Download or read book Radar Days written by E G. Bowen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now more than sixty years since radar began in Britain. In the intervening years, airborne radar has become one of the most important branches of civilian and military radar. In Radar Days, "the father of airborne radar," Dr. "Taffy" Bowen recounts his personal story of how the first airborne radars were built and brought into use in the Royal Air Force, and of the Tizard mission to the USA in 1940, of which he was a member. Written from the point of view of the individuals who worked at the laboratory bench, the story begins with the building of the first ground air-warning radar at Orfordness in June 1935. The book proceeds to describe how this equipment was miniaturized to make it suitable for use in aircraft and the lengthy, sometimes hazardous flight trials conducted before radar went into service with the RAF. The author also details the activities of the Tizard mission, which was instrumental in installing the first airborne radars in US aircraft. The greatest achievement of the mission was to pass on the secret of the resonant magnetron to the US only a few months after its invention at Birmingham University. This was the device that brought about a revolution in Allied radar, putting it far ahead of the corresponding German technology for the remainder of the war.

Book AGARD Flight Test Techniques Series Volume 16 Introduction to Airborne Early Warning Radar Flight Test Introduction Aux Essais en Vol Des Radars Aeroportes D Alerte Lointaine

This book was released on 1999 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During periods when military budgets and aircraft fleet sizes are shrinking, systems that serve to cost effectively increase the utility of the remaining weapons can still undergo procurement growth. The increased situational awareness and battle field management provided by Airborne Early Warning (AEW) radar is one such force multiplier. The primary role of an AEW aircraft is the long-range detection of airborne targets. As potent new airborne threats, such as low flying cruise missiles, reduce the timelines that traditional air defense systems have to react, the utility of an AEW system's long-range surveillance capabilities to recover the lost time is clear. Fundamentally, these new targets stress the principal performance capabilities of an AEW radar sensor leveling new requirements on these systems to deal with this advanced threat. These increased requirements have led to world-wide, substantive work in the development of radar upgrades to existing AEW aircraft, such as the U.S. Navy's E-2C Hawkeye and the U.S. Air Force's E-3A AWACS, as well as new systems and platforms, such as the Swedish Air Force's ERIEYE. The required increases in sensitivity, resolution, and the associated data rates that stem from these performance improvements will have profound impact on the way these systems are operated and how they perform in various environments. As these increasingly capable systems evolve, AEW radar will be expected to take on additional missions and perform other surveillance functions in the pursuit of dominant battle field awareness. Unfortunately, little or nothing has been written to document the largely unique techniques needed to perform the system level flight testing of these new AEW radars. The procedures have largely been passed from one individual to the next without the benefit of substantive documentation.

Excerpt: The Lockheed EC-121 Warning Star was a United States Navy and United States Air Force airborne early warning radar surveillance aircraft. A military version of the Lockheed Constellation, it was designed to serve as an airborne early warning system to supplement the Distant Early Warning Line, using two large radomes, a vertical dome above and a horizontal one below the fuselage. EC-121s were also used for intelligence gathering (SIGINT). It was introduced in 1954 and retired from service in 1978, although a single specially modified EW aircraft remained in service with the U.S. Navy until 1982. The US Navy versions when initially procured were designated WV-1 (PO-1W), WV-2, and WV-3. Warning Stars of the U.S. Air Force served during the Vietnam War as both electronic sensor monitors and as a forerunner to the Boeing E-3 Sentry AWACS. U.S. Air Force aircrews adopted the civil nickname, "Connie" (diminutive of Constellation) as reference, while naval aircrews used the term "Willie Victor" based on a slang version of the phonetic alphabet and the naval version of the aircraft's pre-1962 designation of WV-1, WV-2 or WV-3. The second PO-1W prototype at NAS Barbers Point in 1952. The third production WV-2 in flight in 1954.Since 1943 the Lockheed Constellation had been in USAAF service as the C-69. The use of the Constellation by the US Navy for patrol and airborne early...
