Download or read book Age Composition of Sockeye Salmon Sampled as Part of the Western Alaska Salmon Stock Identification Program Within Westward Region Commercial Fisheries 2006 2008 written by M. Birch Foster and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Western Alaska Salmon Stock Identification Program (WASSIP) was conducted to determine stock origin of chum salmon and sockeye salmon in commercial fisheries of western Alaska. Concurrent sampling of sockeye salmon scales was conducted in a limited portion of areas from Chignik Area (Area L) fishery and North Alaska Peninsula (Area M) fishery. These sampled areas lie on the north and south sides of the Alaska Peninsula in the Port Moller, Chignik and Port Heiden areas.

Book Genetic Stock Composition of the Commercial Harvest of Sockeye Salmon in Bristol Bay Alaska 2009

Download or read book Genetic Stock Composition of the Commercial Harvest of Sockeye Salmon in Bristol Bay Alaska 2009 written by Tyler H. Dann and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bristol Bay Management Area supports the largest sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka fishery in the world. Alaska Department of Fish and Game is responsible for managing fisheries under the sustained-yield principle. Sockeye salmon stocks in Bristol Bay can be exploited at rates up to 80%, so accurately estimating the stock composition of catch is critical to determining the total run (catch and escapement) of each stock. Accurate estimates of total runs are vital for managing under the sustained-yield principle because they provide the basis for establishing and meeting escapement goals. In recent years, the department has developed a genetics program for sockeye salmon in Bristol Bay to develop and apply genetics methods to identify the stock composition of commercial catch in the five commercial fishing districts. Here we present genetic results from 2009, compare them to results from 2006 through 2008, and to those based on traditional age-based methods"--P. 1.

Book Sockeye Salmon Baseline for the Western Alaska Salmon Stock Identification Project

Download or read book Sockeye Salmon Baseline for the Western Alaska Salmon Stock Identification Project written by Tyler H. Dann and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncertainty about the magnitude, frequency, location, and timing of the nonlocal harvest of sockeye and chum salmon in Western Alaska fisheries was the impetus for the Western Alaska Salmon Stock Identification Project (WASSIP). The project was designed to use genetic data in mixed stock analysis (MSA) to reduce this uncertainty. A baseline of allele frequencies is required for use in mixed stock analysis to estimate the stock of origin of harvested fish. This report describes the methodology we used to understand the population genetic structure and build a baseline for use in MSA, describes the performance of the baseline for MSA, and provides guidance on how to interpret biases documented in the MSA tests when evaluating future stock composition estimates of WASSIP mixtures.

Book Salmon Age Sex and Length Catalog for the Kuskokwim Area 2018

Download or read book Salmon Age Sex and Length Catalog for the Kuskokwim Area 2018 written by Kathryn E. Froning and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. age, sex, and length (ASL) data have been collected from Kuskokwim Area harvests and escapements since 1961. Since 1995, the salmon age, sex, and length catalog for the Kuskokwim Area has been produced to compile ASL data into historical summaries useful to Kuskokwim Area fishery managers, contributing project leaders, and other interested parties. This report provides (1) an overview of projects that collected ASL information in 2018, and highlights new data added to the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim Database Management System or AYKDBMS, (2) a single source document for project specific data summaries produced in 2018, (3) a historical summary of ASL data for select long-term monitoring projects, and (4) a quick reference guide to the available historical ASL data archived in the AYKDBMS. This report presents details of ASL sampling efforts which occurred during the 2018 season at 10 project locations including subsistence harvest, test fishery harvest, and escapement. Sampling during the 2018 season resulted in 4,871 salmon sampled for age, sex, or length. Chinook O. tshawytscha salmon made up 42% of the samples collected, followed by Chum O. keta salmon at 29%, sockeye O. nerka at 14%, and coho O. kisutch at 15%.
