Download or read book Algebraic Curves and Riemann Surfaces written by Rick Miranda and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Miranda takes the approach that algebraic curves are best encountered for the first time over the complex numbers, where the reader's classical intuition about surfaces, integration, and other concepts can be brought into play. Therefore, many examples of algebraic curves are presented in the first chapters. In this way, the book begins as a primer on Riemann surfaces, with complex charts and meromorphic functions taking centre stage. But the main examples come fromprojective curves, and slowly but surely the text moves toward the algebraic category. Proofs of the Riemann-Roch and Serre Dualtiy Theorems are presented in an algebraic manner, via an adaptation of the adelic proof, expressed completely in terms of solving a Mittag-Leffler problem. Sheaves andcohomology are introduced as a unifying device in the later chapters, so that their utility and naturalness are immediately obvious. Requiring a background of one term of complex variable theory and a year of abstract algebra, this is an excellent graduate textbook for a second-term course in complex variables or a year-long course in algebraic geometry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: book and to the publisher NOORDHOFF who made possible the appearance of the second edition and enabled the author to introduce the above-mentioned modifi cations and additions. Moscow M. A. NAIMARK August 1963 FOREWORD TO THE SECOND SOVIET EDITION In this second edition the initial text has been worked over again and improved, certain portions have been completely rewritten; in particular, Chapter VIII has been rewritten in a more accessible form. The changes and extensions made by the author in the Japanese, German, first and second (= first revised) American, and also in the Romanian (lithographed) editions, were hereby taken into account. Appendices II and III, which are necessary for understanding Chapter VIII, have been included for the convenience of the reader. The book discusses many new theoretical results which have been developing in tensively during the decade after the publication of the first edition. Of course, lim itations on the volume of the book obliged the author to make a tough selection and in many cases to limit himself to simply a formulation of the new results or to pointing out the literature. The author was also compelled to make a choice of the exceptionally extensive collection of new works in extending the literature list. Monographs and survey articles on special topics of the theory which have been published during the past decade have been included in this list and in the litera ture pointed out in the individual chapters.

Download or read book Geometry of Higher Dimensional Algebraic Varieties written by Thomas Peternell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-03-20 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on lecture notes of a seminar of the Deutsche Mathematiker Vereinigung held by the authors at Oberwolfach from April 2 to 8, 1995. It gives an introduction to the classification theory and geometry of higher dimensional complex-algebraic varieties, focusing on the tremendeous developments of the sub ject in the last 20 years. The work is in two parts, with each one preceeded by an introduction describing its contents in detail. Here, it will suffice to simply ex plain how the subject matter has been divided. Cum grano salis one might say that Part 1 (Miyaoka) is more concerned with the algebraic methods and Part 2 (Peternell) with the more analytic aspects though they have unavoidable overlaps because there is no clearcut distinction between the two methods. Specifically, Part 1 treats the deformation theory, existence and geometry of rational curves via characteristic p, while Part 2 is principally concerned with vanishing theorems and their geometric applications. Part I Geometry of Rational Curves on Varieties Yoichi Miyaoka RIMS Kyoto University 606-01 Kyoto Japan Introduction: Why Rational Curves? This note is based on a series of lectures given at the Mathematisches Forschungsin stitut at Oberwolfach, Germany, as a part of the DMV seminar "Mori Theory". The construction of minimal models was discussed by T.

Download or read book Rational Points on Varieties written by Bjorn Poonen and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is motivated by the problem of determining the set of rational points on a variety, but its true goal is to equip readers with a broad range of tools essential for current research in algebraic geometry and number theory. The book is unconventional in that it provides concise accounts of many topics instead of a comprehensive account of just one—this is intentionally designed to bring readers up to speed rapidly. Among the topics included are Brauer groups, faithfully flat descent, algebraic groups, torsors, étale and fppf cohomology, the Weil conjectures, and the Brauer-Manin and descent obstructions. A final chapter applies all these to study the arithmetic of surfaces. The down-to-earth explanations and the over 100 exercises make the book suitable for use as a graduate-level textbook, but even experts will appreciate having a single source covering many aspects of geometry over an unrestricted ground field and containing some material that cannot be found elsewhere.

This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a sequel to Lectures on Complex Analytic Varieties: The Local Paranwtrization Theorem (Mathematical Notes 10, 1970). Its unifying theme is the study of local properties of finite analytic mappings between complex analytic varieties; these mappings are those in several dimensions that most closely resemble general complex analytic mappings in one complex dimension. The purpose of this volume is rather to clarify some algebraic aspects of the local study of complex analytic varieties than merely to examine finite analytic mappings for their own sake. Originally published in 1970. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
Download or read book Analytic and Algebraic Geometry written by Jeffery D. McNeal and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Analytic and algebraic geometers often study the same geometric structures but bring different methods to bear on them. While this dual approach has been spectacularly successful at solving problems, the language differences between algebra and analysis also represent a difficulty for students and researchers in geometry, particularly complex geometry. The PCMI program was designed to partially address this language gulf, by presenting some of the active developments in algebraic and analytic geometry in a form suitable for students on the 'other side' of the analysis-algebra language divide. One focal point of the summer school was multiplier ideals, a subject of wide current interest in both subjects. The present volume is based on a series of lectures at the PCMI summer school on analytic and algebraic geometry. The series is designed to give a high-level introduction to the advanced techniques behind some recent developments in algebraic and analytic geometry. The lectures contain many illustrative examples, detailed computations, and new perspectives on the topics presented, in order to enhance access of this material to non-specialists."--Publisher's description.

Download or read book Modern Methods in Operator Theory and Harmonic Analysis written by Alexey Karapetyants and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume gathers selected, peer-reviewed papers from the "Modern Methods, Problems and Applications of Operator Theory and Harmonic Analysis VIII" (OTHA 2018) conference, which was held in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, in April 2018. The book covers a diverse range of topics in advanced mathematics, including harmonic analysis, functional analysis, operator theory, function theory, differential equations and fractional analysis – all fields that have been intensively developed in recent decades. Direct and inverse problems arising in mathematical physics are studied and new methods for solving them are presented. Complex multiparameter objects that require the involvement of operators with variable parameters and functional spaces, with fractional and even variable exponents, make these approaches all the more relevant. Given its scope, the book will especially benefit researchers with an interest in new trends in harmonic analysis and operator theory, though it will also appeal to graduate students seeking new and intriguing topics for further investigation.
