Book Transport Terminals and Modal Interchanges

Download or read book Transport Terminals and Modal Interchanges written by Christopher Blow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to review a trend in transport systems which has only recently come of age: the multi-modal interchange. Separate modes of transport are being linked through 'joined-up thinking', and transport designers and authorities are only now able to exploit interchange opportunities. This book presents examples of how these new opportunities have been planned and designed, and outlines how transfer and mobility can be improved in the future. Blow takes the airport as the focal point of true multi-modal passenger terminals and presents the development of these buildings as representing a new experience in travel. The book shows that the success of the experience of transferring from one mode of transport to another depends on the many factors, including congestion in an already overloaded system, and the way that designers and managers have addressed contingency planning. International examples are drawn from areas where mobility is most concentrated and the demands on design are at their highest. The book also addresses important issues of rebuilding and redevelopment, where once separate modes of transport are being linked to each other, and where short-term inconveniences rectify past wrongs in the long term. It is a compendium of architectural and engineering achievement.

Book Greening Airports

Download or read book Greening Airports written by Milan Janić and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greening Airports considers the “greening”, i.e., more sustainable development, of the entire air transport system – airports, air traffic control, and airlines – that could be achieved by the development and implementation of advanced operations and technologies. A broad overview of the general concept is given at the start of Greening Airports, which then goes on to provide a system for monitoring and assessing the level of greening of both the air transport system and individual airports. These are followed by analysis and modelling of the potential effects of particular advanced operations and technologies on the greening of airports and their local airspace. These include: the development of a large airport into a multimodal transport node by connecting it to a high speed rail network; the use of operations supported by new and existing air traffic control technologies to increase landing capacity of existing runways; the use of liquid hydrogen as a commercial aviation fuel; and the improvement of airport ground accessibility by a light rail rapid transit system. Greening Airports is written for researchers, planners, operators and policy makers in air transport.

Book European Air Traffic Management

Download or read book European Air Traffic Management written by Andrew Cook and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European Air Traffic Management: Principles, Practice and Research is a single source of reference on the key subject areas of air traffic management in Europe. It brings together material that was previously unobtainable, hidden within technical documents or dispersed across disparate sources. With a broad cross-section of contributors from across the industry and academia, the book offers an effective treatment of the key issues in current, and developing, European ATM. It explains the principles of air traffic management and its practical workings, bridging the academic and operational worlds to give an insight into this evolving field, with a number of fresh perspectives brought to the text. On-going research and developments are closely integrated into the themes, demonstrating the likely directions of future ATM in Europe and the challenges it will face. It is anticipated that many readers will already have expertise in one or more of the chapters’ subject matter, but wish to develop a further understanding of the areas covered in others, taking advantage of the many thematic and operational links which have been illustrated. The book will appeal to both aviation academics and practitioners, equally for those whose area of expertise is outside ATM but want a clearly elucidated source of reference, as to those wishing to broaden existing knowledge.

Book Deregulation and the Airline Business in Europe

Download or read book Deregulation and the Airline Business in Europe written by Sean Barrett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost 117 million passengers flew on Europe's low cost airlines in 2006. This statistic would have seemed beyond belief in the mid-1980s when air transport was a heavily regulated sphere. This book examines the deregulation which has taken place since then and in particular looks at the single most important reprurcussion of the deregulation of Europe's skies - the rise of the low cost airline. Sean Barret has been involved in the debates surrounding this right from the start and is well placed to provide a scholarly study of the issue. The book spends much time looking at the success of Ryanair in this period - this provides the perfect case study given the dominant role that the company has taken up over recent years.
