Excerpt: The United States airspace system's classification scheme is to provide maximum pilot flexibility with acceptable levels of risk appropriate to the type of operation and traffic density within that class of airspace - in particular to provide separation and active control in areas of dense or high-speed flight operations. The Albert ROPER (1919-10-13 The Paris Convention) implementation of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) airspace classes defines Classes A through E and Class G. Class F is not used in the United States. The other U.S. implementations are described below. The United States also defines categories of airspace that may overlap with classes of airspace. Classes of airspace are mutually exclusive. Thus, airspace can be Class E and Restricted at the same time, but it cannot be both Class E and Class B at the same location and at the same time. Note: All airspace classes except Class G require air traffic control (ATC)...

This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In support of its mission, FAA relies on the NAS-one of the nation's critical infrastructures-which is comprised of air traffic control systems, procedures, facilities, aircraft, and people who operate and maintain them. Given the critical role of the NAS and the increasing connectivity of FAA's systems, it is essential that the agency implement effective information security controls to protect its air traffic control systems from internal and external threats. GAO was asked to review FAA's information security program. Specifically, the objective of this review was to evaluate the extent to which FAA had effectively implemented information security controls to protect its air traffic control systems. To do this, GAO reviewed FAA policies, procedures, and practices and compared them to the relevant federal law and guidance; assessed the implementation of security controls over FAA systems; and interviewed officials. This is a public version of a report containing sensitive security information. Information deemed sensitive has been redacted.

Book The Future of Air Traffic Control

Download or read book The Future of Air Traffic Control written by Panel on Human Factors in Air Traffic Control Automation and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-02-09 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automation in air traffic control may increase efficiency, but it also raises questions about adequate human control over automated systems. Following on the panel's first volume on air traffic control automation, Flight to the Future (NRC, 1997), this book focuses on the interaction of pilots and air traffic controllers, with a growing network of automated functions in the airspace system. The panel offers recommendations for development of human-centered automation, addressing key areas such as providing levels of automation that are appropriate to levels of risk, examining procedures for recovery from emergencies, free flight versus ground-based authority, and more. The book explores ways in which technology can build on human strengths and compensate for human vulnerabilities, minimizing both mistrust of automation and complacency about its abilities. The panel presents an overview of emerging technologies and trends toward automation within the national airspace system--in areas such as global positioning and other aspects of surveillance, flight information provided to pilots an controllers, collision avoidance, strategic long-term planning, and systems for training and maintenance. The book examines how to achieve better integration of research and development, including the importance of user involvement in air traffic control. It also discusses how to harmonize the wide range of functions in the national airspace system, with a detailed review of the free flight initiative.
