Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Biophysical provides a broad overview of agriculture and natural resource management (NRM) scholarship and practice that lies beyond the biophysical, emphasizing instead epistemological, cultural, and political foundations of NRM. The volume is oriented toward professionals with expertise in agriculture and natural resource management scholarship and practice, but who lack exposure to the conceptual and methodological underpinnings of critical theory, the anthropology of development, ecological anthropology, and other relevant scholarship. It therefore follows common standards of academic rigour, but minimizes the use of jargon, integrates detailed case studies with conceptual syntheses, and attempts to move from critique to concrete recommendations for scholarship and practice. The volume seeks to foster a more nuanced and responsible engagement with local communities and the natural world among NRM scholars and practitioners.

Book Agrarian Science for Sustainable Resource Management in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Agrarian Science for Sustainable Resource Management in Sub Saharan Africa written by George Ouma and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The livelihood of the world's population depends mostly on natural resources: land, forest, water and the air we breath. The continual degradation and diminution of these resources due to the cultivation of land threatens the economic and social security of individuals, communities and countries as well as the intricate web of ecological, social, economic and cultural relations that bind the global community together. To be productive, our resources must be managed properly, enriched and harvested responsibly.

Book Development and Agroforestry

Download or read book Development and Agroforestry written by Steven Franzel and published by Development in Practice Reader. This book was released on 2002 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines agroforestry development projects around the globe, addressing the question of how local, small-scale development successes can be "scaled up" to create wider, long-term benefits. Contributors discuss the relationship between theory and practice, the role of research in development, constraints on "scaling up" local successes, human motivation for risk-taking and learning, and how individuals and communities respond to technical innovation. The authors convey their own passionate commitment to the small and often marginal farmers with whom they work, and stress the importance of experimenting with a range of possible agroforestry techniques and approaches to monitoring and evaluation, in conjunction with the farming communities who will adopt or reject these methods over time.

Book Scale Governance and Change in Zambezi Teak Forests

Download or read book Scale Governance and Change in Zambezi Teak Forests written by Michael Musgrave and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Zambezi Teak forests of western Zambia have been exploited for their timber for over 80 years. The record of this exploitation and the subsequent collapse of the timber industry provide a unique insight into problems around land use change, governance and the interaction between ecology, society and forest management in south-central Africa. A wide-ranging study, this book is as much an examination of methodology for sustainability research as it is a review of land use change, forest management and rural livelihoods. It explores the problem of scale and how using explicit considerations of scale may contribute to an integration between the life sciences and the social sciences that a holistic assessment of sustainable development problems demands. Specific details of land use change in the region are examined over a 30 year period, including the first detailed mapping of changes to the Zambezi Teak forests since logging ceased in the early 1970s. Forest management practices and fire emerge as important drivers of land use change, and the book provides examples of how forest management and governance are important to sustainable development in this sparsely populated and inaccessible region. For readers interested a detailed understanding of the problems of deforestation, land use change and governance in the dry forests of Africa, this book is essential reading. It also provides insights into wider questions of how multidisciplinary studies may be integrated in a holistic synthesis. African dry forests have been widely studied, but few publications examine the problems of land use change and deforestation in this level of detail. The author draws on 20 years of experience in south-central Africa to combine historical records with research on current political, social and governance issues. The result is a landmark publication which covers a depth and breadth that is seldom achieved in studies of African sustainable development.

Book Agroforestry Parklands in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Agroforestry Parklands in Sub Saharan Africa written by Jean-Marc Boffa and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document attempts to present the current state of knowledge on agroforestry parkland systems. These systems, which for many local populations are very important for food security, income generation and environmental protection, are found primarily in the semi-arid and sub-humid zones of West Africa. The document first provides a thorough description of their distribution and diversity and discusses different ways of classifying them. It also presents data on current trends in parkland development and assesses determining factors. The document then provides an in-depth analysis of biophysical tree-soil-crop interactions and the factors regulating them, and describes various improved parkland management techniques. It goes on to examine the strength and limitations of institutional arrangements as well as the constraints imposed by Sahelian forest policies on the sustainable management of parklands. The production, use and marketing of parkland products is reviewed with an emphasis on their contribution to food security, local and national income as well as social values. Overall costs and benefits of the practice of parkland agroforestry are evaluated. In conclusion, the document identifies crucial research needs and promising avenues for promoting sustainable management of parkland systems.
