Today this pivotal event in Canada’s history is hazily remembered, yet certain interests have shaped how the tragedy is woven into public memory, and even exploited to advance a strategic national narrative. Remembering Air India insists that we “remember Air India otherwise.” This collection investigates the Air India bombing and its implications for current debates about racism, terrorism, and citizenship. Drawing together academic analysis, testimony, visual arts, and creative writing, this innovative volume tenders a new public record of the bombing, one that shows how important creative responses are for deepening our understanding of the event and its aftermath. Download or read book Secret Service written by Reg Whitaker and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-07-06 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secret Service provides the first comprehensive history of political policing in Canada – from its beginnings in the mid-nineteenth century, through two world wars and the Cold War to the more recent 'war on terror.' This book reveals the extent, focus, and politics of government-sponsored surveillance and intelligence-gathering operations. Drawing on previously classified government records, the authors reveal that for over 150 years, Canada has run spy operations largely hidden from public or parliamentary scrutiny – complete with undercover agents, secret sources, agent provocateurs, coded communications, elaborate files, and all the usual apparatus of deception and betrayal so familiar to fans of spy fiction. As they argue, what makes Canada unique among Western countries is its insistent focus of its surveillance inwards, and usually against Canadian citizens. Secret Service highlights the many tensions that arise when undercover police and their covert methods are deployed too freely in a liberal democratic society. It will prove invaluable to readers attuned to contemporary debates about policing, national security, and civil rights in a post-9/11 world.
Download or read book Promiseland written by Avinash Bagal and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2015-11-20 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Eisenhower to Obama, the country has changed. Landscapes have changed, politics have changed, cars and TV’s changed from American to Japanese and Chinese made. Buicks, Chevrolets and Chryslers were traded for Toyotas, Hondas, and Nissans. Starbucks redefined coffee and Tiger Woods owned the golf course. Yet the people haven’t changed! They have remained the same friendly, generous, football-loving crowd that sometimes gets fooled by politicians and TV priests alike, but not for long. I changed from a scared young man landing at Pier 90 in New York to a retired grandfather who somehow succeeded in planting both of his feet firmly, one in the U.S. and the other in his birthplace, India. My notion of being American also changed, from the John Wayne and Esther Williams images seen in Sunday matinees to a regular, life-loving, hard-working, family-first people who just don’t know how to give up. Even as I travelled into an ever-shrinking world, I found that America stayed with me. Here are a few stories from over half a century of work and life in the United States and beyond - some happy, some funny and a few that may draw a tear or two from you. There’s still more to come. Who knows, I may even write a sequel at 100!

Book excerpt: The novel alludes to the role on her personal life played by the unprecedented bloodshed in the entire human history during the exodus of people from the newly created Pakistan to India, which was the result of the tragic partition of the country that accompanied independence from the British rule in August 1947. Indias non-violent freedom-struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi brought to the forefront many great national leaders. Among them, Sardar Patel, hailing from the state of Gujarat and free Indias first Home Minister, was aptly called the Iron-Man of India he is credited for a courageous and tactful unification of 565 princely states into the new Indian Republic. Narendra Modi, the present-day Chief Minister of Gujarat, is depicted in this novel as kind of a reincarnation of Patel, as he conducts a campaign as one of the prime ministerial candidate for the national election to be held in 2014. Modi lays bare the British-style divide-and-rule policy, vote-bank policy, and many other scandals of corruption under the presently ruling Congress Party. This novel tells the story of Kamala enmeshed with the story of the nation at large in a fast-moving tempo and is likely to become a unique literary creation of its kind. Readers in India as well as elsewhere will find this story intriguing, moving, entertaining, and even inspiring.

