Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of spending his early childhood in Berlin, Germany during WWII, Wolfgang had developed a love for animals and nature as well as for adventure. After the war, living with his parents and his younger siblings in Braunschweig, Germany, he finished school, became a journeyman glassblower, got married and settled down to, what would be for most people, a promising future. But his childhood dreams of adventure grew to a restless longing for distant lands, and soon he had talked his young wife into emigrating to Canada with him. A year later the couple was on their way to California, USA and heading toward a divorce. Being single again in California during the 60s had attractions for a young man in his 20s, but with a couple of like-minded friends Wolfgang soon was heading north again, all the way to Alaska. In Alaska new opportunities for the fulfillment of his childhood dreams pre- sented itself and were gladly taken advantage of. Today in advanced age, Wolf, as he is known nowadays, is still living on his own terms with his dog, Thorak, in a small village on the Yukon, and his philosophy is that everything happens for a reason!

Download or read book Travels Among the Dena written by Frederica de Laguna and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This robust and engaging travel narrative re-creates a remarkable adventure in the summer of 1935, when Frederica de Laguna, then in her late 20s, led a party of three other scientists down the rivers of the middle and lower Yukon valley, making a geological and archaeological reconnaissance. De Laguna has based her story on her field notes, journals, and letters home. She augments this first-hand account with excerpts from the reports of earlier explorers and data published after her trip. The result is a fascinating and informative cross-cut of historical events along the Yukon River and its tributaries. Travels Among the Dena chronicles the expedition from its outfitting in Seattle and the trip by steamer and railway to Fairbanks and Nenana, through an 80-day journey on skiffs down the Tanana and Yukon rivers to Holy Cross near the coast, with side trips on the Koyukuk, Khotol, and Innoko rivers, before a one-day return flight to Fairbanks with pioneer bush pilot Noel Wien. Maps illustrate the route taken downriver, and the author’s photographs capture images of the time. The resulting volume is both a delightful addition to the literature of travel adventure in Alaska and an important contribution to the discipline of anthropology.

Summer offers the finest river journeys. There are sudden storms, log jams, whirlpools, and wildlife encounters in the immense panorama of wilderness and water—with a vivid portrait of the dynamics of being a team member in the bush. The remote prospecting stories are thrilling and risky, and demand a lifetime of bush skills. They end with a resounding bear story that catalyzes the true essence of living and exploring as an Alaskan. All are top notch adventures with good dogs and old machines, undersized kayaks and cantankerous boats, with a touch of lunacy and a can-do attitude, both essential dispositions for exploring Alaska's wilds.

Download or read book Kings of the Yukon written by Adam Weymouth and published by Penguin Group. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Yukon River is 2,000 miles long and the longest stretch of free-flowing river in the United States. In this riveting examination of one of the last wild places on earth, Adam Weymouth canoes from Canada's Yukon Territory, through Alaska, to the Bering Sea. The result is a book that shows how even the most remote wilderness is affected by the same forces reshaping the rest of the planet. Every summer, hundreds of thousands of king salmon migrate the distance of the Yukon to their spawning grounds, where they breed and die, in what is the longest salmon run in the world. For the people who live along the river, salmon were once the lifeblood of commerce and local culture. But climate change and globalized economy have fundamentally altered the balance between people and nature; the health and numbers of king salmon are in question, as is the fate of the communities that depend on them. Traveling down the Yukon as the salmon migrate, a four-month journey through untrammeled landscape, Weymouth traces the fundamental interconnectedness of people and fish through searing and unforgettable portraits of the individuals he encounters. He offers a powerful, nuanced glimpse into indigenous cultures, and into our ever-complicated relationship with the natural world. Weaving in the rich history of salmon across time as well as the science behind their mysterious life cycle, 'Kings of the Yukon' is extraordinary adventure and nature writing at its most urgent and poetic"--Dust jacket.

Book An Alaskan Adventure

Download or read book An Alaskan Adventure written by Dolores Palata Vician and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the fall of 1962 to the spring of 1963, my husband, Ed, our five children and myself lived in an Eskimo village on the vast tundra land of Alaska. We were thousands of miles from our suburban home outside of Chicago, IL. Ed had accepted a job as the superintendent of the largest state operated school in Alaska. We were living in an Eskimo village, Bethel, so named by the Moravian missionaries who had established a church on the Kuskokwin River many years before. (The Kutskokwin River is the second largest river in Alaska, surpassed only by the mighty Yukon River) As for Bethel, it was over four hundred miles from Anchorage, Alaska, on the same line of longitude as Honolulu, Hawaii. By November, it could only be reached by airplane - weather permitting. This is the story of our year in Alaska, living in a Quonset hut, situated next to the school. It is based on a daily journal I kept of our experiences there. We had left behind many conveniences such as an automatic washer, dryer and dish washer. Instead we had accepted a comparatively primitive way of life. I cooked on an oil-burning stove, which also served as a space heater for the front of the Quonset hut. Our water had to be delivered by truck. Our bathroom had a chemical toilet, called a "honey bucket," which needed to be emptied several times a week. Our accomodations were cramped compared to the split-level home we had left in Illinois. However, there were many compensations. We soon realized that we were surrounded by many kind and caring people. Although we led a simple life in our year in the Alaskan Eskimo village, the experience was an enriching one for the entire family. This is that story.
