Valdez is located in Prince William Sound on Alaska's Gulf coast and is surrounded by natural beauty unequaled, in my opinion, anywhere else on earth. Though my commercial fishing days are far behind me in life, I truly enjoy writing stories I hope inspire children to work hard and follow their dreams.

Book Working on the Edge

Download or read book Working on the Edge written by Spike Walker and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 1993-03-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No profession pits man against nature more brutally than king crab fishing in the frigid, unpredictable waters of the Bering Sea. The yearly death toll is staggering (forty-two men in 1988 alone); the conditions are beyond most imaginations (90-mph Arctic winds, 25-foot seas, and super-human stretches of on-deck labor); but the payback, if one survives can be tens of thousands of dollars for a month-long season. In a breathtaking, action-packed account that combines his personal story with the stories of survivors of the industry's most harrowing disasters, Spike Walker re-creates the boom years of Alaskan crab fishing--a modern-day gold rush that drew hundreds of fortune-and adventure-hunters to Alaska's dangerous waters--and the crash that followed.

Book excerpt: The story of two brothers, Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand, who are maverick fisherman on the Bering Sea. They share the skippering duties on board their family-operated vessel, the Time Bandit. They are totally outrageous characters, taking on what is known to be the most dangerous job in the world. The Bering Sea is dangerous and mercurial and can steal years from a fisherman's life and Time Bandit is the name of the fishing vessel the brothers use to hook the alaskan King Crabs. In pursuit of their daily catch, the brothers brave ice floes and heaving waves 60ft high, the perils of 1000lb steel crab traps thrown about by the wind and the constant menace of open water. The details of their childhood make you wonder how they ever lived past the age of ten! This amazing story, co-written with Malcolm MacPherson, brings to life the heart-in-your-throat existence of the Hillstrand brothers.

Book Movements of King Crabs Tagged and Released in Shumagin Islands Area 1957 62

Download or read book Movements of King Crabs Tagged and Released in Shumagin Islands Area 1957 62 written by Murray L. Hayes and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the summer of 1957, 1,999 male king crabs (Paralithodes camtschatica) were tagged and released in the Shumagin Islands-False Pass area south of the Alaska Peninsula. By August 15, 1962, 13.8 percent of the number released had been returned. Tagged crabs from single offshore release locations were usually caught in more than one bay, suggesting that the summer stock offshore was made up of components found in separate locations at other times of the year. Tagged crabs released inside or near the mouths of bays were usually returned from the same general area, suggesting little movement between bays. Minimum distances of individual crab movements between tagging and recovery varied from 0 to 110 miles, but more than 90 percent of the returns were taken less than 35 miles from the tagging site. No recoveries were made by the U.S. or Japanese fishery in the Bering Sea. Growth of the crabs was similar to that previously reported. Biennial and triennial molt periods were indicated for large crabs.

Download or read book King Crabs of the World written by Bradley G. Stevens and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With species existing in all subpolar seas, king crabs are one of the most valuable seafoods. Major fluctuations in their abundance have stimulated a flurry of research and a rapid expansion of the scientific literature in the last decade. King Crabs of the World: Biology and Fisheries Management consolidates extensive knowledge on the biology, systematics, anatomy, life history, and fisheries of king crabs and presents it in a single volume. This book is the first comprehensive scientific reference devoted to the biology and fisheries of king crabs. The first part of the book describes king crabs and their place in the world, covering geographic distribution, depth and temperature ranges, and maps of known habitats. Chapters examine phylogenetic relationships, evolutionary history and phylogeography, internal and external anatomy of king crabs, and the history of North Pacific fisheries. There is also a chapter that presents a comprehensive overview of diseases and other anomalies of king crabs. The second part of the book describes the life history and biology of various king crab species, including embryonic development and environmental factors, the development and biology of larvae, the ecology and biology of juvenile stages, reproductive strategies of fished species, and the growth and feeding of king crabs and their ecological impacts. The third part of the book discusses human and environmental interactions with king crabs through fisheries, management, and ecosystems. Topics include the impacts of fishing—bycatch, handling, and discard mortality—king crab aquaculture and stock enhancement, and king crabs from various regions such as Southern Hemisphere waters, the Barents Sea, and Alaska. A chapter synthesizing various aspects of king crab biology provides an ecosystem-scale perspective and the final chapter presents the author’s outlook on the future of king crab research and populations.

Book Biological Field Techniques for Lithodid Crabs

Download or read book Biological Field Techniques for Lithodid Crabs written by William E. Donaldson and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The harvest of Alaska king crabs in the North Pacific and Bering Sea reaches about 18 million pounds per year, one-tenth of the bonanza 1980s catch. While king crab stocks are recovering from the crash, efforts such as this book on standardizing data collection promise to further improve fishery management. Geared to fishery observers, shoreside samplers, shellfish researchers, and fishermen, the book is illustrated with line drawings, maps, and numerous color photos, and it is printed on waterproof paper. Topics include taxonomy, life history, distribution, anatomy, and diseases. The authors are expert crab biologists at Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the agency responsible for managing the crab fishery.

Download or read book Aleutian Ballad written by Larry Anthony Pannell and published by . This book was released on 2017-07-08 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those of you that are fans of the Deadliest Catch television show will love this book. The Aleutian Ballad was featured on season two and noted for a 60-foot rouge wave hit the boat broadside in the Bering Sea. If you are in Ketchikan, Alaska you will love this tour. Over the years I have taken this excursion over a dozen times and have enjoyed every trip. Captain and owner Dave Lethin and his crew of merry misfits are "old salts" and extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. In this book I try to capture the experiences they share giving you a feel of what it is like on a real crab fishing boat. One of the highlights is traveling to nearby Annette Island. There 40-50 American Bald Eagles swarm out of the trees like mosquitos and diving only feet from the boat feeding on fish thrown into the water by the crew. The book is 8x10 inches and designed as a coffee table book filled with large photographs of the crew, guests and wildlife you experience during the tour.If you purchase this book a donation will be made to the Aleutian Ballad Crab Fisherman's Memorial Fund. Proceeds of the fund are distributed to the families of those lost in the Bering Sea.
