Book excerpt: Rediscover the drawings of Albrecht Dürer, one of the most prominent Renaissance artists, known as an incomparable painter and draughtsman with a keen eye for the natural world. During his lifetime, Dürer found tremendous success as a painter and printmaker, taking commissions from prominent figures such as Frederick the Wise and Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. His drawings and studies reveal his interest in human proportions, anatomy, and perspective. Featured in this book are Dürer's drawings from the Albertina Museum's preeminent collection including family portraits, studies of animals and plants, and studies of the human body. This book showcases more than 100 of Dürer's drawings including Hare, Self Portrait at the Age of 13, and Melencolia I, along with paintings and prints. Featuring scholarly essays and beautifully reproduced works, this book shows the reader not only how important Dürer's drawings are to his own oeuvre, but also how he helped drawing become an appreciated medium in its own right.

Download or read book Reframing Albrecht D rer written by Andrea Bubenik and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the ways his art and persona were valued and criticized by writers, collectors, and artists subsequent to his death, this book examines the reception of the works of Albrecht D?rer. Andrea Bubenik's analysis highlights the intensive and international interest in D?rer's art and personality, and his developing role as a paragon in art historiography, in conjunction with the proliferation of portraits after his likeness. The author traces carefully how D?rer's paintings, prints, drawings and theoretical writings traveled widely, and were appropriated into new contexts and charged with different meanings. Drawing on inventories and correspondences and taking collecting practices into account, Bubenik establishes who owned what by D?rer in the 16th and 17th centuries, and characterizes the key locations where interest in D?rer peaked (especially the courts of Maximilian I in Munich, and Rudolf II in Prague). Bubenik treats the emergent artistic appropriations of D?rer-borrowings from or transformations of his originals-in conjunction with contemporary sources on art theory. The volume includes illustrations of numerous imitative works after D?rer. As well as being the first book to fully address the early reception of the most important of German Renaissance artists, Reframing Albrecht D?rer shows how appropriation is a crucial concept for understanding artistic practice during the early modern period.

Book excerpt: - 2020 marks the 500th anniversary of Albrecht Dürer's year-long journey to the Low Countries from 1520 to 1521 - Dürer is one of the most important artists of the Northern Renaissance - Stunningly large close-up details reveal his paintings, drawings and graphic work as never before Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) is one of the most important and influential artists of the Northern Renaissance. He was a painter, printmaker and theorist and knew the major Italian artists of his time, such as Raphael, Bellini and Leonardo da Vinci. His enormous talent and skills as a draughtsman revealed themselves at a very young age: they can already be seen in the silverpoint Self-Portrait made in 1484 when he was barely 13 years old. Patronized from 1512 by the Emperor Maximilian I, Dürer realized numerous engravings, altarpieces, portrait and self-portraits, watercolors and books. His introduction of classical motifs into Northern art, through his knowledge of Italian artists and German humanists, secured his reputation as the most important figure of German Renaissance. Dürer in Detail reveals the work of the German master as never before, in breathtaking, full-page details. Till-Holger Borchert, German art historian and director of the Bruges Museums, describes Dürer's paintings, drawings and graphic masterpieces detail by detail, while offering original insights in clear and accessible language. The book is organized thematically and includes a biography, an annotated list of works and a suggested reading list.

Book excerpt: While he was alive, Drer has published several hundred engravings on which are appeared his initials. At least sixty of his paintings have also survived, and a few other which led art historians dispute whether they are from him. It is impossible today to know how many of his works are lost, but those that have survived, give us a relatively complete view of the range of his work. Drer as rule spent much of his time as a printmaker and often complained that working in oils was time-consuming and badly paid. Finally, there are a thousand of his drawings and watercolors. The range and variety of his work is just amazing. His woodcarvings and engravings made him great and famous all over Europe, and he is commonly considered the best master in this area. As a painter, Drer has the equal success as in the paintings of religious topics, also in those with secular topics. He painted portraits as well as altars. His drawings and watercolors even today strike us with a variety of techniques and were painted with an almost phenomenal precision.

  • Pages : 180 pages

Book excerpt: Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) is a master artist who, with giants like Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt van Rijn, occupies the pinnacle of achievement. His appeal was extraordinary in his lifetime, and it has not diminished since his death. A member of the northern school, he combined Gothic and Renaissance traits in a way that has a particular attraction to the modern eye. Overriding all considerations of style, however, are his talents as an artist of genius, as revealed in his mastery of depiction, in the breadth of his composition, and in the penetration of his portrayal. These are the basis of his fame, past and present. Dürer's crowning achievement was in the graphic media - drawing and printmaking. The only names that come to mind as peers in these are Rembrandt and Goya, and he preceded the Dutchman by a century and the Spaniard by three. In discussing a master artist one picture is worth a thousand words, and one need only turn to the engraving of Melencolia I to see why the Italian Renaissance writer Giorgio Vasari said it was "the most delicate work an engraver could possibly bring off." A comprehensive selection of Dürer's compositions is presented here by the esteemed German art historian Heinz Lüdecke, who has provided a lucid essay that gives essential biographical and historical information, as well as a description and stylistic analysis of the important works in all media. The text is perfectly complemented by the illustrations, which reproduce in color or black and white the heart of Dürer's extant œuvre. For the initiate who wants to familiarize himself with the essential meaning of Dürer and for the connoisseur who wants to savor his remarkable creations, this book serves in a unique way." --

Book Albrecht D rer and the Epistolary Mode of Address

Download or read book Albrecht D rer and the Epistolary Mode of Address written by Shira Brisman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art historians have long looked to letters to secure biographical details; clarify relationships between artists and patrons; and present artists as modern, self-aware individuals. This book takes a novel approach: focusing on Albrecht Dürer, Shira Brisman is the first to argue that the experience of writing, sending, and receiving letters shaped how he treated the work of art as an agent for communication. In the early modern period, before the establishment of a reliable postal system, letters faced risks of interception and delay. During the Reformation, the printing press threatened to expose intimate exchanges and blur the line between public and private life. Exploring the complex travel patterns of sixteenth-century missives, Brisman explains how these issues of sending and receiving informed Dürer’s artistic practices. His success, she contends, was due in large part to his development of pictorial strategies—an epistolary mode of address—marked by a direct, intimate appeal to the viewer, an appeal that also acknowledged the distance and delay that defers the message before it can reach its recipient. As images, often in the form of prints, coursed through an open market, and artists lost direct control over the sale and reception of their work, Germany’s chief printmaker navigated the new terrain by creating in his images a balance between legibility and concealment, intimacy and public address.
