La tecnica utilizzata per l'analisi dei dati è la Grounded Theory, che permette di procedere alla concettualizzazione sistematica dalle evidenze raccolte; il problema di ricerca è ”modellizzato” attraverso una code map che tiene conto delle interazioni emerse.The interactions among Italian farmers and large-scale retailers affect food innovation proliferation and effectiveness, in particular as regards leaf products. The effects that innovation may generate do not disclose whether the innovation content is not rightly conveyed to the consumer. The Grounded Theory approach allows to achieve the systematic conceptualization of the evidences; the research problem is "modeled" through a code map that takes into account the relationships among the crucial categories.

By using the Grounded Theory Methodology, the research intends to generate theory through the description and understanding of processes, while maintaining a considerable degree of flexibility. The paper shows that innovation may change some of the distribution channel orders, but that the structural constraints of the supply chain in certain circumstances may act by inhibiting these changes, sometimes to the point of influencing the outcome of the innovation process.
