Book Alabama Sketches Classic Reprint

Download or read book Alabama Sketches Classic Reprint written by Samuel Minturn Peck and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alabama Sketches Dan Groby, the negro sexton, knew more of the unquiet pastorate of the Rev. Mr. Crofton than any one at Oakville. Vibrating in his daily duties between the church and the rectory, he lived in the thick of the fight. It was on the forenoon of the day before Easter that Dan, leaning on his broom in front of the church door, narrated to me the events which had occurred during my long absence. "Hit do look peaceful, don't it, sah?" said Dan, gazing up at the little Gothic structure with moss-grown roof shaded by great water-oaks, in whose ivy-draped boughs mocking birds builded and sang perennially. "Dat vine dar's growed a heap since you went away." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Alabama (U. S.): Chiefly Relating to Natural History The following pages contain records of impressions made upon my mind during a residence of seven or eight months in the hilly region of the State of Alabama. It is a part of the United States visited by comparatively few Europeans; and those who have ever seen it have almost exclusively confined their acquaintance with it to the brief glances obtained from the interior of a stage coach, or the deck of a river steamer. The aspect of nature, in particular, presented much that was novel and beautiful to me, and induced me to believe that what had pleased me in the observation might please others in the recital. Book The Flush Times of Alabama and Mississippi

Download or read book The Flush Times of Alabama and Mississippi written by Joseph G. Baldwin and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LARGE PRINT EDITION title: The Flush Times Of Alabama and Mississippi By Joseph G. Baldwin. "SOME of these papers were published in the SOUTHERN LITERARY MESSENGER, and having met with a favorable reception from the Public, and a portion of the Press, the author has yielded to the solicitations of his own vanity, and other flattering friends, and collected them in a volume with other pieces of the same general character. The scheme of the articles he believes to be original in design and execution, - at least, no other work with which he is acquainted, has been published in the United States designed to illustrate the periods, the characters, and the phases of society, some notion of which is attempted to be given in this volume. The author, under the tremor of a first publication, felt strongly inclined to offer a sneaking apology for the many errors and imperfections of his work; such as the fact that the articles were written in haste, under the pressure of professional engagements and amidst constant interruptions; and that he has no time or opportunity for correction and revision. But he anticipated the too ready answer to such a plea: "If you had no time to write well, why did you write at all? Who constrained you? If you were not in dress to see company, why come unbidden into the presence of the public? Why not, at least, wait until you were fit to be presented?" He confesses that he sees no way to answer these tough questions, unless the apology of Falstaff for rushing into the presence of King Hal, "before he had time to have made new liveries" - "stained with travel and sweating with desire to see him," - be a good one - as, "inferring the zeal he had to see him" - "the earnestness of affection" - "the devotion: " but in poor Jack's case, "not to deliberate, not to remember, not to have patience to shift him," was not a very effectual excuse for his coming out of sorts; and we are afraid, that that other Sovereign, the Public, is not more facile of approach, or more credulous of excuses; for, unfortunately, the ardor of an author's greeting is something beyond the heat of the Public's reception of him, or, as Pat expresses it, the reciprocity of feeling is all on one side. Without apology, therefore, he gives these leaves to the winds, - with that feeling of comfort and composure which comes of the knowledge that, let the venture go as it may, he loses little who puts but little at hazard."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richard Hurdis: Tale of Alabama Richard hurdis was singularly successful with the public in spite of much hostile criticism. It was objected, to the story, that it was of too gloomy and savage a character. But the en tire aspect of a sparsely-settled forest, or mountain country, is grave and saddening, even where society is stationary and consistent; and, where society is only in process of formation the saddening and the grave in its aspect are but too apt to take on even sterner features, and to grow into the gloomy and ferocious. It is quite enough, in answer to the objection, to say that the general protraiture is not only a truthful one, in the present case, but that the materials are really of histor ical character. The story is a genuine chronicle of the border region where the scene is laid, and of the period when the date is fixed. Its action, throughout, is founded on well-known