Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alabama State Almanac for 1839 Of the extent of the third, which is in the Tennessee Valley, I am not correctly informed, but it has been found in Jackson and Lawrence, and I have one fine specimen from vedisch County. It mey be a continuation of one of the others, or of that which lies chief ly in Tennessee; but I think not, end this opinion is founded on the physical geography of the country, the height and direction of the intervening mountain chains, and the courses of the rivers. That the two first are entirely distinct is evident from these facts. They are separated, through their whole extent, by 5 pretty broad but low chain of transition mountains, which I have crossed in several places, and in which no cool has been found. The strata, on the eastern and western sides oftthis chain, dip in Opposite directions. It is evident, therefore, that the coal region of this State is of extraordinary extent, though its limits have not been fully ascertained. In my opinion no State of the Union is more abundantly supplied with this necessary article. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Political Power in Alabama

Download or read book Political Power in Alabama written by Anne Permaloff and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political Power in Alabama is the sequel to Anne Permaloff and Carl Grafton's Big Mules and Branchheads, a biography of the populist governor "Big Jim" Folsom. Encompassing the years from 1958 to 1970 and the gubernatorial terms of John Patterson, George Wallace, Lurleen Wallace, and Albert Brewer, the present volume offers a full account of the breakup of the Big Mule Alliance, the elite coalition of Alabama's largest industrial and agricultural interests, and the subsequent effects on the state's political environment. Political Power in Alabama covers an extraordinarily complex set of issues and events, including the civil rights struggle, urban-rural disparities, the lack of party competition, the structure of the tax system, and the economic and cultural gaps separating Alabama and the rest of the South from the nation.

Book The New Politics of the Old South

Download or read book The New Politics of the Old South written by Charles S. Bullock and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest presidential election demonstrated the national importance of the shifting demographics and partisan leanings of the Southern states. When it first appeared in 1998, The New Politics of the Old South broke new ground by examining Southern political trends at the end of the twentieth century. Now in its fourth edition, with all chapters extensively revised and updated to cover events up through the 2008 elections, the authors continue their unique state-by-state analysis of political behavior. Written by the country's leading scholars of Southern politics and designed to be adopted for courses on Southern politics (but accessible to any interested reader), this book traces the shifting trends of the Southern electorate and explains its growing influence on the course of national politics.
