Download or read book Delphi Complete Works of Alciphron Illustrated written by Alciphron and published by Delphi Classics. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alciphron was a second century AD writer of highly literary and stylistic letters, owing much to the New Comedy of Menander, while providing a fascinating window into the social life of Athens after the reign of Alexander. The letters represent some of the most important and appealing compositions of the Second Sophistic period. They comprise a wide variety of circumstances, detailing the colourful lives of parasites, courtesans, fishermen and farmers; the theme of erotic love is never far. Alciphron’s inventive imagination and compelling realism have won him a place of distinction in the early development of romantic prose. Download or read book Berkeley written by Daniel E. Flage and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish philosopher George Bishop Berkeley was one of the greatest philosophers of the early modern period. Along with David Hume and John Locke he is considered one of the fathers of British Empiricism. Berkeley is a clear, concise, and sympathetic introduction to George Berkeley’s philosophy, and a thorough review of his most important texts. Daniel E. Flage explores his works on vision, metaphysics, morality, and economics in an attempt to develop a philosophically plausible interpretation of Berkeley’s oeuvre as whole. Many scholars blur the rejection of material substance (immaterialism) with the claim that only minds and things dependent upon minds exist (idealism). However Flage shows how, by distinguishing idealism from immaterialism and arguing that Berkeley’s account of what there is (metaphysics) is dependent upon what is known (epistemology), a careful and plausible philosophy emerges. The author sets out the implications of this valuable insight for Berkeley’s moral and economic works, showing how they are a natural outgrowth of his metaphysics, casting new light on the appreciation of these and other lesser-known areas of Berkeley’s thought. Daniel E. Flage’s Berkeley presents the student and general reader with a clear and eminently readable introduction to Berkeley’s works which also challenges standard interpretations of Berkeley’s philosophy.

Book That There May Be Equality

Download or read book That There May Be Equality written by L.L. Welborn and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of growing inequality in the twenty-first century, That There May Be Equality seeks to give new audibility to Paul’s appeal to the principle of “equality” in the collection for the poor. L.L. Welborn traces the history of the concept of “equality” in Greek history in order to convey the potency of the idea which Paul invokes. He analyzes the structural inequality of the Roman economy, particularly that of Roman Corinth, and traces the emergence of Paul’s concern about inequality in the ekklēsia of Christ believers at Corinth. Welborn then analyzes Paul’s invocation of the principle of “equality” in his appeal for partnership in the collection for the poor in 2 Corinthians 8 and 9, bringing Paul’s appeal to “equality” into the present-day crisis of global inequality.
