Download or read book Psychotropic Agents written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The description of the pharmacology of psychotomimetics, cannabis, and alcohol in this third volume concludes the discussion on psychotropic agents. As psychomotor stimulants these groups of psychotropic agents are of little or no therapeutic relevance, but since they are used in a nonmedical manner, or are even considered by some groups of the population as social commodities, their behavioral effects and psychopharmacological properties are not the concern of the pharmacol ogist alone. The same is true of psychotomimetics, as well as cannabis and its components. Psychotomimetics have a social history going back many hundreds of years and are among the most potent psychotropic agents known to man. The closing description of psychopharmacology also deals with the psychotropic effects of a number of drugs not primarily considered to be psychotropic. Their psychotropic effects are either an inherent constituent of their therapeutic profile, as is the case with opiates, hypnotics, and caffeine, or they may occur indirectly as side effects or accompanying effects during therapy. This applies to p-adrenoreceptor antagonists and anticholinergics. The editors are also aware that a description of psychotropic agents would not have been complete without discussing the medical, ethical, and legal aspects of the development, clinical testing, and use of such drugs.

Book Alcohol and Speech

Download or read book Alcohol and Speech written by Steven B. Chin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Alcohol and Speech" serves as a single, unifying reference source for those interested in speech motor effects evident in the acoustic record, reaction times, speech communication strategies, and perceptual judgments. Written by a linguist and a psychologist, the book provides an analytic orientation toward speech and alcohol with an emphasis on laboratory-based research in acoustic-phonetics and speech science. It is a comprehensive review of the effects of alcohol on speech and compares the various theoretical concerns which form this research. Studies of both alcohol and speech have been rare because each field has its own experimental protocols, methodologies, and research agendas. This book fills a long-standing gap and is unique in providing both breadth of coverage and depth of analysis. A case study involving the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound develops some of the legal implications of this research. It illustrates a unified perspective for the study of alcohol and speech. It contains the benefit of years of research on alcohol and speech. It provides a wealth of research to investigators in a wide variety of disciplines: medicine, psychology, speech, forensics, law, and human factors. It demonstrates how alcohol and speech research applies in a practical situation: the Exxon Valdez grounding. It includes a glossary as well as numerous tables and graphs for a quick overview of data and results.

Book Biological Effects of Alcohol

Download or read book Biological Effects of Alcohol written by Henri Begleiter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disease of alcoholism has long been a major health problem which affects significant proportions of the populations of various countries. It is now apparent that legal and moral sanctions have not provided a sufficient impetus to arrest this rampant problem. Therefore, it is evident that the approach to this international health problem must rely on the development of efficacious prevention and treatment techniques. If the treatment and prevention of alcoholism is to be based on the rational assessment of the disease, it is imperative that we understand the complex determinants of this disease. The elements that initiate and perpetuate this addictive process must be examined and elucidated. Because this disease appears to involve biological, psychological and sociological factors, the need for multidisciplinary research is of the utmost importance. Indeed it is imperative that research findings obtained in one area or discipline be made available to researchers in other disciplines. A better understanding of the factors which contribute to alcohol-related problems can be achieved by studying the agent that is essential for the expression of the disease process. This can be accomplished by examining the acute or chronic effects of that agent upon a number of biochemical, physiological or behavioral systems. This international conference was organized to enhance communication among investigators from different disciplines working on different aspects of alcohol-related problems and alcoholism. The proceedings of this international symposium represent the most recent findings in these areas of research. The topics range from biophysical processes to complex cognitive processes. It is hoped that findings from each discipline can challenge and stimulate the others. Many papers in this publication present new data and novel contributions to the alcoholism literature. Indeed the high qualities of the papers are tributes to the dedication and high scientific standards manifested by the outstanding participants. I wish to express my gratitude to the individuals who chaired the various sessions. These scientists played a most critical role in the selection of participants and in the conduct of the symposium. These international symposia have been going on since 1972 and have always been part of the meetings sponsored by the International Council of Alcoholism and Addictions.
