Diese Arbeit analysiert die Nachrichten über Lateinamerika in der britischen Presse und richtet dabei besondere Aufmerksamkeit auf die Autoren der Artikel und darauf, wer über Lateinamerika zu Worte kommt. In welchem Maße sich Einheimische in den britischen Zeitungen Gehör verschaffen können wird dabei ebenso behandelt wie die Bedeutung von alternativen Quellen (z.B. andere Nachrichtenagenturen als die Großen Drei ). Die Gründe für redaktionelle Entscheidungen (wie z.B. der Einsatz von festen Korrespondenten anstelle von eingeflogenen Reportern, oder die Wahl der Nachrichtenagenturen) und journalistische Praktiken werden außerdem untersucht. Die folgenden Fragen sollen beantwortet werden: - Welches Bild vermittelt die britische Presse von Lateinamerika? - Auf welchem Wege fließen die Nachrichten von Lateinamerika zur britischen Presse? Wer schreibt sie? - Welche Informationsquellen werden genutzt, welche vernachlässigt? Wird Einheimischen und alternativen Quellen Gehör verschafft? Auf der Grundlage einer Inhaltsanalyse von fünf britischen broadsheet Zeitungen und Interviews mit britischen Korrespondenten in Lateinamerika sowie Lateinamerikanern, die in Großbritannien leben, weist diese Arbeit nach, dass viele der Bedenken, die vor 25 Jahren in den Debatten über globale Nachrichtenflüsse zum Ausdruck gebracht wurden, noch immer Relevanz haben. During this period the exponential growth of media influence was an immensely potent weapon of psychological warfare. Throughout the 1940s the press maintained its position as the most powerful medium and its influence remained unchallenged. The documentary record shows that a British media consensus was more fabricated than spontaneous, and the tools of media persuasion and manipulation were extremely important in building acceptance for British foreign policy. Gioula Koutsopanagou examines how this media consensus was influenced and molded by the British government and how Foreign Office channels were key to molding public attitudes to British foreign policy. These channels included system of briefings given by the News Department to the diplomatic correspondents, and the contacts between embassies and the British foreign correspondents.

The first of two volumes, the book predominantly pulls together a rich reservoir of previously published articles from Critical Arts: South-North Cultural and Media Studies, mapping a long history of the field that draws from a diverse range of origins and locations, especially from within Africa itself. The first section of the book addresses how African cultural studies has been called for and explained, both as a comprehensive continental (and sometimes national) discourse and as being in conversation with established global cultural studies. The second section addresses the African diaspora and what might be termed diasporic African cultural studies. A third principal theme explored is how African identities and identifications are articulated in African cultural studies.
