Book Neo Conservatism and Child Care Services in Alberta

Download or read book Neo Conservatism and Child Care Services in Alberta written by Jacqueline Hayden and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development and delivery of child care services in Canada has never been without controversy. This case study examines the development of the child care system in Alberta, Canada, showing how the role of the government proceeded through four distinct phases, each determining a different outcome for child care stakeholders. Power mechanisms and covert policy making are described as mitigating against strengthening the child care system in Alberta, including failing to develop a bureaucratic infrastructure, creating tensions in the child care community, limiting resources for policy implementation, and delaying action by studying the issues. The study notes that under the tenets of neo-conservatism, the current fifth phase is redefining the child care paradigm and has resulted in the marginalization of child care. The neo-conservative principles of decreased government spending, privatization, and minimized government intervention have resulted in a radically decentralized approach to social service management that has not worked well for the child care system. Explanations that child care was developed and maintained to buttress the welfare system for needy families or to support increased employment for women are cited to rationalize the dismantling of care because it reinforces the breakdown of normal community self-help programs and constrains mothers from taking responsibility for their children. To the extent that the example of Alberta is a prototype of child care developments elsewhere, the analysis of developments and outcomes can assist in forewarning those who are concerned about the maintenance and development of public child care. Book Working Mothers and the Child Care Dilemma

Download or read book Working Mothers and the Child Care Dilemma written by Lisa Pasolli and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twentieth century, child care policy in British Columbia matured in the shadow of a political uneasiness with working motherhood. Working Mothers and the Child Care Dilemma examines how ideas about motherhood, paid work, and social welfare influenced universal child care discussions and consistently pushed access to child care to the margins of BC’s social policy agenda. Charting the growth of the child care movement in this province, Lisa Pasolli examines the arrival of Vancouver’s first crèche in 1912, the teetering steps forward during the debates of the interwar years, the development of provincial child care policy, the rebellious advancements of second-wave feminists in the 1960s and 1970s, and the maturation of provincial and national child care politics since the mid-70s. In addition to revealing much about historical attitudes toward women’s roles, Working Mothers and the Child Care Dilemma celebrates the efforts of mothers and advocates who, for decades, have lobbied for child care as a central part of women’s rights as workers, parents, and citizens.

This book was released on 2024-08-28 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supporting Early Childhood Practice Through Difficult Times encourages early childhood students and practitioners to take stock of current practices and pedagogies in light of challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, ecological concerns, and regulatory pressures. The contributions from various scholars and practitioners present a range of theoretical concepts as well as innovative practice examples, inviting deep reflection on your own beliefs and attitudes. They examine and envisage different ways of working with and for young children, their families and communities for a better future. Chapters in this timely book include experts from around the globe examining key issues in early childhood education. The first section questions the increasing digitalisation in nurseries and pre-schools and its impact on staff members, parents and children. The second section focuses on workforce development, management systems and the role of parents in policymaking. The third section showcases innovative pedagogical approaches looking beyond widely accepted early learning goals, assessments and curricula to develop inclusive environments that foster all children’s development and learning. Lastly, the fourth section steps back from day-to-day practice and considers what concern for the environment, social justice and posthumanism means for early childhood education and pedagogy. This book will be a key resource for early childhood education and care practitioners, graduate students, policymakers and researchers facilitating the step from the here-and-now to revised future practice and policy that will enable all children to flourish.

Book Canada s Labour Market Training System

Download or read book Canada s Labour Market Training System written by Bob Barnetson and published by Athabasca University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does the current labour market training system function and whose interests does it serve? In this introductory textbook, Bob Barnetson wades into the debate between workers and employers, and governments and economists to investigate the ways in which labour power is produced and reproduced in Canadian society. After sifting through the facts and interpretations of social scientists and government policymakers, Barnetson interrogates the training system through analysis of the political and economic forces that constitute modern Canada. This book not only provides students of Canada’s division of labour with a general introduction to the main facets of labour-market training—including skills development, post-secondary and community education, and workplace training—but also encourages students to think critically about the relationship between training systems and the ideologies that support them.
