In 1895 the Atlas Creamery Company was organized. 'in 1917 its share capital amounted to shares of $25 each being held by 100 individuals. Dividends on shares limited to 6 per cent annually were considered as interest on capital invested. The association was reorganized in 1920 and its name changed to the Atlas Cooperative Creamery Company. Since 1921 the creamery has been turning out more than pounds of butter each season. The figures for the last three years are, 1924, pounds; 1925, pounds; 1926, pounds. Pa trons have received from 86 to 91 per cent of total sales. In the same period 12 associations have been dissolved and 32 others have been removed from the list as they have gone out of business. The Cooperation and Markets Branch has given considerable attention to assisting poultry producers. Field men have been teaching the people how to cull their own flocks. After instructions and demonstrations the owners are encouraged to handle their own birds and some will be able to do the work for themselves next year. In all, 768 flocks were culled, a total of birds; the total number of culls was an average of hens culled out. Turkey raising has also been aided, a special feature being to as sist the farmers to produce the types needed to meet market demands. Let me say at once that I feel no ambition and claim no competence for such a task. Judged by that standard this book has no value. Let me disarm the critic by saying with all the clearness I can command that I do not regard co-operation as a panacea for all ills; I am not disposed to fear the dissolution of the universe if the co-operative commonwealth delays its coming a few more years, nor to expect the millennium if the contrary take place. I seek merely to contribute one small stone to the building by setting before English readers what I have learned in practice of the benefits of co-operation in agriculture and the means of increasing those benefits.
