This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Agricultural Geology for the Schools of Kansas The preparation of this little work, has been undertaken at the very urgent solicitation of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and at that of other prominent educational workers. Two objects have been held in view: First: To place in the hands of teachers a book which would enable them to meet the requirements for the "A" certificate, as given in Article VI, Section 6, of the Session-laws of 1876, which requires, among other things, that the applicant shall be familiar with "the elements of geology, so far as relates to the manner of formation of soils and their adaptation to purposes of production." Second: To arrange the work for use in the instruction of the more advanced pupils of the common schools. To the latter end, it has seemed best to keep the book entirely simple and untechnical in its character and language. Common names are therefore preferred to technical terms, and the latter, as a rule, are only used parenthetically. Book Elements of Agricultural Chemistry and Geology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of Agricultural Chemistry and Geology Classic Reprint written by Jas; F. W. Johnston and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Agricultural Chemistry and Geology In England, and on the continent of Europe, it has been long understood among the class who own the soil, and cultivate it by the sweat of the brow of other men, and not their personal labor, that success in husbandry must depend upon giving to the soil, in some form, what is annually taken away in cultivated crops. In America, in the older States, the same truth is at length reluctantly admitted. The census tables have shown that the wheat crop of New York, in some counties, has fallen in its average product so low as eight bushels to the acre, where formerly from thirty to forty were produced. Lands deemed inexhaustible have been cropped almost to barrenness. Large sections of territory in Virginia, formerly very productive, by a course of culture not guided by a correct knowledge of the science of Husbandry, have become utterly unproductive, and been abandoned by the original cultivators. A succession of tobacco crops raised by shoal plowing without artificial manuring, or a proper rotation with other products, exhausted the surface soil, and compelled the proprietors to seek fresh fields. Book Relations of Geology to Agriculture in North Eastern America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Relations of Geology to Agriculture in North Eastern America Classic Reprint written by James Finley Weir Johnston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Relations of Geology to Agriculture in North-Eastern America Of course, among the vast number of beds of varied thickness which come to the surface in different parts of this large area, there are many to which the above general description will not apply - some which contain more clay and form stiffer soils and some which, though green or gray internally, weather of a red colour, and form reddish soils: but lightness in texture and in colour forms the distinguishing characteristic of the soils of the whole formation. The generalization drawn from this single fact, therefore, gives us already a clear idea of the prevailing physical character of the soils over a large portion of the pro vince, and illustrates the nature of the broad views which make the possession of geological maps so valuable to the student of general agriculture. Book The Elements of Agricultural Geology

Download or read book The Elements of Agricultural Geology written by Primrose McConnell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Agricultural Geology: A Scientific Aid to Practical Farming While many writers have thus been laid under contri hutien, as is shown by the footnotes, the more important sections of the volume can be claimed as the result of the author's own investigations, carried on for a great number of years. The method he followed was to procure the sheets of the Geological Survey maps for any district to be studied over or even passed through, and to cut them into small squares and paste them on the leaves of notebooks. With these in his pocket, he has worked over hundreds of farms in various parts of the United Kingdom, watched and noted the various kinds of farming passed on railway journeys or on drives, and collected samples of soil for examination where the maps indicated typical surface deposits. All the information so gathered has been sifted and arranged in the light of his own lifelong practical experience. For the last twenty years he has been farming on the London clay in Essex, and this volume has been prepared in the intervals of leisure in the management of a large holding of mixed husbandry - in the winter evenings, on wet or stormy days, in the summer mornings between sunrise and the beginning of the day's work, and so on the preparation of the manuscript taking ten years in its accomplishment. It is now presented to the public who are interested in scientific farming, as an honest endeavour to help on the development of the most ancient and the most important of all human occupations - agriculture. Book Report on the Geology and Agriculture

Download or read book Report on the Geology and Agriculture written by Eug; W. Hilgard and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Geology and Agriculture: Of the State of Mississippi The Report on the Geology and Agriculture of Mississippi herewith presented to the public, and more especially, to the people of Mississippi, is intended to embrace the observations and results heretofore obtained in connection with the Geological and Agricultural Survey of the State, so far as they are complete in themselves, or calculated to impart useful information, either practical or scientific, as to the natural character and resources of the State. There exists a great diversity of opinion, both among professional men and the public generally, as to what ought to be the character and extent of the investigations connected with State Surveys of this kind; nor can this be surprising in view of the fact, that the execution of such works under the auspices of State governments, has only been inaugurated at quite a recent date, since the rapid progress of industrial pursuits by the aid of science, has rendered the claim of those depending more immediately upon the natural resources of the land, to similar assistance, too clear and pressing to be longer disregarded. At first, these Surveys contemplated mainly the development of the mineral resources of the countries to be examined; but the obvious importance of a simultaneous observation of the prospects offered to other pursuits, has gradually so expanded the sphere of investigation, that its limits, as well as the principal and primary subjects of investigation are now generally determined chiefly by the pecuniary means provided for the purpose, in connection with the natural conditions and first necessities of the regions to be explored. Book The Geology of Soils and Substrata

Download or read book The Geology of Soils and Substrata written by Horace B. Woodward and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of Soils and Substrata: With Special Reference to Agriculture, Estates, and Sanitation The object of the present volume on soils and substrata is to provide such information relating to the land-surface as will be useful to students and teachers of agriculture, to those occupied in the management of estates and farms, or in sanitary and engineering works, wherein it is im portant to consider the geological nature of different sites for residences and other purposes. The subject is dealt with from a practical point of View. Under the term soils are included the subsoils and surface soils, the term substrata' being, for the sake of convenience, applied to the igneous as well as to the various sedi mentary and metamorphic formations, from which the mineral constituents of the soils are directly or indirectly derived. Prominence is therefore given to the chief mineral and lithological characters of the formations and to their economic products, little being said about their method of origin, and less about their life-history. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Geology and Agriculture of the State of Mississippi, 1860 It is very commonly and cheaply charged upon professional men generally, and upon those cultivating the exact sciences in partic ular, that they have a perverse disposition to wrap up everything known in an unintelligible, technical jargon, or big words, as they are currently termed. It is expected of them that they should develop new ideas (such as always result from the special study of any subject), but that they should use no new terms in expressing or communicating them which is simply impossible. N 0 one can expect to be taught, without learning let him catch the idea, and it will matter little to him whether the word expressing the same be Greek, Latin, or Chinese; English terms, already possessing definite meaning, cannot be used to express new ideas. If he cannot take the time, or trouble, to learn the idea, he ought not to complain if he cannot understand the term.
