Download or read book Algebraic Topology New Trends in Localization and Periodicity written by Carles Broto and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central to this collection of papers are new developments in the general theory of localization of spaces. This field has undergone tremendous change of late and is yielding new insight into the mysteries of classical homotopy theory. The present volume comprises the refereed articles submitted at the Conference on Algebraic Topology held in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Spain, in June 1994. Several comprehensive articles on general localization clarify the basic tools and give a report on the state of the art in the subject matter. The text is therefore accessible not only to the professional mathematician but also to the advanced student.
Download or read book Breadth in Contemporary Topology written by David T. Gay and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the 2017 Georgia International Topology Conference, held from May 22–June 2, 2017, at the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia. The papers contained in this volume cover topics ranging from symplectic topology to classical knot theory to topology of 3- and 4-dimensional manifolds to geometric group theory. Several papers focus on open problems, while other papers present new and insightful proofs of classical results. Taken as a whole, this volume captures the spirit of the conference, both in terms of public lectures and informal conversations, and presents a sampling of some of the great new ideas generated in topology over the preceding eight years.

Download or read book Representation Theory and Complex Geometry written by Neil Chriss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-24 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book is largely self-contained...There is a nice introduction to symplectic geometry and a charming exposition of equivariant K-theory. Both are enlivened by examples related to groups...An attractive feature is the attempt to convey some informal ‘wisdom’ rather than only the precise definitions. As a number of results [are] due to the authors, one finds some of the original excitement. This is the only available introduction to geometric representation theory...it has already proved successful in introducing a new generation to the subject." (Bulletin of the AMS)
Download or read book Surveys on Surgery Theory AM 149 Volume 2 written by Sylvain Cappell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-08 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surgery theory, the basis for the classification theory of manifolds, is now about forty years old. The sixtieth birthday (on December 14, 1996) of C.T.C. Wall, a leading member of the subject's founding generation, led the editors of this volume to reflect on the extraordinary accomplishments of surgery theory as well as its current enormously varied interactions with algebra, analysis, and geometry. Workers in many of these areas have often lamented the lack of a single source surveying surgery theory and its applications. Because no one person could write such a survey, the editors asked a variety of experts to report on the areas of current interest. This is the second of two volumes resulting from that collective effort. It will be useful to topologists, to other interested researchers, and to advanced students. The topics covered include current applications of surgery, Wall's finiteness obstruction, algebraic surgery, automorphisms and embeddings of manifolds, surgery theoretic methods for the study of group actions and stratified spaces, metrics of positive scalar curvature, and surgery in dimension four. In addition to the editors, the contributors are S. Ferry, M. Weiss, B. Williams, T. Goodwillie, J. Klein, S. Weinberger, B. Hughes, S. Stolz, R. Kirby, L. Taylor, and F. Quinn.

Download or read book Monoidal Category Theory written by Noson S. Yanofsky and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-11-05 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, cutting-edge, and highly readable textbook that makes category theory and monoidal category theory accessible to students across the sciences. Category theory is a powerful framework that began in mathematics but has since expanded to encompass several areas of computing and science, with broad applications in many fields. In this comprehensive text, Noson Yanofsky makes category theory accessible to those without a background in advanced mathematics. Monoidal Category Theorydemonstrates the expansive uses of categories, and in particular monoidal categories, throughout the sciences. The textbook starts from the basics of category theory and progresses to cutting edge research. Each idea is defined in simple terms and then brought alive by many real-world examples before progressing to theorems and uncomplicated proofs. Richly guided exercises ground readers in concrete computation and application. The result is a highly readable and engaging textbook that will open the world of category theory to many. Makes category theory accessible to non-math majors Uses easy-to-understand language and emphasizes diagrams over equations Incremental, iterative approach eases students into advanced concepts A series of embedded mini-courses cover such popular topics as quantum computing, categorical logic, self-referential paradoxes, databases and scheduling, and knot theory Extensive exercises and examples demonstrate the broad range of applications of categorical structures Modular structure allows instructors to fit text to the needs of different courses Instructor resources include slides
Download or read book Variations on a Theme of Borel written by Shmuel Weinberger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-08 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the middle of the last century, after hearing a talk of Mostow on one of his rigidity theorems, Borel conjectured in a letter to Serre a purely topological version of rigidity for aspherical manifolds (i.e. manifolds with contractible universal covers). The Borel conjecture is now one of the central problems of topology with many implications for manifolds that need not be aspherical. Since then, the theory of rigidity has vastly expanded in both precision and scope. This book rethinks the implications of accepting his heuristic as a source of ideas. Doing so leads to many variants of the original conjecture - some true, some false, and some that remain conjectural. The author explores this collection of ideas, following them where they lead whether into rigidity theory in its differential geometric and representation theoretic forms, or geometric group theory, metric geometry, global analysis, algebraic geometry, K-theory, or controlled topology.
Download or read book Equivariant Surgery Theories and Their Periodicity Properties written by Karl H. Dovermann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of surgery on manifolds has been generalized to categories of manifolds with group actions in several different ways. This book discusses some basic properties that such theories have in common. Special emphasis is placed on analogs of the fourfold periodicity theorems in ordinary surgery and the roles of standard general position hypotheses on the strata of manifolds with group actions. The contents of the book presuppose some familiarity with the basic ideas of surgery theory and transformation groups, but no previous knowledge of equivariant surgery is assumed. The book is designed to serve either as an introduction to equivariant surgery theory for advanced graduate students and researchers in related areas, or as an account of the authors' previously unpublished work on periodicity for specialists in surgery theory or transformation groups.
