Book To Fill the Skies with Pilots

Download or read book To Fill the Skies with Pilots written by Dominick A. Pisano and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Launched in 1939, the Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP) was one of the largest government-sponsored vocational education programs of its time. In To Fill the Skies with Pilots, Dominick A. Pisano explores the successes and failures of the program, from its conception as a hybrid civilian-military mandate in peacetime, through the war years, and into the immediate postwar period. As originally conceived, the CPTP would serve both war-preparedness goals and New Deal economic ends. Using the facilities of colleges, universities, and commercial flying schools, the CPTP was designed to provide a pool of civilian pilots for military service in the event of war. The program also sought to give an economic boost to the light-plane industry and the network of small airports and support services associated with civilian aviation. As Pisano demonstrates, the CPTP's multiple objectives ultimately contributed to its demise. Although the program did train tens of thousands of pilots who later flew during the war (mostly in noncombat missions), military leaders faulted the project for not being more in line with specific recruitment and training needs. After attempting to adjust to these needs, the CPTP then faced a difficult and ultimately unsuccessful transition back to civilian purposes in the postwar era. By charting the history of the CPTP, Pisano sheds new light on the politics of aviation during these pivotal years as well as on civil-military relations and New Deal policy making.

Book British and American News Maps in the Early Cold War Period 1945 1955

Download or read book British and American News Maps in the Early Cold War Period 1945 1955 written by Jeffrey P. Stone and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early years of the Cold War, England and the United States both found themselves reassessing their relationship with their former ally the Soviet Union, and the status of their own “special relationship” was far from certain. As Jeffrey P. Stone argues, maps from British and American news journals from this period became a valuable tool for relating the new realities of the Cold War to millions of readers. These maps were vehicles for political ideology, revealing both obvious and subtle differences in how each country viewed global geopolitics at the onset of the Cold War. Richly illustrated with news maps, cartographic advertisements, and cartoons from the era, this book reveals the idiomatic political, cultural, and material differences contributing to these divergent cartographic visions of the Cold War world.

Download or read book At Home and Abroad written by Elizabeth Shakman Hurd and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From right to left, notions of religion and religious freedom are fundamental to how many Americans have understood their country and themselves. Ideas of religion, politics, and the interplay between them are no less crucial to how the United States has engaged with the world beyond its borders. Yet scholarship on American religion tends to bracket the domestic and foreign, despite the fact that assumptions about the differences between ourselves and others deeply shape American religious categories and identities. At Home and Abroad bridges the divide in the study of American religion, law, and politics between domestic and international, bringing together diverse and distinguished authors from religious studies, law, American studies, sociology, history, and political science to explore interrelations across conceptual and political boundaries. They bring into sharp focus the ideas, people, and institutions that provide links between domestic and foreign religious politics and policies. Contributors break down the categories of domestic and foreign and inquire into how these taxonomies are related to other axes of discrimination, asking questions such as: What and who counts as “home” or “abroad,” how and by whom are these determinations made, and with what consequences? Offering a new approach to theorizing the politics of religion in the context of the American nation-state, At Home and Abroad also interrogates American religious exceptionalism and illuminates imperial dynamics beyond the United States.
