Book Understanding HIV and STI Prevention for College Students

Download or read book Understanding HIV and STI Prevention for College Students written by Leo Wilton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, young people aged 18 to 25 are at a significant risk for acquiring and transmitting HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and other STIs (sexually transmitted infections). Primary developmental processes that place college students particularly at risk include the experience of intimacy, sexual desires and the centrality of the peer group. During these routine developmental processes, college students experiment with unprotected sex, multiple sex partners and alcohol and illicit drugs, all of which are contributing risk factors for HIV/STI infections. Early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of HIV and other STIs is germane to promoting the sexual health of college students and reducing high HIV/STI infection rates among young people. This edited volume will provide innovative and cutting-edge approaches to prevention for college students and will have a major impact on advancing the interdisciplinary fields of higher education and public health. It will explore core ideas such as hooking up culture, sexual violence, LGBT and students of color, as well as HIV and STI prevention in community colleges, rural colleges and minority serving institutions.

Download or read book Sexuality in Emerging Adulthood written by Elizabeth M. Morgan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexuality in Emerging Adulthood provides a comprehensive overview of sexuality at the stage straddling adolescence and adulthood. The first section of the volume offers conceptualizations and foundational perspectives on sexuality in emerging adulthood, with topics including theory, developmental considerations, sexual behavior, sexual beliefs and attitudes, associations with romance, casual sex, and sexual orientation. The second section systematically examines contexts and socializing agents of sexual development, including parents, peers, media, and religion. The third section narrows in on the overarching theme of the series by addressing factors leading to flourishing and floundering in the area of sexuality during emerging adulthood, such as effects of early adversity, sexual health, sexual well-being, sexuality and mental health, and sexual assault. Accompanying seven of the chapters in the volume are brief scientific reports offering new related research. The volume also contains four method tutorials that discuss topics in sex research such as ethical considerations, recruitment and incentive strategies, and identity-affirming methods. Concluding with innovative new perspectives on the integration of sexual health promotion and sexual violence prevention, this volume is crucial reading for academic scholars and those working with and supporting emerging adults.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive and accessible approach to personality theory and research with a renewed focus on contemporary findings In the newly revised 15th edition of Personality: Theory and Research, a team of distinguished researchers delivers balanced and up-to-date coverage of the major theories of personality and the latest psychological research on the subject. The book offers consistent theory-by-theory discussions of personality structures, processes, and development and provides readers with a foundation to compare and relate each theory to the others. New case simulations bridge the gap between theory and practice and a unique package of textbook features enables students to develop their critical thinking skills as they evaluate theories and research and consider their relevance to practical applications. The authors present thorough historical coverage of the development of personality research throughout the decades without omitting comprehensive analyses of contemporary research findings. Readers will also find: Expanded coverage of the interplay between personality and culture, in which modern research findings challenge assumptions contained in 20th-century personality theories New content on the biological foundations of personality A brand-new modular format that offers instructors flexibility to cover personality theories in an order of their choosing Novel case simulations that deepen student understanding of theoretical concepts and enable them to relate principles of personality science to everyday life An essential text for undergraduate and advanced students of psychology and related fields, Personality: Theory and Research is also ideal for psychology professionals, researchers, and practitioners.

Book excerpt: (Uncorrected OCR) Abstract of thesis entitled Psychosocial correlates in adolescent AIDS prevention: The case of condom use. submitted by Sze Mei Lun, Angela for the degree of Master of Social Sciences (Clinical Psychology) at the University of Hong Kong in August 1994 This study attempted to identify the significant predictors of the intention of condom use in male adolescents Specifically, a set of factors, namely the perceived risk for AIDS, the perceived barriers, benefits and self-efficacy of condom use, and the personality trait of sensation seeking, were investigated. These factors were integrated into a hypothesized patli model, based on the framework of the AIDS Risk Reduction Model. The present study also explored the differences between those with and without sexual experience (Experienced and Non-experienced respectively) in these predictors The results showed that among all subjects, the perceived barriers and self-efficacy of condom use, whether the subject had had past sexual experience, the trail of sensation seeking, and the control variable of sexual self-disclosure were significant in accounting for 18.06% of the variance in the intention of condom use. Although different sets of significant predictors were found between the Experienced and Non-experienced groups, the perceived self-efficacy accounted for a significant portion of the intention in intention of condom use in both subject groups. With regard to the hypothesized path model, only partial support was obtained, suggesting room for modification. Implications of these findings on the planning and implementation of AIDS prevention programs, specifically on the importance of enhancing the adolescents' sense of self-efficacy in condom use, were discussed.

Book Factors Related to Condom Use Among Sexually Active African American Females Using Health Belief Model Constructs and Potential Cues to Action with a Mass Communication interpersonal Communication Approach

Download or read book Factors Related to Condom Use Among Sexually Active African American Females Using Health Belief Model Constructs and Potential Cues to Action with a Mass Communication interpersonal Communication Approach written by Shiree Monika Southerland and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to assess the factors that relate to male condom utilization among sexually active African American college women at The University of Tennessee. College women between the ages of 18 to 24 are the most susceptible to contracting a sexually transmitted disease (STD) as they do not perceive themselves to beat risk. It is estimated that each year 12 million new cases of STDs occur and two thirds of those infected are under the age of 25 (Hale & Trumbetta, 1996). Women are among the fastest growing groups being infected with HIV. In 1997, 22% of all reported new cases of AIDS were women and of those 60% were African American. African American women of all ages were approximately 16 times more likely to be diagnosed with HIV than their White counterparts (Wingood & DiClemente, 1998). This study consisted of a convenience sample of 196 African American undergraduate females between the ages of 18 to 24. Participants were recruited through various student organizations affiliated with the Black Cultural Center. The Health Belief Model (HBM) Constructs perceived susceptibility, partner, perceived barriers, turnoffs, hassles, execution relationship concerns, self-efficacy, and cues to action were found to be positively correlated with condom use. There was no correlation between HIV/AIDS level of knowledge, perceived benefits, and perceived susceptibility, self and condom use. A stepwise regression was performed in order to ascertain whether or not the HBM constructs would predict the utilization of male condoms among African American college students. The results indicated that 22% of the variance in condom use could be attributed to the HBM constructs. The strongest predictor of condom use was self-efficacy (beta=.257) and perceived barriers, turnoffs (beta=.232).
