Book excerpt: Excerpt from Albert Gallatin Education, however, is not confined to instruo tion, nor is the influence of an academy to b measured by the extent of its curriculum, or the proficiency of its students, but rather by its genera) tone, moral and intellectual. The Calvinism of Geneva, narrow in its religious sense, was friendly to the spread of knowledge; and had this not been the case, the side influences of Roman Catholicism on the one hand, and the liberal spirit of the age on the other, would have tempered its exclusive tendency. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Portraits of Albert Gallatin The statement made in A Great Peace Maker, the Diary of James Gallatin, that the Munier Romilly portrait was painted in Geneva in 1 815 is certainly incorrect. It is the portrait of a man about twenty years older. For one thing, in the miniature by Rath, which is dated 181 5, Galla tin's hair is black, while in the Munier - Romilly it is white. At the moment of going to press I am informed that this picture is believed to be owned by Madame Ernest Dunant, of Geneva. Download or read book The Life of Albert Gallatin Classic Reprint written by Henry Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Albert Gallatin A large part of the following biography relates to a period of American history as yet unwritten, and is intended to supply historians with material which, except in such a form, would be little likely to see the light. The principal private source from which the author has drawn his information is of course the rich collection of papers which Albert Gallatin left behind him in the hands of his only now surviving son and literary executor, under whose direction these volumes are published. By the liberality and courtesy of Mr. Evarts, Secretary of State, and the active assistance of the admirable organization of the State Department, much material in the government archives at Washington has been made accessible, without which the story must have been little more than a fragment. The interesting series of letters addressed to Joseph H. Nicholson are drawn from the Nicholson mss., which Judge Alexander B. Hagner kindly placed in the author's hands at a moment when he had abandoned the hope of tracing them. For other valuable papers and information he is indebted to Miss Sarah N. Randolph, of Edgehill, the representative of Mr. Jefferson, the N icholases, and the Randolphs. The persevering inquiries of Mr. William Wirt Henry, of Richmond, have resulted in filling some serious gaps in the narrative, and the antiquarian research of Mr. James Veech, of Pittsburg, has been freely put at the author's service. Finally, he has to recognize the unfailing generosity with which his numerous and troublesome demands have been met by one whose path it is his utmost hope in some slight degree to have. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Albert Gallatin Dow, 1808-1908 At your request I give you some reminiscences of my life. Now that we are well within the year of my one hundredth anniversary, I will con ne myself particularly to those incidents that I think have some bearing on my longevity, only deviating to add interest for the younger members of our family. - A. G. D. My first recollection of anything, is of the ferry-boat crossing the Connecticut River when my father moved his family from Plainfield, N. H., to Hartland, Vt. I was born August 16, 1808, and we moved in May before I was three years old. I recollect many things of our home in Hartland - the large meadow running down to the Connecticut River; the house, a large white colonial building; the great room upstairs with its fireplace, and my sisters spinning by the light of pine knots while some one of the family read; the Masonic Lodge meeting in that room, where my father was the master. I remember of his going off to Indiana to look for a new home, and of his return; that on that trip he rode a very fine black mare of ours; she would not let any boy on her back, but my mother used to ride her. Book A Great Peace Maker

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Great Peace Maker: The Diary of James Gallatin, Secretary to Albert Gallatin, 1813-1827 In 1875 my grandfather, James Gallatin, handed me a large sealed packet, telling me it contained his Diary from 1813 until 1827, also many important private documents. I was not in any case to publish any part of it until 1900. He died the following year. It lay unopened and nearly forgotten until last year. On reading it, I found it of the deepest interest. This decided me (after weeding out large portions and suppressing anything that might offend) to offer it to the public. It throws a very clear light on the events leading up to the Treaty of Ghent, and on the actual conclusion of that treaty. James accompanied bis father, Albert Gallatin, as private and confidential secretary. He was sixteen years of age when the Diary opens. Albert Gallatin held a unique position. Born at Geneva in 1761, of one of the most aristocratic families, he was left an orphan at an early age, and was brought up by bis grandmother, Madame de Gallatin-Vaudenet. She was a woman of very strong character, an intimate friend of the Landgrave of Hesse Cassel, and also of Voltaire. Albert Gallatin was much influenced by the latter's liberal theories; also he had imbibed the ideas of Rousseau and Condorcet. At the age of nineteen his grandmother informed him that she intended placing him in the army of the Landgrave with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. His answer was, "I will not serve a tyrant." At the home of his dominating old Grandmother when a child he had often met Voltaire, whose philosophy and sage advice made a deep impression on his mind.
