Book Transforming Agriculture in Southern Africa

Download or read book Transforming Agriculture in Southern Africa written by Richard A. Sikora and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a synthesis of the key issues and challenges facing agriculture and food production in Southern Africa. Southern Africa is facing numerous challenges from diverse issues such as agricultural transformations, growing populations, urbanization and climate change. These challenges place great pressure on food security, agriculture, water availability and other natural resources, as well as impacting biodiversity. Drawing on case studies from Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, the chapters in this book consider these challenges from an interdisciplinary perspective, covering key areas in constraints to production, the most important building blocks of good farming practices, and established and emerging technologies. This book will be a valuable support for informing new policies and processes aimed at improving food production and security and developing sustainable agriculture in Southern Africa. This informative volume will be key reading for those interested in agricultural science, African studies, rural studies, development studies and sustainability. It will also be a valuable resource for policymakers, governmental and nongovernmental organizations, and agricultural practitioners. Book Rural Development and the Construction of New Markets

Download or read book Rural Development and the Construction of New Markets written by Paul Hebinck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on empirical experiences related to market development, and specifically new markets with structurally different characteristics than mainstream markets. Europe, Brazil, China and the rather robust and complex African experiences are covered to provide a rich multidisciplinary and multi-level analysis of the dynamics of newly emerging markets. Rural Development and the Construction of New Markets analyses newly constructed markets as nested markets. Although they are specific market segments that are nested in the wider commodity markets for food, they have a different nature, different dynamics, a different redistribution of value added, different prices and different relations between producers and consumers. Nested markets embody distinction viz-a-viz the general markets in which they are embedded. A key aspect of nested markets is that these are constructed in and through social struggles, which in turn positions this book in relation to classic and new institutional economic analyses of markets. These markets emerge as steadily growing parts of the farmer populations are dedicating their time, energy and resources to the design and production of new goods and services that differ from conventional agricultural outputs. The speed and intensity with which this is taking place, and the products and services involved, vary considerably across the world. In large parts of the South, notably Africa, farmers are ‘structurally’ combining farming with other activities. By contrast, in Europe and large parts of Latin America farmers have taken steps to generate new products and services which exist alongside ongoing agricultural production. This book not only discusses the economic rationales and dynamics for these markets, but also their likely futures and the threats and opportunities they face.

Book Unlocking markets to smallholders

Download or read book Unlocking markets to smallholders written by Herman D. van Schalkwyk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-10 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the institutional, technical and market constraints as well as opportunities for smallholders, notably, emerging farmers in disadvantaged areas such as the former homelands of South Africa. Emerging farmers are previously disadvantaged black people who started or will start their business with the support of special government programs. Public support programs have been developed as part of the Black Economic Empowerment strategy of the South African government. These programs aim to improve the performance of emerging farmers. This requires, first and foremost, upgrading the emerging farmers skills by providing access to knowledge about agricultural and entrepreneurial practices. To become or to remain good farmers they also need access to suitable agricultural land and sufficient water for irrigation and for feeding their cattle. Finally, for emerging farmers to be engaged in viable farming operations, various factors need to be in place such as marketing and service institutions to give credit for agricultural inputs and investments; input markets for farm machinery, farm implements, fertilizers and quality seeds; and accessible output markets for their end products. This book develops a policy framework and potential institutional responses to unlock the relevant markets for smallholders.

Book The Decline of the South African Economy

Download or read book The Decline of the South African Economy written by Stuart Jones and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Africa's leading economists adopt within this volume a sectoral approach in their analysis of the drastic changes that have occurred within the South African economy since 1970. The book illustrates how, despite its sophisticated infrastructure, the South African economy has shared in the economic decline - resulting from misguided economic policies - that has been the experience of Sub-Saharan Africa. The contributors argue that the failure of manufacturing to maintain the country's economic growth, once the output of the gold mines began to decline, is central to an understanding of events and outcomes in the economy. Government policy towards manufacturing has played a major part in the decline of the South African economy, but this has, however, tended to be overlooked as a result of the turbulence generated by the political events unfolding in South Africa.

Book Agricultural Policy

Download or read book Agricultural Policy written by Vítor João Pereira Domingues Martinho and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives insights into the agricultural policies in several countries located in different continents. It is of interest to students, researchers, and policy and decision makers. Given the particularities of agriculture, agricultural policies are indispensable for an adjusted development of farms according to the strategic objectives of each country, namely the socio-economic and environmental ones. The question that often arises is whether the practical effects of the various policy measures are in accordance with their design and what is the effect of these policy instruments among many other causes of structural and technological change. The aim of this book is to describe the main agricultural policies that have been implemented in countries such as the United States of America, Brazil, China, India, South Africa, Australia, as well as the European Union. It also aims to analyse the real impact of these policies on the structural and technological changes of farms in the European Union. As its methodology, the book considers bibliometric analysis, literature review and statistical approaches.

Book The Challenge of Change

Download or read book The Challenge of Change written by Lieb Nieuwoudt and published by University of Kwazulu Natal Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collective effort by leading South African researchers in agricultural economics. The book reviews policies and challenges in the agricultural economy which aim to promote equitable participation and transformation for a better future. South Africa is faced with urgent challenges: inequality has to be replaced with equity; poverty needs to be substantially reduced; living standards need to be improved; and growth needs to be maintained while keeping production internationally competitive. The agricultural sector has a crucial role to play in the process of achieving growth with equity. This book examines: structure and production in agriculture; income and employment growth in rural areas, including land distribution; agricultural marketing; water usage and food security; international trade and agricultural finance; research and development policy; and trade patterns in the Southern African Development Community (SADC). South African agriculture is currently characterized by a commercial modern sector, an emerging farmer sector and a subsistence sector. The strategic plan for South African agriculture is to unite these sectors into a prosperous agricultural industry. This book suggests policies that will enhance this process and ensure that agriculture continues to produce food at reasonable prices, earning foreign exchange and providing income to the rural poor.
