Book excerpt: Whether or not food passes into the truth of human nature" was among the questions that scholastic theologians routinely disputed. Many twelfth-century theologians, including Peter Lombard, argued that the "truth" of every human body came entirely from Adam, and that food stimulated its growth but was not incorporated into it. Parisian masters in the thirteenth-century rejected Lombard's position; some Oxford masters defended it, appealing to theories of light and prime matter. The first part of the book traces the origins of such questions in theology, medicine and natural philosophy. The second part analyzes their treatment and development in thirteenth-century theology. The study illumines theologians' opinions about reproduction, fetal development, growth, nutrition, digestion, aging, corporeal identity, matter, physical quantity, the resurrection, and the relationship between theology and the natural sciences.

Book Manifest Destiny s Underworld

Download or read book Manifest Destiny s Underworld written by Robert E. May and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2003-04-03 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating study sheds new light on antebellum America's notorious "filibusters--the freebooters and adventurers who organized or participated in armed invasions of nations with whom the United States was formally at peace. Offering the first full-scale analysis of the filibustering movement, Robert May relates the often-tragic stories of illegal expeditions into Cuba, Mexico, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and other Latin American countries and details surprising numbers of aborted plots, as well. May investigates why thousands of men joined filibustering expeditions, how they were financed, and why the U.S. government had little success in curtailing them. Surveying antebellum popular media, he shows how the filibustering phenomenon infiltrated the American psyche in newspapers, theater, music, advertising, and literature. Condemned abroad as pirates, frequently in language strikingly similar to modern American denunciations of foreign terrorists, the filibusters were often celebrated at home as heroes who epitomized the spirit of Manifest Destiny. May concludes by exploring the national consequences of filibustering, arguing that the practice inflicted lasting damage on U.S. relations with foreign countries and contributed to the North-South division over slavery that culminated in the Civil War.

Book Fin s de Si cle in Scandinavian Perspective

Download or read book Fin s de Si cle in Scandinavian Perspective written by Faith Ingwersen and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1993 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays focusing on the artistic innovations of Scandinavian fin de siècles. This collection of essays by eminent Scandinavists focusses on works and artistic movements prominent towards the ends of the last four centuries. The last decade of each century has seen amazing innovations in Scandinavian arts, especially in literature: the flowering of genres in national languages in the 1600s, the bawdy rococo voice of Carl Michael Bellman in the 1700s, the rise of Scandinavian drama with August Strindberg and Henrik Ibsen and the neoromanticism of the premodernistic novels of Hamsun. Each essay is a study from the unique perspective of one of the field's foremost European or American scholars and is inspired by the Renaissance interests of the Norwegian scholar Harlad S. Naess. The collection as a whole contributes to the creation of a modern, multilayered view of the beginnings and endings of the seventeenth-, eighteenth-, nineteenth- and twentieth-century worlds in Scandinavia and Scandinavian America.

Book The Life and Thought of Louis Lowy

Download or read book The Life and Thought of Louis Lowy written by Lorrie Gardella and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis Lowy (1920–1991), an international social worker and gerontologist, rarely spoke publicly about the Holocaust. During the last months of his life, however, he recorded an oral narrative that explores his activities during the Holocaust as the formative experiences of his career. Whether caring for youth in concentration camps, leading an escape from a death march, or forming the self-government of a Jewish displaced persons center, Lowy was guided by principles that would later inform his professional identity as a social worker, including the values of human worth and self-determination, the interdependence of generations, and the need for social participation and lifelong learning. Drawing on Lowy’s oral narrative and accounts from three other Holocaust survivors who witnessed his work in the Terezín ghetto and the Deggendorf Displaced Persons Center, Gardella offers a rich portrait of Lowy’s personal and professional legacy. In chronicling his life, Gardella also uncovers a larger story about Jewish history and the meaning of the Holocaust in the development of the social work profession.
