Book Land Squandering and Social Crisis in the Spanish City

Download or read book Land Squandering and Social Crisis in the Spanish City written by Jesús Manuel González Pérez and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-06-20 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last two decades have been marked by intense and accelerated economic, political, and cultural processes that have affected urban spaces. These changes have occurred in different parts of cities (traditional centers, edges, peripheries) and at different levels of the urban system (large and medium-sized cities and in their respective areas of influence). Possibly the clearest expression of the spatial effects on cities can be perceived in their morphological transformations, their territorial dimensions, or in their social problems. Until 2008, urban–territorial processes were a reflection of the logic and inconsistencies of an expansive economic context and of a structural context that favored the development of cities through concurrent processes and actors. As a result, the built land and amount of urbanized and built surfaces increased, together with processes of the expansion and modernization of cities. Since 2008, the expansive economic cycle has ended, and there have been diverse negative consequences. Notably, the construction sector has come to an abrupt halt. Access to credit has also been reduced, and unemployment has increased. The economic recession has caused sociodemographic and socioeconomic issues exemplified by housing vulnerability, with dispossession, evictions, a shortage of social housing, and energy poverty.

Book Ecology of Mediterranean Evergreen Oak Forests

Download or read book Ecology of Mediterranean Evergreen Oak Forests written by Ferran Roda and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Used by humans since ancient times, evergreen oak forests still cover extensive mountain areas of the Mediterranean Basin. These broadleaved evergreen forests occupy a transitional zone between the cool-temperate deciduous forest biome and the drier Mediterranean pine forests and shrublands. Slow growing and casting a deep shade, the sclerophyllous holm oak (Quercus ilex) absolutely dominates the closed canopy of many Mediterranean evergreen oak forests. This is a synthesis of 20 years of research on the structure, function, and dynamics of holm oak forests in two intensively studied experimental areas in Spain. By combining observational measurements at the leaf, tree, plot, and catchment scales with field experiments and modelling, the authors explore how these forests cope with strong water limitation and repeated disturbances.

This book was released on 2024-07-10 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pregnancy is a complex state with many endocrine and metabolic challenges to a woman's physiology. Inappropriate maternal endocrine and metabolic changes such as obesity, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and hypothyroidism, may lead to short-term and long-term complications in the mother and offspring. This not only affects population health, but also imposes a huge social and economic burden, accompanied by significant direct and indirect public health costs. Therefore, the study of endocrine and metabolic effects on maternal-fetal and neonatal outcomes is an especially important research field. These studies will lead to new approaches to predicting metabolic diseases in pregnancy and provide new solutions and effective interventions to prevent or delay those related diseases. Furthermore, they will reveal unknown pathophysiological mechanisms of inappropriate maternal endocrine and metabolic changes during pregnancy and their implications on short-term and long-term complications in the mother and offspring. This could lead to updated diagnosis and treatment strategies for women with endocrine and metabolic diseases during pregnancy. The proposed Research Topic intends to evaluate the pathophysiological mechanisms of inappropriate maternal endocrine and metabolic changes during pregnancy and their implications on short-term and long-term complications in the mother and offspring. The evolving trends in prediction, diagnosis, prevention and treatment strategies of endocrine and metabolic diseases during pregnancy are also encouraged. In addition, the goal of this research topic is to uncover the characteristics of maternal endocrine and metabolic changes in special populations, like twins, women with obesity, gestational diabetes mellitus, pregnancy hypothyroidism, etc
