Book excerpt: Radiative Energy Transfer presents the proceedings of the symposium on interdisciplinary aspects of radiative energy transfer held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 24-26, 1966. The book includes topics on the two main classical directions of radiative transfer: diagnostic techniques and energy exchanges. The text also covers topics on molecular band models, inversion techniques, scattering problems, and shock-wave structure. Topics on high-speed shocks, stellar atmospheres, and meteorology are also encompassed.

Download or read book Behavioral Health and Human Interactions in Space written by Nick Kanas and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-02 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook covers the range of psychological and interpersonal issues that can affect astronauts living and working in space. It deals with the three major risk areas cited by NASA’s Behavioral Health and Performance Element: Behavioral Medicine, Team Risk, and Sleep Risk. Based on the author’s more than 50 years of experience in space-related activities writing, conducting research, and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, the book follows a comprehensive range of topics that include: cognitive effects; psychiatric issues; cultural influences; salutogenic and positive aspects of space travel; autonomy and delayed communication; current plans to return to the Moon and Mars; analysis of study environments such as the polar regions, submersible habitats, and space simulation facilities; and more. It draws on research, literature, and case studies from the 1950s onward, showing readers in a natural and accessible way how the field has progressed over time. The book contains ample end-of-chapter summaries and exercises as well as a complete glossary of key terms. As such, it will serve students taking courses in aerospace psychology, psychiatry, sociology, human factors, medicine, and related social sciences, in addition to space industry professionals and others interested in the complexities of people living and working in space.
Download or read book The International Atlas of Mars Exploration Volume 1 1953 to 2003 written by Philip J. Stooke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-24 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the first five decades of the exploration of Mars, this atlas is the most detailed visual reference available. It brings together, for the first time, a wealth of information from diverse sources, featuring annotated maps, photographs, tables and detailed descriptions of every Mars mission in chronological order, from the dawn of the space age to Mars Express. Special attention is given to landing site selection, including reference to some missions that were planned but never flew. Phobos and Deimos, the tiny moons of Mars, are covered in a separate section. Contemporary maps reveal our improving knowledge of the planet's surface through the latter half of the twentieth century. Written in non-technical language, this atlas is a unique resource for anyone interested in planetary sciences, the history of space exploration and cartography, while the detailed bibliography and chart data are especially useful for academic researchers and students.
Download or read book Hubertus Strughold written by Mark Campbell and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2013 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Hubertus Strughold was an early pioneer of aerospace medicine. He was the Director of the Aeromedical Research Institute of the German Air Ministry in Berlin during World War II. After the war, he was brought to the U.S. as a part of "Operation Paperclip" and was instrumental in the early development of space medicine. His contributions were so fundamental that he is called "The Father of Space Medicine" and the Hubertus Strughold Award is given yearly by the Space Medicine Association for individual achievement in space medicine. Following his death, criticism of his possible involvement in World War II atrocities has emerged and most of his honors have been removed. This book is a detailed and well referenced biography of Dr. Strughold. The details concerning the controversy of his activities in World War II are covered comprehensively for the first time. "We knew only a small part, and remained silent. We know more now and this along with the consciousness: if we would have known it, we would have also been silent." Existential philosopher K. Jaspers, Heidelberg 1947