Download or read book Aviation and Tourism written by Anne Graham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport is an essential element of tourism, providing the vital link between the tourist generating areas and destinations. Good accessibility, which is determined by the transport services provided, is a fundamental condition for the development of any tourist destination. Moreover the transport industry can be a major beneficiary of tourism because of the additional passenger demand that may be generated. Aviation is an increasingly important mode of transport for tourism markets. Whilst geography has meant that, in modern times, air travel has always been the dominant mode for long distance travel and much international tourism, moves towards deregulation, and in particular the emergence of the low cost carrier sector, have also increased aviation's significance for short and medium haul tourism trips. Thus developments in aviation can have very major implications for many leisure and business tourism markets. However the characteristics and needs of leisure travellers are generally so very different from business travellers that this necessitates a separate consideration of these markets if a detailed understanding of the relationship with aviation is to be gained. In spite of the obvious closeness between the aviation and tourism industries, there are very few specialist texts on this subject. Most tourism focused books consider aviation as just one component of the tourism industry which needs to be discussed, whereas aviation specialist texts rarely concentrate on just leisure travel. In addition there is very little literature that gives a detailed appreciation of the complexities and potential conflicts associated with the development of coherent and effective aviation and tourism policies. Therefore it is the aim of this book to fill this important gap which exists with a comprehensive, in-depth study of the relationship between aviation and leisure travel. The book deals exclusively with issues related to the relationship between aviation and leisure travel. It does this with an analysis of the theoretical concepts relevant to the subject area combined with a detailed investigation of current practice within the aviation and tourism industries. Each chapter is illustrated with case study material that will reinforce the understanding of the issues that are being examined.

Download or read book Asian Indians of Chicago written by Indo-American Center and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the infectious rhythm of the bhangra dance and the sizzle of the tandoori platter to landmark achievements in research laboratories and corporate boardrooms, the Asian Indian presence has very quickly become a lively and colorful part of the daily life of the Chicago metropolitan area. Arriving in Chicago in the mid 60s, the first wave of Indians were mostly professionals who intended to return home. But as they stayed on and were joined by others, their population began to reflect the tremendous ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity of India. Today, Indians are the largest Asian-American immigrant group in the Chicago area. Recognizing that first-hand resources would still be available for compiling their history, the Indo-American Center appealed to Chicago area residents of Indian origin and to their organizations to select photographs and documents from their personal collections to tell the story of the community. This book is a result of their enthusiastic response. Here, then, is a history in the making, -the record, in pictures, of the life of a diverse and vibrant community as told by the people who live it and shape its course.
Download or read book At Home in India written by Salman Khurshid and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, definitive and forceful account – by a witness to recent history in the making – which highlights the fact that Muslims do feel at home in India and also provides rare insights into their thought processes, their aspirations and their problems, As a former Union minister who has held several crucial portfolios, Salman Khurshid, on the basis of his vast and varied experience, recounts how Muslims in India accept this country as their own despite many provocations and allegations doubting their patriotism. In the process, he reinforces his contentions by providing numerous real-life examples of how the community has proved its commitment and capability by making immense contributions in almost all fields. This timely volume, which covers a wide span from the late nineteenth century to the present, brings out succinctly the pivotal roles played by a galaxy of distinguished Indian Muslims. The author describes how the Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh and the Jamia Millia Islamia (Delhi) came into being and how many of their alumni became part of the freedom movement and made sincere efforts at fostering and maintaining communal harmony. Post-Independence, Salman Khurshid emphasizes the importance of outstanding Muslim leaders who served as role models for the younger generation. The author does not shy away from hypersensitive issues such as terrorism, communal riots, a Uniform Civil Code, present-day Muslim leadership (or lack of) and the place of women in Islam, with a focus on the Shah Bano case. He underscores the significance of the ‘trust deficit’ on the part of Muslims vis-à-vis the police (based on a recent report of the directors-general of police from different states) and spotlights the July 2014 verdict of the Supreme Court with regard to the Shariat and fatwas. He rounds off the book with an analysis of what the future could hold after the recent victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Salman Khurshid tackles each and every topic with candour, sensitivity and forthrightness.
