The emphasis on good character—especially compassion, courage, integrity, and discipline—is nice to see." --Kirkus "Quick and pulsepounding and the stakes are high." --Booklist The Agents of the Glass are at the front lines of the fight between good and evil, and they have a new recruit. But is he up to the task? Andover James Llewellyn, aka Andy, did the unthinkable: he turned in a bag of money he found on the street after a bank robbery. His selfless action caught the attention of the Agents of the Glass. Now, as one of the agency’s newest recruits, Andy is tasked with following the actions of a dangerous student at this new school, only he doesn’t know which student. Is it Winter Neale, model student with countless extracurricular activities? Or could it be Jensen Huntley, an antagonistic, angry kid whose blog has angered the wrong people? Andy must determine his target quick, before the evil organization known at NTRP catches on to him. Will Andy succeed in his mission or will the Agents of the Glass have to find another recruit?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicole Longet never knew her father. She was born in Paris, France, living with her mother and grandmother until she received a scholarship to study in the United States. After graduation, she returns to France and meets and marries Rene Laurent, the owner of a jewelry store who designs and makes his own creations. Nicole, besides working in the store, also delivers the jewelry to customers in many countries. She comes to the attention of a US government agency that is always searching for investigators and agents. Nicole is followed, tested several times, and accepted into the world of spies and secret agents. After a year or two of training and aiding other agents, she was assigned the job of capturing or eliminating a rogue agent in St. Augustine, Florida, who had killed one agent and was trying to kill Emmalou Shallotte, a smitten teenager, because he believed she deceived him. Her next job was to rescue a small six-year-old boy held in an embassy in Washington that she knew from one of her deliveries. Other assignments included the protection of a gypsy woman, Tanya, from her children on a trip from Washington to South Carolina by way of Pennsylvania. Throughout these stories and others are the recurring themes of her work for Rene Laurent, the death of her grandmother, the bequeathing of the brass-bound trunk, the divorcing from Rene, and the romantic start of a new love. The search for her father enters a new stage with the opening of the Grandmothers trunk containing information about a circus performer who might be a thief on the side and who just might be her father. The search continues through the mystery at the Hemphill plantation and the stalking of Jean Ducharme at Randolph College in Virginia. Her trials and tribulations with Carlo, another agent, and finally her trip with Derek the dwarf to Florida to find her father complete this interesting and compelling tale.

Book Spying Through a Glass Darkly

Download or read book Spying Through a Glass Darkly written by David Alvarez and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2016-01-31 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the period between World War II and the full onset of the Cold War, histories of American intelligence seem to go dark. Yet in those years a little known clandestine organization, the Strategic Services Unit (SSU), emerged from the remnants of wartime American intelligence to lay the groundwork for what would become the CIA and, in ways revealed here for the first time, conduct its own secret war of espionage and political intrigue in postwar Europe. Telling the full story of this early and surprisingly effective espionage arm of the United States, Spying through a Glass Darkly brings a critical chapter in the history of Cold War intelligence out of the shadows. Constrained by inadequate staff and limited resources, distracted by the conflicting demands of agencies of the U.S. government, and victimized by disinformation and double agents, the Strategic Services Unit struggled to maintain an effective American clandestine capability after the defeat of the Axis Powers. Never viscerally anti-communist, the Strategic Services Unit was slow to recognize the Soviet Union as a potential threat, but gradually it began to mount operations, often in collaboration with the intelligence services of Britain, France, Italy, Denmark, and Sweden, to throw light into the darker corners of the Soviet regime. Bringing to bear a wealth of archival documents, operational records, interviews, and correspondence, David Alvarez and Eduard Mark chronicle SSU’s successes and failures in procuring intelligence on the capabilities and intentions of the Soviet Union, a chronicle that delves deeply into the details of secret operations against Soviet targets throughout Europe: not only in the backstreets of the divided cities of Berlin and Vienna, but also the cafes, hotels, offices, and salons of such cosmopolitan capitals as Paris, Rome, Budapest, Prague, and Warsaw. A remarkable account of a clandestine war of espionage, kidnappings, blackmail, disinformation, and political subversion, Spying through a Glass Darkly also describes the quantity and quality of intelligence collected by SSU and disseminated to its “customers” in the U.S. government—information that would influence the attitudes and actions of decision makers and, as the Cold War evolved, the course of the nation in a new and dangerous world.

