Book excerpt: Canary rockfish (Sebastes pinniger) have long been an important part of recreational and commercial rockfish fishing from southeast Alaska to southern California, but localized stock abundances have declined considerably. Based on age estimates from otoliths and other structures, lifespan estimates vary from about 20 years to over 80 years. For the purpose of monitoring stocks, age composition is routinely estimated by counting growth zones in otoliths; however, age estimation procedures and lifespan estimates remain largely unvalidated. Typical age validation techniques have limited application for canary rockfish because they are deep dwelling and may be long lived. In this study, the unaged otolith of the pair from fish aged at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada was used in one of two age validation techniques: (1) lead-radium dating and (2) bomb radiocarbon (14C) dating. Age estimate accuracy and the validity of age estimation procedures were validated based on the results from each technique. Lead-radium dating proved successful in determining a minimum estimate of lifespan was 53 years and provided support for age estimation procedures up to about 50-60 years. These findings were further supported by?14C data, which indicated a minimum estimate of lifespan was 44 ± 3 years. Both techniques validate, to differing degrees, age estimation procedures and provide support for inferring that canary rockfish can live more than 80 years.

Book excerpt: Methods and utility of age determination of yellowtail rockfish (Sebastes flavidus), canary rockfish (Sebastes pinniger), and black rockfish (Sebastes melanops) collected off Oregon during 1972 to 1975 are discussed. Structures compared on the basis of the reproducibility of counts of annuli (consistency of readings) were the anal fin pterygiophore, opercle, otolith, scale, and vertebra. The effect of deviations between otolith readings on survival estimates and agelength relationships is presented. Consistency of otolith readings is generally superior to other structures for these three species. For yellowtail, canary, and black rockfish, respectively, 71, 76, and 77% of two independent otolith readings deviated by no more than ±1 assumed annulus. Consistency of otolith readings of all three species decreases with age. Chapman-Robson and catch curve estimates of survival and age-length relationships, derived from two readings of the same otolith, are not significantly different at the 95% level for any of the species.

Book excerpt: The use of some age determination methods may result in the incorrect age structure of fish populations. This in turn may lead to incorporation of inappropriate data into models used for stock management. Otoliths are commonly used for determining the age of fishes, and ages based on the whole otoliths (surface ages) are often lower than those based on otolith sections of long-lived, slow-growing fishes such as rockfishes (Sebastes spp.). Therefore, significant overestimates in growth and mortality may occur when surface ages are used for these species. This study provides estimates of growth and total instantaneous mortality for Sebastes diploproa and S. pinniger based on ages determined from the otolith surface versus those determined from otolith sections. For both species, estimates of mortality were reduced by more than half when section rather than surface ages were used. Estimates of growth based on surface rather than section ages were nearly identical for S. diploproa but appeared higher for S. pinniger. The inclusion of posterior otolith projections in the surface counts of S. diploproa and not S. pinniger are suspected of producing these differences. Because of these revised estimates of mortality and growth the life history features and response to exploitation of these species must be re-evaluated. Maximum sustainable yields of S. ninniger and S. diploproa based on surface ages are 2 to 5 times greater for either species than yields based on section ages. Mistaken estimates such as these can lead to management errors resulting in overexploitation and may thus explain the depletion of some stocks of Sebastes spp.

Book excerpt: Rockfishes (Sebastes spp.) support one of the most economically important fisheries of the Pacific Northwest and it is essential for sustainable management that age estimation procedures be validated for these species. Atmospheric testing of thermonuclear devices during the 1950s and 1960s created a global radiocarbon (14C) signal in the ocean environment that scientists have identified as a useful tracer and chronological marker in natural systems. In this study, we first demonstrated that fewer samples are necessary for age validation using the bomb-generated 14C signal by emphasizing the utility of the time-specific marker created by the initial rise of bomb-14C. Second, the bomb-generated 14C signal retained in fish otoliths was used to validate the age and age estimation methodology of the quillback rockfish (Sebastes maliger) in the waters of southeast Alaska. Radiocarbon values from the first year's growth of quillback rockfish otoliths were plotted against estimated birth year producing a 14C time series spanning 1950 to 1985. The initial rise of bomb-14C from pre-bomb levels (≈ -90 {per_thousand}) occurred in 1959 ± 1 year and 14C levels rose relatively rapidly to peak [Delta]14C values in 1967 (+105.4 {per_thousand}), with a subsequent declining trend through the end of the record in 1985 (+15.4 {per_thousand}). The agreement between the year of initial rise of 14C levels from the quillback rockfish record and the chronometer determined for the waters of southeast Alaska from yelloweye rockfish (S. ruberrimus) otoliths validated the ageing methodology for the quillback rockfish. The concordance of the entire quillback rockfish 14C record with the yelloweye rockfish time series demonstrated the effectiveness of this age validation technique, confirmed the longevity of the quillback rockfish up to a minimum of 43 years, and strongly supports higher age estimates of up to 90 years.
