Book excerpt: Advances in Parasitology, Volume 98, first published in 1963, contains comprehensive and up-to-date reviews on all areas of interest in contemporary parasitology. The latest release in this series contains chapters on The battle against flystrike – past research and new prospects through genomics, Life history, systematics and evolution of the Diplostomoidea Poirier, 1886: progress, promises and challenges emerging from molecular studies, Hook, line and infection: a guide to culturing parasites, establishing infections and assessing immune responses in the three-spined stickleback, and Trypanosoma congolense: a molecular toolkit and resources for studying a major livestock pathogen and model trypanosome. The series includes medical studies of parasites of major influence, such as Plasmodium falciparum and trypanosomes. The series also contains reviews of more traditional areas, such as zoology, taxonomy, and life history, which help to shape current thinking and applications. - Informs and updates on all the latest developments in the field of parasitology - Includes medical studies of parasites of major influence, such as Plasmodium falciparum and trypanosomes - Contains contributions from leading authorities and industry experts - Features reviews of more traditional areas, such as zoology, taxonomy, and life history, which help to shape current thinking and applications
Download or read book Biology and Conservation of Martens Sables and Fishers written by Keith B. Aubry and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mammals in the genus Martes are mid-sized carnivores of great importance to forest ecosystems. This book, the successor to Martens, Sables, and Fishers: Biology and Conservation, provides a scientific basis for management and conservation efforts designed to maintain or enhance the populations and habitats of Martes species throughout the world. The twenty synthesis chapters contained in this book bring together the perspectives and expertise of 63 scientists from twelve countries, and are organized by the five key themes of evolution and biogeography, population biology and management, habitat ecology and management, research techniques, and conservation. Recent developments in research technologies such as modeling and genetics, biological knowledge about pathogens and parasites, and concerns about the potential effects of global warming on the distribution and status of Martes populations make new syntheses of these areas especially timely. The volume provides an overview of what is known while clarifying initiatives for future research and conservation priorities, and will be of interest to mammalogists, resource managers, applied ecologists, and conservation biologists.

Download or read book The Biology and Evolution of Trematodes written by K. V. Galaktionov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-10-31 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book by K. V. Galaktionov and A. A. Dobrovolskij maintains the tra- tion of monographs devoted to detailed coverage of digenetic tr matodes in the tradition of B. Dawes (1946) and T. A. Ginetsinskaya (1968). In this - spect, the book is traditional in both its form and content. In the beginning (Chapter 1), the authors provide a consistent analysis of the morphological features of all life cycle stages. Importantly, they present a detailed char- terization of sporocysts and rediae whose morphological-functional orga- zation has never been comprehensively described in modern literature. The authors not only list morphological characteristics, but also analyze the functional significance of different morphological structures and hypothesize about their evolution. Special attention is given to specific features of m- phogenesis in all stages of the trematode life cycle. On this basis, the authors provide several original suggestions about the possible origins of morp- logical evolution of the parthenogenetic (asexual) and the hermaphroditic generations. This is followed by a detailed consideration of the various m- phological-biological adaptations that ensure the successful completion of the complex life cycles of these parasites (Chapter 2). Life cycles inherent in different trematodes are subject to a special analysis (Chapter 3). The authors distinguish several basic types of life cycles and suggest an original interpretation of their evolutionary origin. Chapter 4 features the analysis of structure and the dynamics of trematode populations and is unusual for a monograph of this type.
