Book Amidaji Emperor Antoku s Mortuary Temple and its Culture

Download or read book Amidaji Emperor Antoku s Mortuary Temple and its Culture written by Naoko Gunji and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you reconstruct a tradition of religious art wiped out by another religion? Naoko Gunji takes up this challenging question in Amidaji. Amidaji was a Buddhist temple in western Japan that, from the twelfth century onwards, overlooked the strait of Dannoura and commemorated the tragic protagonists of The Tale of the Heike who perished in the strait at the end of the Genpei War (1180–1185)―the Heike or the Taira clan and the child-emperor Antoku (1178–1185). Amidaji was destroyed, however, in 1870 amid a nativist, royalist movement of persecuting Buddhism, and replaced by an imperial Shinto shrine. Its art, architecture, and rituals were lost, and have until now been understood through the lens of the current shrine and a few surviving objects. By investigating numerous historical sources and artistic, literary, religious, political, and ideological contexts, Gunji reveals a carefully coordinated program of visual art and rituals for the salvation of Antoku and the Taira.

Book Tony Miles It s Only Me

Download or read book Tony Miles It s Only Me written by Mike Fox and published by Batsford Books. This book was released on 2014-11-12 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The charismatic Tony Miles has been much missed since his tragic and premature death in 2001. Regarded as one of England's greatest ever chess players and analysts, he was also one of the wittiest writers on the game. By sheer force of example and ebullient peronality, he inspired the 'English chess explosion' after becoming the first UK grandmaster in the mid 70s. This Fascinating collection of over a hundred games and articles, covering Tony's entire chess career, includes his most celebrated wins, a few losses, and in addition to the famous game against Karpov with the bizarre St George's opening 1 e4 a6 - a less well known victory over the then world champion from a television tournament. All the games are annotated by Tony himself - in his own inimitable style. This fitting tribute is rounded off with a review of Tony's original opening repertoire as well as personal appreciations by his Birmingham clubmates and friends Mike Fox, Malcolm Hunt and Geoff Lawton.

Book Principles and Practices of Molecular Properties

Download or read book Principles and Practices of Molecular Properties written by Patrick Norman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive yet accessible exploration of quantum chemical methods for the determination of molecular properties of spectroscopic relevance Molecular properties can be probed both through experiment and simulation. This book bridges these two worlds, connecting the experimentalist's macroscopic view of responses of the electromagnetic field to the theoretician’s microscopic description of the molecular responses. Comprehensive in scope, it also offers conceptual illustrations of molecular response theory by means of time-dependent simulations of simple systems. This important resource in physical chemistry offers: A journey in electrodynamics from the molecular microscopic perspective to the conventional macroscopic viewpoint The construction of Hamiltonians that are appropriate for the quantum mechanical description of molecular properties Time- and frequency-domain perspectives of light–matter interactions and molecular responses of both electrons and nuclei An introduction to approximate state response theory that serves as an everyday tool for computational chemists A unified presentation of prominent molecular properties Principles and Practices of Molecular Properties: Theory, Modeling and Simulations is written by noted experts in the field. It is a guide for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and professionals in academia and industry alike, providing a set of keys to the research literature.

Book Mining in Ecologically Sensitive Landscapes

Download or read book Mining in Ecologically Sensitive Landscapes written by Mark Tibbett and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mining in Ecologically Sensitive Landscapes explores the interface between geology and botany, and mining and conservation. Many areas of unusual geology that contain ore-bearing bodies also support unique ecological communities of plants and animals. Increasing demand to exploit rich mineral deposits can lead to a conflict between mining and conservation interests in such landscapes. This book brings together experts in the field of mining and conservation to grapple with this pressing issue and to work toward a positive outcome for all. Chapters are grouped into four themes: Introduction, Concepts and Challenges; Endemism in Ironstone Geosystems; Progress in Bauxite Mining; and Ways Forward. The book focuses on natural and semi-natural ecosystems, where landscape beauty, biodiversity and conservation value are at their highest measure and the mineral wealth they contain can bring affluence of regional or even national importance. Examples of conflicts ranging from threatened floristic endemics to human ecology are included, from Africa, the Americas and Australasia. Mining in Ecologically Sensitive Landscapes is an important reference for environmental managers, NGOs, restoration ecologists, academics, undergraduate and postgraduate students of ecology and environmental studies, conservation biologists, as well as mine managers, mining environmental specialists, consultants, regulators and relevant government departments.
