Book Alaia Livre de Collection The Secret Alchemy of a Fashion Show

Download or read book Alaia Livre de Collection The Secret Alchemy of a Fashion Show written by Assouline, Prosper and published by . This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My tribute to a true genius and a friend." - Prosper Assouline For over 35 years, Prosper Assouline and Azzedine Alaia were close friends. As a tribute to their friendship, Prosper Assouline decided to republish Assouline's 1992 "Collector's Book" on Alaia's Summer 1992 show that lays bare the work of a creative artist. Never before had a haute couture designer given such an in-depth view of the secret alchemy that goes into a fashion show. Azzedine Alaia was not one to do things the way everyone else had done, so it was fitting that he would be the first to produce such a work. What this book offers is the complete story of a fashion show from start to finish, including: everyone participating, all of the objects required, and every item of decor or inspiration which helped form Alaia's work. It is like a seismographic recording of all the emotions, colours, fabrics, and shapes that go into creating a fashion show. The French call such a show a "collection," hence the title Livre de Collection, which offers an inside view of an intensely creative universe. This book also redresses what could be described as an injustice of the fashion world by giving a durable form to the eminently ephemeral event that is a couture show. It is a permanent record of the creative chaos that is a feature of every fashion collection, an ordered reflection of the fragile and wonderful craziness in which a creative artist lives and works. A faithful mirror, this "Collector's Book" reflects the intense and magnificent work of artist Azzedine Alaia. AUTHOR: A master of style, Prosper Assouline is known for merging the modern and the classical in publishing and creative design. With a vision of bringing luxury into the world of print, he founded Assouline Publishing with his wife Martine, in Paris in 1994, creating a world of exclusivity in books and brand identity. Under Prosper's direction, Assouline has invented a visual language that is internationally recognised for its excellence. 200 illustrations

Book The Runner

Download or read book The Runner written by David Samuels and published by Tantor eBooks. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Runner tells the remarkable true story of a teenage drifter and petty thief named James Hogue who woke up one cold winter morning in a storage shed in Utah and decided to start his life anew. Re-imagining himself as a self-educated ranch hand named Alexi Indris-Santana who read Plato under the stars and could run a mile in under four minutes, Hogue applied and was accepted to Princeton University, where he excelled academically, made the track team, and became a member of the elite Ivy Club. Echoing both The Great Gatsby and The Talented Mr. Ripley, the story of Hogue’s life before and after he went to Princeton is both an immensely affecting portrait of a dreamer and a striking indictment of the Ivy League “meritocracy” to which Hogue wanted so badly to belong. Drawing elegant parallels between Hogue’s ambitions and the American myth of self-invention, while also examining his own uneasy identification with his troubled subject, David Samuels has fashioned a powerful metaphor for the corruptions of the American dream, revealing exceptional gifts as a reporter and literary stylist.

