Book High Speed Rail and Access Transit Networks

Download or read book High Speed Rail and Access Transit Networks written by Lara Rita Brunello and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-02 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the promise of High Speed Rail (HSR) technologies to win market share from carbon-intensive air transport through the strategic optimization of rail productivity and efficiency. While the positive impacts of HSR at both urban and long-distance levels are well-documented, this resource focuses on what has been a challenging area for HSR deployment historically: the integration of HSR accessibility at the regional level. The author provides tools and methods to better measure the feasibility of integrating regional HSR with existing transport networks, and includes in-depth case studies to demonstrate the contributions of expanded high speed rail access on sustainable development. Shares options for maximizing efficiency and effectiveness of high speed rail transport; Compares strategies for integrating urban, long-distance, and regional high speed rail transport; Explores new dimensions of high speed rail deployment b y linking transit networks with increased regional accessibility.

Book Mode Choice Models for Airport Access and Egress Trips

Download or read book Mode Choice Models for Airport Access and Egress Trips written by Benjamin Reibach and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Airports in major metropolitan cities attract large volumes of passenger traffic across a variety of modes including personal automobiles, rental cars, taxis, public transportation, and airport shuttles. Yet, there is relatively limited empirical research on the factors that influence the traveler's choice of mode of travel. In particular, most studies capture the influence of traveler characteristics only to a limited extent. Further, practically all studies have examined only the choice of mode for access to the airport and not the choice of mode for egress from the airport. In this context, this study develops mode-choice models for both access and egress trips for four main market segments (resident business, resident non business, non resident business, and non resident non business). Data were used from California to estimate the models. Several factors such as time-of-day, day-of-the-week of the trip, travel-party composition, number of checked bags per person, household income, whether costs are covered by the employer, duration of the long-distance trip, and the distance of the access trip were all found to impact the choice of mode.

Book A Comparative Evaluation of Air and Auto Travel Between Urban Regions quantifying Intercity Modal Accessibility

Download or read book A Comparative Evaluation of Air and Auto Travel Between Urban Regions quantifying Intercity Modal Accessibility written by Brian L. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic competitiveness of a region, in addition to the quality of life of its citizens, is dependent upon its accessibility to other regions. As the surface and air transportation systems evolve, it is important to explicitly measure the impact of transportation changes on a region0́9s accessibility. Therefore, the purpose of this research project is to develop a methodology to quantify intercity accessibility by mode, and to use this methodology to investigate the impact of air service changes in a region to its intercity accessibility.

Book The Future of Disability in America

Download or read book The Future of Disability in America written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-10-24 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of disability in America will depend on how well the U.S. prepares for and manages the demographic, fiscal, and technological developments that will unfold during the next two to three decades. Building upon two prior studies from the Institute of Medicine (the 1991 Institute of Medicine's report Disability in America and the 1997 report Enabling America), The Future of Disability in America examines both progress and concerns about continuing barriers that limit the independence, productivity, and participation in community life of people with disabilities. This book offers a comprehensive look at a wide range of issues, including the prevalence of disability across the lifespan; disability trends the role of assistive technology; barriers posed by health care and other facilities with inaccessible buildings, equipment, and information formats; the needs of young people moving from pediatric to adult health care and of adults experiencing premature aging and secondary health problems; selected issues in health care financing (e.g., risk adjusting payments to health plans, coverage of assistive technology); and the organizing and financing of disability-related research. The Future of Disability in America is an assessment of both principles and scientific evidence for disability policies and services. This book's recommendations propose steps to eliminate barriers and strengthen the evidence base for future public and private actions to reduce the impact of disability on individuals, families, and society.

Book The Geography of Transport Systems

Download or read book The Geography of Transport Systems written by Jean-Paul Rodrigue and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobility is fundamental to economic and social activities such as commuting, manufacturing, or supplying energy. Each movement has an origin, a potential set of intermediate locations, a destination, and a nature which is linked with geographical attributes. Transport systems composed of infrastructures, modes and terminals are so embedded in the socio-economic life of individuals, institutions and corporations that they are often invisible to the consumer. This is paradoxical as the perceived invisibility of transportation is derived from its efficiency. Understanding how mobility is linked with geography is main the purpose of this book. The third edition of The Geography of Transport Systems has been revised and updated to provide an overview of the spatial aspects of transportation. This text provides greater discussion of security, energy, green logistics, as well as new and updated case studies, a revised content structure, and new figures. Each chapter covers a specific conceptual dimension including networks, modes, terminals, freight transportation, urban transportation and environmental impacts. A final chapter contains core methodologies linked with transport geography such as accessibility, spatial interactions, graph theory and Geographic Information Systems for transportation (GIS-T). This book provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the field, with a broad overview of its concepts, methods, and areas of application. The accompanying website for this text contains a useful additional material, including digital maps, PowerPoint slides, databases, and links to further reading and websites. The website can be accessed at: http://people.hofstra.edu/geotrans This text is an essential resource for undergraduates studying transport geography, as well as those interest in economic and urban geography, transport planning and engineering.
