashion vogue, Lolita, merges Alice with French Rococo style. In Japan Alice is everywhere--in manga, literature, fine art, live-action film and television shows, anime, video games, clothing, restaurants, and household goods consumed by people of all ages and genders. In Alice in Japanese Wonderlands, Amanda Kennell traverses the breadth of Alice's Japanese media environment, starting in 1899 and continuing through 60s psychedelia and 70s intellectual fads to the present, showing how a set of nineteenth-century British children's books became a vital element in Japanese popular culture. Using Japan's myriad adaptations to investigate how this modern media landscape developed, Kennell reveals how Alice connects different fields of cultural production and builds cohesion out of otherwise disparate media, artists, and consumers. The first sustained examination of Japanese Alice adaptations, her work probes the meaning of Alice in Wonderland as it was adapted by a cast of characters that includes the "father of the Japanese short story," Ryūnosuke Akutagawa; the renowned pop artist Yayoi Kusama; and the best-selling manga collective CLAMP. While some may deride adaptive activities as mere copying, the form Alice takes in Japan today clearly reflects domestic considerations and creativity, not the desire to imitate. By engaging with studies of adaptation, literature, film, media, and popular culture, Kennell uses Japan's proliferation of Alices to explore both Alice and the Japanese media environment.

Book Quantum Reality

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jim Baggott
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2020
  • ISBN : 0198830157
  • Pages : 313 pages

Download or read book Quantum Reality written by Jim Baggott and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum mechanics is an extraordinarily successful scientific theory. It is also completely mad. Although the theory quite obviously works, it leaves us chasing ghosts and phantoms; particles that are waves and waves that are particles; cats that are at once both alive and dead; and lots of seemingly spooky goings-on. But if we're prepared to be a little more specific about what we mean when we talk about 'reality' and a little more circumspect in the way we think a scientific theory might represent such a reality, then all the mystery goes away. This shows that the choice we face is actually a philosophical one. Here, Jim Baggott provides a quick but comprehensive introduction to quantum mechanics for the general reader, and explains what makes this theory so very different from the rest. He also explores the processes involved in developing scientific theories and explains how these lead to different philosophical positions, essential if we are to understand the nature of the great debate between Niels Bohr and Albert Einstein. Moving forwards, Baggott then provides a comprehensive guide to attempts to determine what the theory actually means, from the Copenhagen interpretation to many worlds and the multiverse. Richard Feynman once declared that 'nobody understands quantum mechanics'. This book will tell you why.

Book Quantum Mechanics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Biao Wu
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2023-03-26
  • ISBN : 9811976260
  • Pages : 197 pages

Download or read book Quantum Mechanics written by Biao Wu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-26 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook highlights a concise introduction to quantum mechanics in a readable and serious manner. Being readable, the book intends to present the beauty and magic of quantum mechanics to the mass public. Being serious, the book uses mathematics to describe the most profound results in quantum mechanics. To balance the two, the book assumes that the readers are familiar with high-school mathematics and instructs the least possible advanced mathematics necessary for the understanding of quantum mechanics. The book first covers the history of quantum mechanics and then introduces the magical quantum world, including quantum states living in Hilbert space, indistinguishable particles, linear superposition, Heisenberg's uncertainty relations, quantum entanglement, Bell's inequality, quantum energy levels, Schrödinger’s cat and many-worlds theory, etc. To compare with classic physics, the book also covers the classic mechanics before introducing quantum mechanics. At last, the book briefly covers quantum computing and quantum communications. Besides readers of other majors, the book is also a good reference for students in physics. It helps physics students to develop a solid understanding of the basics of quantum mechanics, preventing them from getting lost in solving the Schrödinger equation. The book also discusses quantum entanglement and quantum information which traditional quantum mechanics textbooks do not cover. The Foreword is written by Frank Wilczek, Nobel Laureate in physics, 2004. This book is a translation of an original Chinese edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

Book House of Wits

Download or read book House of Wits written by Paul Fisher and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 904 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An American odyssey that reveals the fascinating complexities of one of history's most brilliant, eccentric, and daring families The James family, one of America's most memorable dynasties, gave the world three famous children: a novelist of genius (Henry), an influential philosopher (William), and an invalid (Alice) who became a feminist icon, despite her sheltered life and struggles with mental illness. Although much has been written on them, many truths about the Jameses have long been camouflaged. The conflicts that defined one of American's greatest families— homosexuality, depression, alcoholism, female oppression—can only now be thoroughly investigated and discussed with candor and understanding. Paul Fisher's grand family saga, House of Wits, rediscovers a family traumatized by the restrictive standards of their times but reaching out for new ideas and ways to live. He follows the five James offspring ("hotel children," Henry called them) and their parents through their privileged travels across the Atlantic; interludes in Newport and Cambridge; the younger boys' engagement in the Civil War; and William and Henry's later adventures in London, Paris, and Italy. He captures the splendor of their era and all the members of the clan—beginning with their mercurial father, who nurtured, inspired, and damaged them, setting the stage for lives of colorful passions, intense rivalries, and extraordinary achievements. House of Wits is a revealing cultural history that revises and completes our understanding of its remarkable protagonists and the changing world where they came of age.