facts. Its personages were real, living men; being, doing, and suffer ing, as here reported. Nothing has been extenuate, nothing has been set down in malice. A softer coloring might. Have been employed, and, more frequently, scenes of repose might have been introduced for relieving the intense and fierce aspects of the story; but these would have been out of place in a narrative so dramatic of cast, and where the action is so rapid. EXAMINING A CANDIDATE FOR LICENSE. Some time in the year of Grace, 1837 or 8, during the session of the Circuit Court 0f N ***** * Mississippi, Mr. Thomas Jefferson Knowly made known to his honor, his (K.'s) respectful desire to be turned into a lawyer. Such requests, at that time, were granted pretty much as a matter of course. Practising law, like shinplaster banking or a fight, was pretty much a free thing; but the statute required a certain formula to be gone through, which was an examination of the candidate by the Court, or under its direction. The Judge appointed Henry G * * * and myself to put him through, a task we undertook with much pleasure. Jefferson, or Jeff, as he was called for short, had been lounging about the court-house for some time, refreshing his mind with such information as he could thus pick up on the trial of cases, and from the discussions of the bar in reference to the laws of his country. Having failed in the drygoods line at the cross roads, he was left at leisure to pursue some other calling without being disturbed by any attention to his bill-book. He had taken up a favorable opinion of the law from the glimpses he had got of its physiognomy; and, having borrowed an old copy of Blackstone, went to work to master its contents as well as he could. He had reached about thirtyfive years when this hallucination struck him. He was a stout, heavy fellow--with a head that Spurzheim might have envied: though the contents thereof did not give any new proof of Spurzheim's theory. He was not encumbered with any learning. He had all the apartments of his memory unfilled and waiting to be stored with law. An owl-like gravity sat on him with a solemnity like the picture of sorrowing affection on a tombstone. He was just...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bibliography of Alabama The work here presented is an attempt in the widest sense at a complete State bibliography. An effort has been made to give the titles, arranged alphabetically by authors, of all known publications, whether'books, pamphlets, newspaper and magazine sketches where of apparent value, articles printed in the transactions of societies, publications of societies, official documents, maps, etc. It therefore embraces not only the historical and biographical works relating to the State, its institutions, and its public men, but it includes as well the intellectual product of the literary and business life of the State. And yet it is by no means exhaustive, and of many omissions the compiler is aware. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Bulletin of the Alabama Girls Industrial School written by Merle Marie Stephens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Alabama Girls Industrial School: Domestic Art First and Second Year High School The field covered by Domestic Art is so broad that it is difficult to state all its aims. The following have been prominent in making the course herein described: 1. To make art principles the fundamental basis for all construction work. 2. To relate school life with the life of the home. 3. To allow as great freedom of development as is consistent with intelligent work. Not to teach accuracy at the expense of judgment. 4. To make an introduction to the ethical side of the textile world by a study of the fibers and processes of manufacture as affecting the shopper of today. Discussion. 1. In 1904 a Commission was sent from Prussia to study educational conditions in the United States, with reference to technical instruction and industrial development. In extracts of their reports published in Bulletin No. 2 by The Bureau of Education, there is commendation of our methods of teaching drawing in the elementary schools, but they express great astonishment at finding the evidences of the influence of this drawing so slight in the work of the industrial schools, the high schools, and the American home. "The results of the instruction in the lower grades exceed all expectations. In the advanced grades they do not wholly accord with this auspicious beginning. While the work of the children of eight or nine years is so admirable, the pupils of fifteen or sixteen often offer correspondingly little that is satisfactory." While the above criticism may have been just in 1906, we hope it will be impossible in 1916. The question is sometimes asked us when will all this Domestic Art teaching free us from the slavery of fashion. One answer may be, "Only when physical education and art instruction have so combined forces as to make the individual acknowledge for herself the absurdity of deforming her body and then clothing it in garments showing poor lines, bad proportions, and impossible colors."
