  • Author : Dr. Stephen D. Unwin
  • Publisher : Forum Books
  • Release : 2004-10-26
  • ISBN : 1400054788
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book The Probability of God written by Dr. Stephen D. Unwin and published by Forum Books. This book was released on 2004-10-26 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God exist? This is probably the most debated question in the history of mankind. Scholars, scientists, and philosophers have spent their lifetimes trying to prove or disprove the existence of God, only to have their theories crucified by other scholars, scientists, and philosophers. Where the debate breaks down is in the ambiguities and colloquialisms of language. But, by using a universal, unambiguous language—namely, mathematics—can this question finally be answered definitively? That’s what Dr. Stephen Unwin attempts to do in this riveting, accessible, and witty book, The Probability of God. At its core, this groundbreaking book reveals how a math equation developed more than 200 years ago by noted European philosopher Thomas Bayes can be used to calculate the probability that God exists. The equation itself is much more complicated than a simple coin toss (heads, He’s up there running the show; tails, He’s not). Yet Dr. Unwin writes with a clarity that makes his mathematical proof easy for even the nonmathematician to understand and a verve that makes his book a delight to read. Leading you carefully through each step in his argument, he demonstrates in the end that God does indeed exist. Whether you’re a devout believer and agree with Dr. Unwin’s proof or are unsure about all things divine, you will find this provocative book enlightening and engaging. “One of the most innovative works [in the science and religion movement] is The Probability of God...An entertaining exercise in thinking.”—Michael Shermer, Scientific American “Unwin’s book [is] peppered with wry, self-deprecating humor that makes the scientific discussions more accessible...Spiritually inspiring.”--Chicago Sun Times “A pleasantly breezy account of some complicated matters well worth learning about.”--Philadelphia Inquirer “One of the best things about the book is its humor.”--Cleveland Plain Dealer “In a book that is surprisingly lighthearted and funny, Unwin manages to pack in a lot of facts about science and philosophy.”--Salt Lake Tribune

  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2020-02-03
  • ISBN : 153813442X
  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book Fear Is Fuel written by Patrick Sweeney and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fear, the most powerful force in our life, is the least understood. Every one of us experiences it. Many arrange their lives to avoid it. Yet nearly every one of us needs to find more fear. Most of us know fear as the unwanted force that drives phobias, anxieties, unhappiness, and inhibits self-actualization. Ironically, fear is the underlying phenomenon that heightens awareness and optimizes physical performance, and can drive ambition, courage, and success. Harnessing fear can heighten emotional intelligence and bring success to every aspect of your life. Neuroscience and current research on how the brain processes and uses fear have torn the lid off the possibilities of human performance; yet most people are not reaching their complete potential because of a psychological roadblock Sweeney calls the Fear Frontier. Identifying your Fear Frontier and addressing it, Sweeney illustrates in these pages, is the path to success, happiness and fulfillment in almost all aspects of your life. He also provides the most effective steps toward rewiring your mind for a healthier longer life based on courage. Fear is Fuel is a practical guide that instructs readers on a unique path toward translating fear into optimal living. By facing fears, and challenging new ones, readers can harness the power of unique motivations to achieve more, experience more, and enjoy more. The path to a fulfilling life is not to avoid fear but to recognize it, understand it, harness it, and unleash its power.

Book Against All Odds

Download or read book Against All Odds written by ,Carlota and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-12-23 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the first seventeen years of my life. I am seventy-two now but remember everything as though it happened yesterday. I want to thank Fulton Books for their support of me and the opportunity to write all this down. Now I can start to forget, at least partially. I will remember my love of flowers and birds and God, who made all things. We had moved to Francis, a small town close to Palatka, Florida. By this time, there were three children in our family. Our parents had not told us they were going anywhere. One day, they just left us with the two aunts and uncles in Ocala. I am not sure if they even told them where they were going except that they would be back in a couple of days. They were actually gone and missing for almost a month. By that time, my aunts were getting worried and were ready to send the police to round them up. I stayed with Myrtle. Frank and Beth, my sister, stayed with Aunt Margerite. Some of my cousins may know, but otherwise, it is a mystery to both of us where they went. They left no food or money. Anyway, Paul and Vivian were gone for a long time, and it is still, to this day, a mystery. I got to know Aunt Myrtle and her son, Roger, a little better. Myrtle appeared to be a godly woman. She went to church and took Roger to church anytime the doors were open. Myrtle was adamant that Roger go to church and learn how to play the piano. She had someone come to give him lessons every week. She made Roger go to church and practice the piano for an hour every day. Roger learned to play beautifully but hated the piano and church, but he had no choice in the matter. On the other hand, I loved the piano and desperately wanted to learn how to play. This piano was an old-timey piano that had belonged to my grandmother, who had given it to my mother. My mother moved around a lot, so she had given it to Myrtle. Also, once she married, she lost interest in it. My aunts both said my mother could play beautifully. They told me that she had played for church, but when she refused to join the church, they would not let her play anymore. One day, Roger had finished his lesson. I was trying to play a song I had heard when Myrtle came in and, without warning, slammed the handle that closed ten piano down on my hands. It really hurt. From that day forward, I realized how jealous she was of me, and I avoided her. We never had any kind of relationship after that. Finally, my parents returned with no explanation of why they had left or where they had gone. It was always my feeling that they wanted a "vacation" from kids. They felt that raising kids was like a jail sentence.
