Born in Frenchtown, New Jersey, Lewis used his training as a commercial artist for an advertising company to promote the AMORC in its early days through print ads and pamphlets. Lewis believed it was his mission to spread modern mysticism throughout the United States, which he did by promoting AMORC tours, appearing on radio shows, giving demonstrations, writing books, and inventing mystical devices. His inventions include the Luxatone, the Cosmic Ray Coincidence Counter, and the Sympathetic Vibration Harp.

The current open cycle in America of AMORC was re-activated by Harvey Spencer Lewis in 1915. Il évoque également la situation confuse des hauts grades en France à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, la naissance et la propagation du Rite de Perfection à la même époque aux Antilles et en Amérique, puis la création du REAA en trente-trois degrés et la naissance du premier Suprême Conseil à Charleston en 1802. L'ensemble se réfère, dans la mesure du possible, à l'esprit des rituels du XVIIIe siècle, et tente de gommer les interprétations parfois contestées des XIXe et XXe siècles. Il s'adresse donc aux pratiquants du Rite quelle que soit leur Juridiction. Il faut toutefois avouer, comme dans le cas du volume consacré aux degrés de Perfection, que la tâche a été grandement facilitée par le retour aux sources effectué à la fin du XXe siècle par le Suprême Conseil de France.