Book Star Trek Mirror Universe Glass Empires

Download or read book Star Trek Mirror Universe Glass Empires written by David Mack and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-02-20 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are moments glimpsed only in shadow, where darkness rules and evil incarnate thrives. You hope against hope that in your lifetime, evil is relegated to the shadows. But what if it wasn't? What if you lived in a universe where your life was measured only by what you could do for the Empire? What would you do to survive? Would you sell your soul to free yourself? If you were offered the chance to rule, would you seize it? If you could free your universe from the darkness but only at the cost of your life, would you pay that price? Star Trek: Enterprise®—she seized power in a heartbeat, daring to place herself against all the overlords of the Empire. Empress Hoshi Sato knows the future that could be; now all she has to do is make sure it never happens. For her to rule, she must hold sway not only over the starship from the future but also over her warlords, the resistance, and her Andorian husband. As quickly and brutally as Hoshi seized power, imperial rule is taken from her. Her only chance to rule again is to ally herself with a lifelong foe, and an alien. Star Trek® One man can change the future, but does he dare? Spock, intrigued by the vision of another universe's Federation, does what no Vulcan, no emperor, has ever done: seize power in one blinding stroke of mass murder. And at the same instant he gains imperial power, Spock sows the seeds for the Empire's downfall. Is this a form of Vulcan madness, or is it the coolly logical plan of a man who knows the price his universe must pay for its freedom? Star Trek: The Next Generation®—Humanity is a pitiful collection of enslaved, indentured, and abused peoples. No one dares to question the order, except at peril of their lives. One man survives by blinding himself to the misery around him. However, Jean-Luc Picard resists, just once. And in that one instant he unlocks a horror beyond the tyranny of the Alliance. Can a man so beaten down by a lifetime of oppression stop the destruction?

Book Spying Through a Glass Darkly

Download or read book Spying Through a Glass Darkly written by Cécile Fabre and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-25 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cécile Fabre draws back the curtain on the ethics of espionage and counterintelligence. Espionage and counter-intelligence activities, both real and imagined, weave a complex and alluring story. Yet there is hardly any serious philosophical work on the subject. Cécile Fabre presents a systematic account of the ethics of espionage and counterintelligence. She argues that such operations, in the context of war and foreign policy, are morally justified as a means, but only as a means, to protect oneself and third parties from ongoing violations of fundamental rights. In doing so, she addresses a range of ethical questions: are intelligence officers morally permitted to bribe, deceive, blackmail, and manipulate as a way to uncover state secrets? Is cyberespionage morally permissible? Are governments morally permitted to resort to the mass surveillance of their and foreign populations as a means to unearth possible threats against national security? Can treason ever be morally permissible? Can it ever be legitimate to resort to economic espionage in the name of national security? The book offers answers to those questions through a blend of philosophical arguments and historical examples.

Book excerpt: A writer’s conference brings twelve-year-old Lark’s favorite writer—and a suspicious death—to Swallowtail Island, in the second book in this middle grade mystery series by an Edgar Award-nominated author. Swallowtail Island is hosting the Swallowtales Writer’s Conference. Lark's ecstatic to be chosen as a “page” for her favorite author, Ann E. Keyhart. But they say you should never meet your idols. When Keyhart arrives with her personal assistant in tow, she is nothing but a terror. And within a few hours, the assistant is dead! But the explanation isn't sitting well. Not when lots of people had reasons to want to be rid of Keyhart, and especially not after it’s revealed the assistant recently completed a hot new novel and the file's vanished from her computer. Then Lark finds out the assistant had a bird—the match to the one she found hidden in her mom’s book—and she needs answers. It looks like Swallowtail Island still has secrets to reveal, and Lark’s going to uncover them. A gripping new chapter in the Swallowtail Legacy series, Mike D. Beil spins another clever clue hunt that seamlessly slips in alongside the best classics of middle grade mystery.
