Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From humble beginnings, Rome became perhaps the greatest intercontinental power in the world. Why did this historic city become so much more influential than its neighbor, nearby Latium, which was peopled by more or less the same stock? Over the years, historians, political analysts, and sociologists have discussed this question ad infinitum, without considering one underlying factor that led to the rise of Rome--the geology now hidden by the modern city. This book demonstrates the important link between the history of Rome and its geologic setting in a lively, fact-filled narrative sure to interest geology and history buffs and travelers alike. The authors point out that Rome possessed many geographic advantages over surrounding areas: proximity to a major river with access to the sea, plateaus for protection, nearby sources of building materials, and most significantly, clean drinking water from springs in the Apennines. Even the resiliency of Rome's architecture and the stability of life on its hills are underscored by the city's geologic framework. If carried along with a good city map, this book will expand the understanding of travelers who explore the eternal city's streets. Chapters are arranged geographically, based on each of the seven hills, the Tiber floodplain, ancient creeks that dissected the plateau, and ridges that rise above the right bank. As an added bonus, the last chapter consists of three field trips around the center of Rome, which can be enjoyed on foot or by using public transportation.

Book excerpt: This early work by Henry James was originally published in 1909 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. Henry James was born in New York City in 1843. One of thirteen children, James had an unorthodox early education, switching between schools, private tutors and private reading.. James published his first story, 'A Tragedy of Error', in the Continental Monthly in 1864, when he was twenty years old. In 1876, he emigrated to London, where he remained for the vast majority of the rest of his life, becoming a British citizen in 1915. From this point on, he was a hugely prolific author, eventually producing twenty novels and more than a hundred short stories and novellas, as well as literary criticism, plays and travelogues. Amongst James's most famous works are The Europeans (1878), Daisy Miller (1878), Washington Square (1880), The Bostonians (1886), and one of the most famous ghost stories of all time, The Turn of the Screw (1898). We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

CICERO'S TUSCULAN VILLA. In considering the much debated question of the situation of Cicero's Tusculan villa, the first point to be settled, is that of the limits and territory of Tusculum. One of the most definite passages to be found among the Latin authors upon the situation of Tusculum, is in Strabo's Geography, (lib. V), where he states that: Nearer to Rome thaa the mountains of Tibur and Preneste, (Tivoli and Palestrina), there is another elevation, connected with the Alban mountain, from which it is separated by the Algidan valley. Upon this height, Tusculum is situated, a well arranged city, adorned with surrounding plantations and appropriate buildings, especially in the part overhanging the plains towards Home. For here, on this side, Tusculum is a fertile and well watered hill, in many parts gently sloping, and containing the most splendid palaces. Joined to it, is the country at the foot of the Alban mountain, having the same natural advantages and the same cultivation. The neighboring fields partly extend towards Rome and her suburbs, and partly towards the sea; the latter are less healthful, but the others are salubrious and well cultivated. From this general description, the more to be depended upon, that it was written in Tusculum itself, in the villa of the emperor, Tiberias, to whose family Straho belonged, it is evident that Tusculum included, not only the summit of the height, but also all its slopes and the fields below, to a considerable extent, as well as the " country at the foot of the Alban mountain. Another conclusion from this passage, is, that since, upon the gentle slopes towards Rome, were most splendid palaces, among these, would surely have been Cicero's, or that which he had...

Book Plio Quaternary Volcanism in Italy

Download or read book Plio Quaternary Volcanism in Italy written by Angelo Peccerillo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-12 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central-Southern Italy and the Tyrrhenian Sea are the sites of extensive Plio-Quaternary magmatic activity. The rock compositions include crustal anatectic granites and rhyolites, tholeiitic, calc-alkaline, shoshonitic volcanics, and potassic to ultrapotassic and Na-alkaline volcanics. This very wide compositional variation makes Italian magmatism one of the most complex petrological issues, the understanding of which is a challenge for modern petrology and geochemistry. This book summarises the petrological, geochemical and volcanological characteristics of Italian Plio-Quaternary volcanism, and discusses petrogenetic hypotheses and possible geodynamics settings. The book is written for petrologists and geochemists, but fundamental geochemical information is well presented and the use of excessive jargon is avoided, making the book readable to a wide audience of Earth scientists.
