Book System Analysis and Modelling in Air Transport

Download or read book System Analysis and Modelling in Air Transport written by Milan Janić and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-01-04 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive analysis and modelling of demand, capacity, quality of services, economics, and sustainability of the air transport system and its main components - - airports, airlines, and ATC/ATM (Air Traffic Control/Management). Airports consist of the airside and landside area characterized by their capacities for handling demand such as aircraft, air passengers, and air freight/cargo shipments. Regarding spatial configuration, airlines generally operate hub-and-spoke (conventional or legacy airlines) and point-to-point (LCCs - Low Cost Carriers) air route networks. Their fleets consisting of different aircraft types provide transport capacity for serving demand including air passengers and freight/cargo shipments. The ATC/ATM includes the controlled airspace, traffic management and control facilities and equipment on the ground, space, and on board aircraft, and the ATC Controllers). They all provide capacity to handle demand consisting of the flights between origin and destination airports carried out by airline aircraft. The outcome from the interrelationships between demand and capacity at these components materializes as the quality of services. At airports and airlines this is generally expressed by congestion and delays of aircraft, air passengers, and freight/cargo shipments. At ATC/ATM, this is expressed by delays, horizontal and vertical in-efficiency, and safety of flights. Economics of each component relate to its revenues, costs, and profits from handling demand, i.e., providing services of given quality. The sustainability of air transport system has become increasingly important issue for many internal and external actors/stakeholders involved to deal with. This has implied increasing the system’s overall social-economic effects/benefits while reducing or maintaining constant impacts/costs on the environment and society at both global and regional/local scale under conditions of continuous medium- to long term growth.

Book Securing the Future of U S Air Transportation

Download or read book Securing the Future of U S Air Transportation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-12-18 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As recently as the summer of 2001, many travelers were dreading air transportation because of extensive delays associated with undercapacity of the system. That all changed on 9/11, and demand for air transportation has not yet returned to peak levels. Most U.S. airlines continue to struggle for survival, and some have filed for bankruptcy. The situation makes it difficult to argue that strong action is urgently needed to avert a crisis of undercapacity in the air transportation system. This report assesses the visions and goals for U.S. civil aviation and technology goals for the year 2050.

Book Air Route Networks Through Complex Networks Theory

Download or read book Air Route Networks Through Complex Networks Theory written by Jose M. Sallan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air Route Networks through Complex Networks Theory connects theory research with network connectivity analysis, providing practitioners with the tools they need to develop more efficient, resilient and profitable air route networks. The book helps airline route planners and executives create more robust route networks that are less vulnerable to disruptions, such as node isolation. The book further explores errors and attacks in complex networks, strategies for detecting critical nodes and cascading failure models to assess and maximize robustness. The book explains how to measure air route network connectivity with complex network representations. Air transport is among the most dynamic and toughest competition industries in today's global economy. The quality of air route network design is a key strategic factor in an airline's viability. These robust networks provide for more stable and secure carrier operations vs. those based simply on existing supply and demand volumes. Node-specific and network-specific representations are covered, along with in-depth coverage of connectivity in special and temporal networks. These collective tools serve as a guide for practitioners seeking to apply complex network theory to the airline industry. - Presents complex networks theory research results applied to airline transportation networks - Examines airline network robustness in the face of disruptions, providing strategies for detecting critical nodes of air transport networks - Provides historical perspective on the economic, political, technical, and geographical constraints that influence airline route portfolios - Connects data from valuable tools, such as navpoints, area control centers (ACC), and flight information centers, with air network modeling - Studies spreading-related phenomena, such as rumors, and disease contagions, and how these affect the airline industry

Book Transport Systems

Download or read book Transport Systems written by Milan Janic and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transport sector consists of different modes of transport, each serving a growing demand for transporting people and goods. This (growing) demand on the one hand, needs expanding the systems’ capacity, and on the other hand, increasing the corresponding economic efficiency, effectiveness, and environmental and social friendliness. This implies development of a ‘greener’, i.e. a more sustainable transport sector. The book describes the current and prospective state of the art analytical modelling, conceptual planning, and multi-criteria evaluation of the selected cases of transport systems operated by different transport modes such as road, rail, sea, air, and intermodal. As such, the book is unique in addressing these three important aspects of dealing with transport systems before implementation of their particular components means by the selected cases. It will be particularly useful for readers from the academia and the professionals from the transport sector.