Book EndoMEtriosis

Download or read book EndoMEtriosis written by Tamer Seckin, MD and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the award-winning Dr. Tamer Seckin comes a book written for all of the Endo Warriors out there, from the thirteen-year-old girl who is being told that her pain is “part of becoming a women,” to the woman who has been misdiagnosed for decades—and needs to know she is not alone. Every girl has the right to be pain-free. To live the life they want to live. The journey toward new and happy lives for young women begins now! Endometriosis is a physically and mentally debilitating disease that has tortured women for centuries. It currently affects 176 million of childbearing age worldwide, including one in ten in the U.S. Despite those startling statistics, this horrific and incurable ailment is still relatively unknown to the general population and medical professionals alike. Symptoms of heavy periods and excruciating pain most often begin in middle school or high school, yet doctors take an average of twelve years to diagnose it in a patient. As a result, these undiagnosed and misdiagnosed women suffer into at least their mid-twenties or early thirties, repeatedly told that the pain is in their minds, that it’s simply part of becoming a woman, or that it’s caused by some other disease or condition. That nonsense must stop, and it must stop now! This book will explain what endo is in terms that adolescents can understand, along with potential remedies, treatments to avoid, and how to manage the psychological and social effects of the disease. It will also include riveting stories from women in their teens and mid-twenties, and from those closest to them such as mothers, fathers, teachers, and coaches. One of the most terrifying aspects of having endo is feeling like nobody believes the pain is real or severe, which can cause a woman to feel scared, isolated, and depressed. This book will fully arm her with the truth and knowledge about the disease so that she can overcome her fears and confidently advocate for herself. If her cry for help has been dismissed by anyone, she will be able to educate them so that they can empathize with her and fully support her in her quest for healing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ambitious, sweeping saga. As epic as it is queer. Lago was only a child when the shapeshifter entrusted the wolf-like mask to his care—an artifact so powerful that it could come to shape the entire world of Noss. Now that he is coming of age, Lago is becoming ever more fearful of the ominous relic’s influence, of the empire who has scented its trail and is coming after it. Coming after him. Aided by his best friend, an enigmatic scout, and his trusty dog, Lago seeks refuge in the vastness of the Heartpine Dome. The eighty-mile-wide structure had remained sealed for centuries, safeguarding more than mere secrets. Now that the dome’s entrails are stirring, the mysteries of the long-vanished Miscam tribes are coming to light, and the shapeshifting animal spirits are making their return. Powers untold hide behind the blinkless eyeholes of the canid mask, powers that could tip the balance in the war. Lago is barely beginning to learn how to wield the dark visage, but he can already feel its potential. … And he can feel a different change coming, deep in his marrow. Riveting in scope and worldbuilding, and exquisitely illustrated by the author, this tale of transformation and self-discovery is filled with unabashed wonder and a lust for places unknown. A profoundly queer adventure that explores sexuality, our connections to other species, unconventional kinds of love, and the very nature of consciousness. Wolf of Withervale is the first installment of the Noss Saga, an epic LGBTQ+ fantasy series.

Book Only Love Can Break Your Heart

Download or read book Only Love Can Break Your Heart written by David Samuels and published by Tantor eBooks. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing for Harper's Magazine and The New Yorker over the last decade, David Samuels has penned a disillusioned love song to the often amusing and sometimes fatal American habit of self-delusion, reporting from a landscape peopled by salesmen, dreamers, radical environmentalists, suburban hip-hop stars, demolition experts, aging baseball legends, billionaire crackpots, and dog track bettors whose heartbreaking failures and occasional successes are illuminated by flashes of anger and humor. Including profiles of disillusioned Pacific Northwest radicals and Nevada nuclear test site workers alongside coverage of Pentagon press conferences and the Super Bowl in Detroit, Only Love Can Break Your Heart proves Samuels to be a wonderful inheritor of the great journalistic tradition established by Gay Talese, Tom Wolfe, and Joan Didion in the 1960s. This first collection of his painstakingly reported and wildly inventive writing reveals the full spectrum of his talents, as well as an unusual sensitivity to both the tragic and comic dissonances bubbling up from the gap between the American promise of endless nirvana and the lives of ordinary citizens who struggle to live out their dreams.

Book Surf Craft

  • Author : Richard Kenvin
  • Publisher : MIT Press

Download or read book Surf Craft written by Richard Kenvin and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of the surfboard, from traditional Hawaiian folk designs to masterpieces of mathematical engineering to mass-produced fiberglass. Surfboards were once made of wood and shaped by hand, objects of both cultural and recreational significance. Today most surfboards are mass-produced with fiberglass and a stew of petrochemicals, moving (or floating) billboards for athletes and their brands, emphasizing the commercial rather than the cultural. Surf Craft maps this evolution, examining surfboard design and craft with 150 color images and an insightful text. From the ancient Hawaiian alaia, the traditional board of the common people, to the unadorned boards designed with mathematical precision (but built by hand) by Bob Simmons, to the store-bought longboards popularized by the 1959 surf-exploitation movie Gidget, board design reflects both aesthetics and history. The decline of traditional alaia board riding is not only an example of a lost art but also a metaphor for the disintegration of traditional culture after the Republic of Hawaii was overthrown and annexed in the 1890s. In his text, Richard Kenvin looks at the craft and design of surfboards from a historical and cultural perspective. He views board design as an exemplary model of mingei, or art of the people, and the craft philosophy of Soetsu Yanagi. Yanagi believed that a design's true beauty and purpose are revealed when it is put to its intended use. In its purest form, the craft of board building, along with the act of surfing itself, exemplifies mingei. Surf Craft pays particular attention to Bob Simmons's boards, which are striking examples of this kind of functional design, mirroring the work of postwar modern California designers. Surf Craft is published in conjunction with an exhibition at San Diego's Mingei International Museum.
